The death of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist leaves Justice John Paul Stevens temporarily in charge. Justice William Rehnquist's body will lie in repose in the Great Hall of the Supreme Court on Tuesday and Wednesday, and

Tonight i saw the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Johnny Depp in it - it was great and very different to the original movie (more like the book) Johnny Depp did a great job as Willy Wonka and also Charlie was a great little actor (i think his name is Freddie Highmore or something like that) I went with Leanne, Terese and Prue .... surrounded by a cinema full of kids because it was a special fundrasier thing for a club Leanne is in... something to do with Starstruck much to my surprise the kids were actually really well behaved during the movie and they all clapped and cheered at the end - it was so cute :)

Last night me and Jess went to a Green Day concert at Gilette Stadium. We got to see Against Me, Jimmy Eat World, and of course Green Day. Wewere so close, maybe 8-10 feet from Billie Joe. It was major kickass. Awesome last thing at home before back at school for good.

In what may be the most glaring sign of incompetence and poor communication in the local and state levels of New Orleans and Louisiana, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said the federal government did not know refugees at the New Orleans Civic Center and the Superdome did not have food and water early on in the hurricane relief effort.

Last night: Red Eye, with Cillian Murphy and Rachel Mcadams. Definitely an'average'rating at best. Plenty of plot holes, places that diffused the tension instead of building it up effectively. Cillian Murphy is preeeetty. Ooh my. Those lips.. those eyes.. okay, so this was an eye candy movie! We had White Castle before the movie - we had all of ten minutes to grab dinner and eat before the show started. I always forget that White Castle burgers are good for about two bites, and not very filling. So we stopped at White Castle again on the way - out - of the movie. Bad, bad us. Today: pick up poster from Kinko's for tomorrow's symposium. Get more groceries since the fridge is still very barren. Relax!

In case we find ourselves starting to believe all the anti-american sentiment and negativity about our government and its policies, we should remember British Prime Minister Tony Blair's words to his own people. During a recent interview, Prime Minister Blair was asked by one of his Parliament members as to why he believes so much in America, and does he think America is on the right track? Blair's reply: "A simple way to take measure of a country is to look at how many want in... and how many want out."

And I agree with the author. Governor Blanco should be impeached on grounds of incompetence. As for Mayor Nagin, I can't understand why an arrest warrant for manslaughter (multiple counts) and criminal negligence hasn't already been served. The man should be behind bars, without bail, awaiting trial.

her reading. Similarly, Jaybeas Corpus, a 2L at Washington College of Law at American University in D.C., worried about his family ahead of the storm, then learned they'd made it through ok. Jay also links to this terrific video of Anderson Cooper giving Senator Mary Landrieu (D, LA) hell for mouthing platitudes in the face of catastrophe.

Underscoring the strain of the disaster, Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-la., lashed out at federal officials who she said have denigrated local efforts to deal with the catastrophe. "If one person criticizes them or says one more thing, including the president of the United States, he will hear from me," she said on the ABC's "This Week." "One more word about it after this show airs and I might likely have to punch him. Literally." 9.4.05

I keep having dreams about the same person. hm. I saw Beaula, my dearest, today! We had a picnic in her back yard with kool-aid and off-brand cheese-its. Then we took down her precious collage wall. I felt honored to be a part of the experience. I have to go back tomorrow. I wan na see Corpse Bride so bad. Heartheartheart Johnny Depp... and Danny Elfman... and Tim Burton. The power trio. I need to make and maintain a budget until I get settled in enough to get a job.

I decided to take a break from all of the storm-related blogging I'd been doing this weekend, as well as the NARN shows that occupied all of the last two weekends, and take the First Mate out to dinner and a movie this evening. We don't see too many first-run movies; the excellent The Great Raid was the last we saw before tonight. I hoped for an extension of the winning streak with The Constant Gardener, about which I had read nothing. However, with Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz in the leads and a solid supporting cast, and a story by John Le Carré, the prospects looked good for another good film.

http: // news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk _ news/scotland/4213014. stmhundreds of fans are making a pilgrimage to the Scottish castle which was used in the filming of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. This year's sell-out event has been restricted to 500 people, who will each receive their own shrubbery in memory of one of the film's running gags. There will also be sketch recreations and about 1,200 coconut shells have been flown in from Florida so fans can clip-clop along during a screening of the film.

2. With ten thousand or more possibly dead, millions of people displaced in the Gulf Coast, gas and electricity unavailable, roads flooded or not navigable, wouldn ’ t one think that the ability of even the richest nation on earth would be limited in its ability to immediately rescue every person? I am leery of anyone whose opinion or criticism of the U.S. government is aligned with those of Fidel Castro or Hugo Chavez.

Watching this segment from CNN's Larry King special "How You Can Help", where Celine Dion makes an empassioned plea to viewers, all I can think to myself is what an asshole I am for ever talking smack about this woman ever in my life. No, I'm not a fan of her music. But people do like her, they are fans of her music, and hearing her talk with so much passion about her pledge of $1M to the rescue efforts and her compassion for the impoverished thousands left in the hurricane's wake erases anything else. I don't have to like her music, but she has earned the deepest of my respect. (With Thanks to Crooks And Liars For The Piece)

THE PRESIDENT: Morning. This summer I announced the nomination of Judge John Roberts to be associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. I choose Judge Roberts from among the most distinguished jurists and attorneys in the country because he possesses the intellect, experience and temperament to be an outstanding member of our nation's Highest Court.

Bryan Preston of Junkyard Blog is going to be guest blogging at Michelle Malkin ’ s until his site is back up and running. He is doing an excellent job covering the response (or more accurately, non-response) of the local government to the flooding in New Orleans. His latest contribution is this transcript of the briefing of the Dod on the National Guard response to Hurricane Katrina. It is an interesting read.

What does all this mean though? The Hokies manage to get a tough win on the road, and there are a lot of ways to say this was a great game for Tech. Marcus Vick had a solid game, he didn ’ t make too many big plays, the biggest thing he did was not blow it. He didn ’ t run or pass for a lot of yards, but he didn ’ t give any to NC State either. He didn ’ t throw a pick and only got sacked three times (a testament to the offensive line).

“ New Orleans now is abortion free. New Orleans now is Mardi Gras free. New Orleans now is free of Southern Decadence and the sodomites, the witchcraft workers, false religion -- it's free of all of those things now, "Shanks says." God simply, I believe, in His mercy purged all of that stuff out of there -- and now we 're going to start over again. "The New Orleans pastor is adamant. Christians, he says, need to confront sin." It's time for us to stand up against wickedness so that God won't have to deal with that wickedness, "he says.

Those memoes, on the other hand, have encouraged conservative organizations to believe that Roberts, on the Court, will be a solid member of the most conservative bloc, perhaps voting regularly with Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas. These groups lost no time on Monday morning congratulating Bush on deciding to nominate Roberts as the Chief.

The Sunday Times of South Africa reported in August that the release of HBP shattered all previous records there, selling 40,000 copies in its first day. As of August 21 it had sold 65,000 copies, knocking Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code from its position as number one best seller.

Hurricane Katrina has become a major disaster because of the failure of government at every level. That disaster has been made worse largely by the totally inept response by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) which is headed by Michael D. Brown, who was appointed by Bush.

the wake of the government ’ s failure in the Katrina disaster, there are calls for Bush to fire Michael Brown, head of FEMA, and, perhaps, Michael Chertoff, head of DHS (see Andrew Sullivan for links).

The swift move would promote to the Supreme Court ’ s top job a newcomer who currently is being considered as one of eight associate justices. It would also ensure a full 9-member court, because retiring Justice Sandra Day O ’ Connor has said she will remain on the job until her replacement is confirmed. (more …)

Kanye West isn't coal on snow stylistically in the hip-hop field. He doesn't stand out. Collaborative songs, in the hip-hop world especially, often mask a lesser efforts that rely on star power. "Gold Digger" is like that. It features Jamie Foxx and the name-drop of three or four other big names in rap.

lied about her name all the way through. Not to mention I just can't see anyone acting like they do, particularly the behavior exhibited by Clive Owen and Julia Roberts'characters. Jude Law seems to be making a career of playing cads though.

? The formerly solid wall of “ Bush can do no wrong ” is crumbling lately. Not only has Bill Frist gone against the White House by following his medical experience instead of faith-based science and supporting stem cell research, now he ’ s calling for hearings on the federal reaction to Hurricane Katrina. Damn. They haven ’ t even counted the dead yet, there are hundreds still to rescue from rooftops around New Orleans, and Frist is hacking at the Prez? Where was your spine when you could have prevented something, Mr. Majority Leader? Did you have to wait for Maxine Waters to pull her Jesse Jackson-assisted publicity stunt at England

The passing of Chief Justice William Rehnquist leaves the center chair empty just four weeks left before the Supreme Court reconvenes. It is in the interest of the Court and the country to have a chief justice on the bench on the first full day of the fall term. The Senate is well along in the process of considering Judge Roberts'qualifications. They know his record and his fidelity to the law. I'm confident that the Senate can complete hearings and confirm him as chief justice within a month. As a result of my decision to nominate Judge Roberts to be chief justice, I also have the responsibility to submit a new nominee to follow Justice Sandra Day O'connor. I will do so in a timely manner.

"The mainstream media's handling of Hurricane Katrina and the disasters in New Orleans is a disgrace, possibly the worst instance yet of media bias. Insane claims by left-wing nuts that President Bush botched the recovery effort on purpose so as to kill black people are repeated by the MSM in a chin-stroking mode, as if to say," It's an interesting question -- they might be on to something. "Meanwhile, no one points out that it was President Bush who implored Governor Blanco to issue a first-ever mandatory evacuation order for the city, an action by the President that probably saved tens of thousands of lives."

The President's nomination of John Roberts to be Chief Justice of the United States simplifies, but in other ways complicates, the effort to give the Supreme Court a full complement of nine Justices. It is certain now, just as it was when news of William Rehnquist's death was released Saturday night, that there is no practical way to confirm two nominees by the Term's effective start in late September or its formal start on October 3. The looming questions now involve the timing of the Roberts confirmation hearings, whether Justice O'connor will take her seat at that time, and how long it will take to confirm her successor.
