In their zeal to protect the United States from another terrorist attack, federal officials downgraded and kicked aside the lead agency charged with overseeing rescue and relief efforts in major disasters. Further, the top post at the Federal Emergency Management Agency was awarded as patronage to a lawyer with no prior experience in disaster management.

On the way home, we heard this segment on the radio where this DJ argued with a black lady about the Katrina recovery effort. Kanye West is a douche. I like his music and all, and I think his image is damn-near-perfect, but he really did not have to pull out the "race card" with this situation (see: "George Bush does not like black people.").... Don't even want to rant. It's not a race issue, it's a person issue. It's becoming some dirty liberal scandalous thing. Ugh. I'm just pretty irked at the moment, sorry.

As Congress returns for its fall session, Mr. Bush has reason to feel burdened but still optimistic. He ’ s been politically bruised by his administration ’ s response to Katrina but hardly crippled. He promptly named the conservative he ’ d already nominated for the Supreme Court, John Roberts, to replace Chief Justice William Rehnquist, who died Saturday. Judge Roberts is likely to be confirmed in time for the court ’ s opening day in October. That leaves the seat of Justice Sandra Day O ’ Connor, who resigned in June, still vacant. If the president follows his instincts, picks another conservative, and gains confirmation, he will have succeeded in tilting the ideological balance of the court to the right.

American Red Cross volunteers have been deployed to the hardest hit areas of Katrina ’ s destruction, supplying hundreds of thousands victims left homeless with critical necessities. By making a financial gift to support Hurricane Katrina Relief efforts, the Red Cross can provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to those affected by Hurricane Katrina.

I put $10 on the table that Scott Mcclellan resigns to'spend more time with his family'or blows his own brains out by the end of the year. All of this lying is getting to be too much for poor Puffy Mcmoon-face. Watch Monday's Press Briefing. He's cracking up: White House Press Briefing - Monday September 5, 2005

Update, 16: 20 Chronological points in an AP report today: FEMA chief sent help only after storm hit. Brown ’ s memo to Chertoff described Katrina as “ this near catastrophic event ” but otherwise lacked any urgent language. The memo politely ended, “ Thank you for your consideration in helping us to meet our responsibilities. ”

You damn rock star. You know all the basics, and if you got any wrong, I bet it was that stupid Traveling Wilburys question. Your friends are probably intimidated by your knowledge of classic rockand envy your impressive collection. When a classic rock song comes onthe radio, you can probably identify it before the vocals kick in mostof the time. You probably get good scores on the "maiden name ofclapton's mom" tests, too.

I ’ ve always been a massive fan of everything Tim Burton. Here is a flash animated Ouja board promo for The Corpse Bride, his latest animated creation. Voices from frequent cast Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. There is also a proper trialer for it! Looks very The Nightmare Before Christmas, and that ’ s a very good thing in my book. It should hit a cinema close to all of us sometime in October. Sweet! Via Screenhead

Stolen from MSN: And finally, congratulations go out to Lance Armstrong, 33, and Sheryl Crow, 43, who have announced their intention to make things legal. The seven-time Tour de France champ popped the question to the "All I Wan na Do" singer last Wednesday during a mountain-biking vacation in Sun Valley, Idaho, according to the cyclist's Web site (geez, doesn't that guy ever kick back with a bucket of fried chicken and a DVD?). The couple, who met two years ago, will likely tie the knot in the spring. This will be the first trip to the altar for Crow and the second for Armstrong, who has three children with his ex-wife, Kristen. Lance Armstrong kicks ass. I wan na marry him too. That is all.

In short, some of the left's complaints have some validity here. But guess what? Nobody's listening anymore. For four solid years, the blathering idiots of the lunatic left have been blaming Bush for everything from sunspots to the breakup of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. They've predicted looming fascism, complete with concentration camps, imminent theocracy, back-alley abortions and a return to legalized segregation. As with the boy who cried wolf, the country has become accustomed to filtering them out.

It is hard not to comment on the varried response to the Death of Chief Justice Rehnquist. The most shocking was Alan Dershowitz vile description of Rehnquist just hours after the holder of this historic and honorable office ’ s death was announced.

Kim Clijsters just came back from a set and a break down to knock off Venus Williams, in a match that was even sloppier and more inconsistent than the one that preceded it. (Maria Sharapova and Daniela Petrova combined for 98 unforced errors in their three-setter - tossing 48 and 50 respectively - but Venus managed to top Petrova and Clijsters had an unreal amount in the first two sets, as well.) Clijsters blew Williams off the court so badly in the third set (6-1, and Venus was hardly getting any points) that the announcers were speculating about injury.

... the Sharapova AND James Blake vs. Andre Agassi! I'm rooting for Blake (ESPECIALLY since Andy Roddick couldn't be bothered to stick around for a few days!) -- he was my lil'Harvard hottie crush when I saw him play two years ago. Besides, he's the comeback kid in this tournament.

The performance of the night though has to go to Marty Casey. Marty gives a new twist to “ Everlong ” and has a hit with the original song “ Trees. ” Dave Navarro says “ I could hear that song on the radio today. ” Marty will almost certainly be performing an encore of “ Trees ” on the results show. In the early voting results the rock singers are in the following order from first to last: Marty, Suzie, J.D., Mig, and Jordis.

any good ideas for an all-out bachelorette party? My sister's church friends (yes, she has them!) are throwing her a'tame'shower --- it's up to me and the other women whose commitment ceremony she stood up in to get together a slightly more...'scandaliscious'evening for. At work today, i saw two girls i went to high school with. They both had kids in strollers. I was freaked out. Given the highly awesome pending theme provided by Erin, should i incarnate Janis Joplin or Meg White or Devil-hybrid of many rock-stars for halloween? (yes, i know how highly ludicrous and presumptuous it is even to think about imitating those women.) vs. my profile pic.... yeah, i guess you 're right. does anyone else think Emma Thompson would be great in the title role of a Joni Mitchell biopic?
