Walter Maestri, emergency management chief for Jefferson Parish, told the New Orleans Times-picayune (June 8, 2004): "It appears that the money has been moved in the president's budget to handle homeland security and the war in Iraq, and I suppose that's the price we pay. Nobody locally is happy that the levees can't be finished, and we are doing everything we can to make the case that this is a security issue for us."

While our attention must now be on the Gulf Coast's most immediate needs, the nation will soon as why New Orleans's levees remained so inadequate. Publications from the local newspaper to National Geographic have fulminated about the bad state of flood protection in this beloved city, which is below sea level. Why were developers permitted to destroy wetlands and barrier islands that could have held back the hurricane's surge? Why was Congress, before it wandered off to vacation, engaged in slashing the budget for correcting some of the gaping holes in the area's flood protection?

New Orleans had long known it was highly vulnerable to flooding and a direct hit from a hurricane. In fact, the federal government has been working with state and local officials in the region since the late 1960s on major hurricane and flood relief efforts. When flooding from a massive rainstorm in May 1995 killed six people, Congress authorized the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project, or SELA.

If the mayor ’ s death-toll estimate holds true, it would make Katrina the worst natural disaster in the United States since at least the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire, which have blamed for anywhere from about 500 to 6,000 deaths. Katrina would also be the nation ’ s deadliest hurricane since 1900, when a storm in Galveston, Texas, killed between 6,000 and 12,000 people.

On tonight's news, CTV (Canadian TV) said that support was offered from Canada. Planes are ready to load with food and medical supplies and a system called "DART" which can provide fresh water and medical supplies is standing by. Department of Homeland Security as well as other U.S. agencies were contacted by the Canadian government requesting permission to provide help. Despite this contact, Canada has not been allowed to fly supplies and personnel to the areas hit by Katrina. So, everything here is grounded. Prime Minister Paul Martin is reportedly trying to speak to President Bush tonight or tomorrow to ask him why the U.S. federal government will not allow aid from Canada into Louisiana and Mississippi. That said, the Canadian Red Cross is reportedly allowed into the area.

by auditioning contributor Kirrily Britney Spears has revealed the names that she likes for the baby she is expecting with her husband Kevin Federline. Britney, who is due in October, has told Elle Magazine that she likes the name London for a boy. "Ever since I was a little girl, I thought for a boy I love Sean Preston, or London Preston. Isn't London pretty?" And just in case the baby happens to be a girl, though rumors insist it isn't, Britney adds: "And for a girl I love Addison Shye. I think that's pretty." Britney's favouring of the name London could have something to do with the fact that she started her relationship with Kevin while they were in London. From the devastation may a city full of righteousness emerge," he continued.

The President has a lot to coordinate at the moment. Navy warships are being dispatched to the region, oil and gas prices are spiking because of refinery damages, and typical relief operations are being stymied due to the extraordinary flooding in New Orleans. Bush has assigned these and other coordination duties to Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff.

I've signed up my little soapbox to participate in this exercise (you can see a list of who's participating here), and will be supporting the American Red Cross (the Canadian Red Cross isn't an option, but you could donate to them as well).

August 2005: While New Orleans is undergoing a slow motion catastrophe, Bush mugs for the cameras, cuts a cake for John Mccain, plays the guitar for Mark Wills, delivers an address about V-J day, and continues with his vacation. When he finally gets around to acknowledging the scope of the unfolding disaster, he delivers only a photo op on Air Force One and a flat, defensive, laundry list speech in the Rose Garden.

Variety reports that Jessica Alba and Hayden Christensen have been signed up by The Weinstein Co. and Greene Street Films to star in the thriller Awake. Both companies will provide financing and Joby Harold will be making his directorial debut (he also penned the screenplay). The film centers on a man (Christensen) who suffers “ anesthetic awareness ” and finds himself awake and aware, but paralyzed and mute, during surgery. Alba will play his wife. Filming is slated to start in October. Jared Leto had been attached to star in the role that Christensen now has but it appears that he is no longer attached.

And where is the "President's" leadership? Just as in 9/11, he has no plan, has no clue, has no concept. Just as with Rudy Guiliani in New York, this time Mayor Nagin, Senator Landrieu and Governor Blanco are the only people with power and influence that have an actual grasp on the ground situation in New Orleans. B*sh and the Federal government have again failed.

A bunch of bloggers have written asking about coordinating the donation of ads for Katrina relief. While an individual blogger can always give an ad with his/her own "offer code," some bloggers are trying to coordinate a larger effort. For example, last night the liberal blogger network donated a bunch of ad space for money that will go to the Red Cross, thanks to the efforts of Kari Chisholm and Chris Bowers.

Tired of hearing the ongoing blame game, spouted by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and many others, that Bush caused Hurricane Katrina? Aaron at Blue State Conservatives has a nice slap-down post that summarizes an article at Techcentralstation.com by James Glassman. The article efficiently deconstructs the argument that anthropogenic global warming — if there even is such a thing, really — can have anything to do with hurricane frequency or ferocity.

Now, salary and length of contract were not settled, and, frankly the Spurs had no comment about it whatsoever - but, you know how these signings always get leaked out before anyone is truly'ready'. The trip down I-35 for Finley will put him on a championship caliber team along with his old Mavericks teammate, Nick Van Exel. And there you have it.
