Judge John Roberts should not be confirmed to be the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Certainly no one would argue that Mr. Roberts'intellect or professional qualifications are lacking. There is no question that he is more than capable in these areas. Nor do we have evidence of a character flaw that would disqualify him. Nor has Roberts said anything during his confirmation hearings that would disqualify him from the position.

September 14th, 2005 - At a happy 25-years-old, I taught four classes: two general course first year English courses on the finer points of eating out in English, a class on Debate, and an advanced first year English course. I tutored a third year student at lunch, and he asked about the proper usage of the word, "Shit." I ate lunch when I got home at 4: 30pm, and I went hunting for the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children DVD, only to find that it had already sold out all over town. Then I retired to my fifth-floor apartment and spent the rest of the evening watching Starship Troopers and putting the finishing touches on my costume for the 2005 Tokyo Video Game Convention (this weekend, mofo).

William Dembski was on the Daily Show tonight for a panel discussion on evolution. He did much better than I expected, although it was obvious that Jon Stewart didn ’ t really understand the differences between old-school creation science and the intelligent design camp (or perhaps he simply didn ’ t care about those differences). In addition, I found it interesting that Dembski and Edward Larson were basically agreeing with one another on most of the points and that Stewart didn ’ t seem to pick up on it.

Mr. Red, the Federal response to Hurricane Katrina is the culmination of President Bush ’ s ineptitude as a leader and it will remain so until the next disaster/incident requiring his leadership. The man certainly can ’ t lead. He can ’ t do not much of anything else in my opinion, but that ’ s for another column.

New song from Tuesday, "Sophomore Stomp" has been posted: http: // www.superpickle.com/goat/50song/At 4am this morning I awoke singing "Way To Go" and recorded a quick demo. I hope to see that completed soon. Neil Innes show last night was a bit odd in that there was a looseness that led to missed notes here and there. Still, good times and great stuffness. I spoke a bit with him afterwards and learned that the score he had written for Monty Python & The Holy Grail that ended up not being used was in fact recorded, and I got a lead on where to find those recordings. Wheeee!

If Jefferson believed that the government should keep its hands out of religion completely, then why, while President of the United States, and the first elected president of the Washington, D.C. public school board, did he place the Bible and the Isaac Watt's hymnal into the public school system as required reading? If they appeared frustrated, at least they avoided -- mostly -- the kind of silly and juvenile antics shown in the first round by Ted Kennedy and Joe Biden. I reviewed the taped testimony again last night and saw a marked difference in the tone from the Leahy side of the table. The questions remained tough, as did the nominee in insisting that he hew to the code of ethics regarding jurists making prejudicial statements about issues that they may see in cases brought before them in the future. However, the tone settled back into a more professional and restrained level than the day before.

I ’ m officially refusing to rent any movie with ANY of those scum-sucking bottom feeders, refusing to pay money to see ANYTHING with them in it. John Travolta and Kelly Preston? Go to hell. Tom Cruise can go stick that corn cob up his little 5 ′ 7 ″ ass (yes, you little prick, YOU ARE SHORT!) and take his Dawson ’ s Creek playtoy with him. There are many others, and I ’ m only one single person, but I intend on ensuring these jackasses don ’ t get one dime of my money … now, do I want to see War of the Worlds? Of course. Wanda Sykes on Jay Leno was very funny about Katrina. Jay: "But President Bush took responsibility." Wanda: "I don't think the President should have taken responsibility .... I don't blame the President. I blame the American people. Y'all knew the man was slow when you voted him in. You can't blame the blind man for wrecking your car when you 're the one who gave him the keys." We know which half of the country she was talking about. Yep.

The press needs to understand this, when considering the question of a “ religious test ” being used on nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court. The question is not whether nominee John Roberts is a Catholic. What the senators want to know is whether he is an Anthony Kennedy Catholic or an Antonin Scalia Catholic. Is he a John F. Kennedy Catholic or a Rick Santorum Catholic? In my opinion, they need to just come out and state this question openly and live with the consequences. Journalists like candid sources. Say what you mean and get quoted.

That approaching vacancy has gone almost completely unmentioned during the Roberts hearings over the past four days, but it seems sure to become a central consideration as Democrats ponder how they will vote on Roberts. The judge, by who he is and especially by how he has performed in the witness chair, has made it more difficult for Democrats to vote against him to replace Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist. That has been most evident, this week, in the anguished musings of Sen. Dianne Feinstein, California Democrat, who openly confesses to facing "a dilemma." Sharing that dilemma, to some extent, seem to be such hardy Democratic liberals on the Committee as Sens. Joseph Biden of Delaware and -- more surprisingly -- Charles Schumer of New York.

You are the fabulously quirky and independent woman of character. You go your own way, follow your own drummer, take your own lead. You stand head and shoulders next to your partner, but you are perfectly willing and able to stand alone. Others might be more classically beautiful or conventionally woman-like, but you possess a more fundamental common sense and off-kilter charm, making interesting men fall at your feet. You can pick them up or leave them there as you see fit. You share the screen with the likes of Spencer Tracy and Cary Grant, thinking men who like strong women.

Anthony Weiner's concession of the Democratic mayoral primary to Fernando Ferrer isn't as smooth sailing as thought: The city will still have to hold a runoff if Ferrer's votes are still under 40%. Gothamist bets his campaign workers are wishing they made it out to a couple more neighborhoods to rouse voters! Showing its true colors, the Post sharpens its knives and says Weiner's decision "could cost the city $12 million" - the amount a runoff would cost. The NY Times says that Weiner decided to concede on his own, with no promises from the Ferrer campaign; the Times notes that Ferrer is currently "cautious" about this apparent turn of fortune.

A deal has been signed between Telltale games (made up of most of the staff that worked on the old Lucasarts adventure games, IIRC) and Steve Purcell to produce more Sam and Max games. This unfortunately will not include Freelance Police, as that's still locked away with Lucasarts. They will also work on adaption of the comic Bone by Jeff Smith as well. Yes, more senseless and random violence!
