I may as well kick off this blog with this summer ’ s most shamefully hyped blockbuster, the adaptation of H.G. Wells ’ 1898 novel, War of the Worlds. Many think Tom Cruise has fallen off the deep end, considering his eerie devotion to new love Katie Holmes and his hypnotic-like transformation into the poster child for Scientology. Cruise seems more like a cross between Pepe Le Pew and a Jehovah ’ s Witness than a movie star nowadays. But that being said, he still manages to put forth entertaining products, and War of the Worlds is no different, mostly because he need only play the vehicle through which we see the brilliance of director Steven Spielberg.

Also, in another folder of pictures, I found a picture of us re-creating that picture on Blowout senior year. I'm going to make a composite which I find a minute of spare time and send it to y'alls. Another bogus subplot, long popular on the left, has it that Patrick Fitzgerald, the special prosecutor, gave Mr. Novak a free pass out of ideological comradeship. But Mr. Fitzgerald, both young (44) and ambitious, has no record of Starr - or Ashcroft-style partisanship (his contempt for the press notwithstanding) or known proclivity for committing career suicide. What's most likely is that Mr. Novak, more of a common coward than the prince of darkness he fashions himself to be, found a way to spill some beans and avoid Judy Miller's fate. That the investigation has dragged on so long anyway is another indication of the expanded reach of the prosecutorial web.

First read it over on Fred Hembeck's site, now it's been confirmed all over, Jim Aparo passed away last night at age 72. I'm of an age where Jim Aparo was pretty much the Batman artist I grew up with, especially with his work on THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD. I especially liked his take on many of the classic Batman villains. I continued to enjoy the new stuff as well as various older works like Spectre, Aquaman and Phantom Stranger as I discovered them.

Interestingly, the AP report cites Chief Judge Edith "Joy" Clement of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana (in the Fifth Circuit) as the likely nominee. Then, near the end, it lists several other names -- one of which is Harvard Law Professor Mary Ann Glendon. I had not heard Prof. Glendon's name come up previously, but she is extremely sharp and would make an excellent Supreme Court Justice. She would certainly get my support.

Literally within minutes of the official statement by President Bush, I heard a representative from the National Organization for Women (NOW) say that they oppose the nomination of John Roberts to the Supreme Court because he is someone along the lines of Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas. The bats came through again last night, as the Yankees got to Ricardo Rodriguez early with 6 runs in the 2nd inning. The Yankees hit another three homers (Posada, Sheffield, Matsui), giving them 29 in their last 11 games. They needed all the offense they could get tonight, because the pitching just wasn't there. Kevin Brown didn't look good in his return, although I guess that was to be expected because he wasn't even given a rehab start. Scott Proctor and Wayne Franklin also struggled, and an error by Bernie Williams costed us three runs (none of the three runs given up by Franklin were earned). The bullpen settled down though once Tanyon Sturtze entered the ballgame as he retired all 7 batters he faced and Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect 9th inning for his 24th save of the season.

The acting was top-notch for the most part (other then a few lame one-liners that didn't really fit). Christian Bale was terrific, both as the tortured-by - guilt pre-batman Bruce Wayne and as a re-focused Bruce Wayne fighting crime as Batman. I also really liked the villains, Ra's Al Ghul and Dr. Jonathan Crane. Both were fun to watch, and fit into the story well. Morgan Freeman played the exact same character he plays in every movie, which I happen to like, so I enjoyed him in Batman Begins too.

The bats came through again last night, as the Yankees got to Ricardo Rodriguez early with 6 runs in the 2nd inning. The Yankees hit another three homers (Posada, Sheffield, Matsui), giving them 29 in their last 11 games. They needed all the offense they could get tonight, because the pitching just wasn't there. Kevin Brown didn't look good in his return, although I guess that was to be expected because he wasn't even given a rehab start. Scott Proctor and Wayne Franklin also struggled, and an error by Bernie Williams costed us three runs (none of the three runs given up by Franklin were earned). The bullpen settled down though once Tanyon Sturtze entered the ballgame as he retired all 7 batters he faced and Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect 9th inning for his 24th save of the season.

DEACON adds: As I said the other day, she was confirmed unanimously for appeals court judge in 2001 at a time when all solid conservatives were encountering strong resistance. She had a decade-long record as a district court judge, but Ralph Neas and Nan Aron apparently found nothing to object to. An attorney I know who has appeared before her has nothing positive to say. From a conservative point of view this woud be (is?) a high risk nominee. I hope someone will point me to evidence that I'm wrong. Mark Levin at Bench Memos asked for such evidence and does not appear, as yet, to have received any.

I bring it up because Matt Bai of the New York Times had a very long, but interesting article this past Sunday that looked at the Democrat's strategy of "framing" the issues. The father of the Democrat's strategy is George Lakoff, a linguistics professor at Berkley who has had a spectular rise to prominence since the election. He wrote "Don't Think of an Elephant", which although it had some initial trouble getting published, is now in its fifth printing. Lakoff has set up a consulting company to help Democrats regain political power using his theories.

Forget about Spiderman, Batman, Superman or whatever it is, this is THE most accurate comic adaptation to Hollywood's big screen, ever. It doesn ’ t matter if you have or haven ’ t read the original graphic novels; you are going to enjoy this masterpiece by Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, Spy Kids, From Dusk Till Dawn). The whole movie is based on elements from “ The Babe Whore Red ”, “ The Hard Goodbye ”, and “ That Yellow Bastard ”, three stories from the original graphic novels series, all gripping and intertwined with each other nicely within the plotlines. With all the essences of ultra violence, cannibalism, bondage outfits, and nudity, Sin City is no doubt an artistic, eye-popping adult fantasy movie.

The previews for Million Dollar Baby didn't get me too excited. I love Morgan Freeman, but his part looked small. Hilary Swank is a very talented actress, but there are other actresses that I prefer.
