President Bush has nominated Ben Bernanke to replace the venerable Alan Greenspan as Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board. According to Bernanke, his main priority will be to “ maintain continuity with the policies and policy strategies established during the Greenspan years. ” That being said, Bernanke favors adopting formal inflation goals to help guide interest-rate policies, whereas Greenspan is opposed the setting of such targets, as they tend to restrict the Fed ’ s ability...

At various times over the course of the Valerie Plame investigation, it has been reported that Karl Rove and Scooter Libby told prosecutors that they learned of Plame's identity from journalists. In July, a source told Bloomberg News that Libby had told Patrick Fitzgerald that he first learned about Plame from Tim Russert. At about the same time, a source told the Washington Post that Rove had told investigators that he thought he first learned about Plame from a reporter whose identity he couldn't recall. And just last week, sources told the Post and the AP that Libby and Rove discussed Plame's identity among themselves before Bob Novak revealed it in his column -- but that the two men discussed only information reporters had given them.

Well, the highlights include conferences by Bruce Sterling, Studio Grangel (responsible for animating Tim Burton ’ s “ The Corpse Bride ”), ILM and several Japanese game designers like Fumito Ueda (responsible for “ Ico ” and “ Shadow of the Colossus ”), Tetsuya Mizuguchi (creator of “ Lumines ” and “ Rez ”) and Toshio Iwai (of “ Electroplankton ” fame).

Those close to the investigation say that Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald has been told that David Wurmser, then a Middle East adviser to Vice President Dick Cheney on loan from the office of then-under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs John Bolton, met with Cheney and his chief of staff I. Lewis “ Scooter ” Libby in June 2003 and told Libby that Plame set up the Wilson trip. He asserted that it was a boondoggle, the sources said... Libby then shared the information with Karl Rove, President Bush's deputy chief of staff, the sources said. Wurmser also passed on the same information about Wilson to then-deputy National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley and then-national Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice, they added.

This part of Inflation Targeting merits careful reading, for much of the story in detail is interesting and competently told. But what is striking is that even the authors admit that inflation targeting in practice has actually done little to fight inflation. In the case of New Zealand, they write, "the decision to announce inflation targets occurred after most of the disinflation... had already taken place." The same is true for Canada, and Britain also embraced inflation targets when "it was most likely to meet them." Sweden "was in deep recession" with inflation "down to a historically low rate of three percent per year" when its central bank adopted inflation targets.

Rosa Parks, the black woman whose 1955 protest action in Alabama marked the start of the modern US civil rights movement, has died at the age of 92. Mrs Parks ’ refusal to give up her seat to a white man on a bus led to a mass boycott of buses by black people. The protest led to the desegregation of the transport system and culminated in the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which outlawed race discrimination in the US.

‘ … The specter of losing Rove, his only truly irreplaceable assistant, lies at the heart of Bush ’ s distress. But a string of political reversals, including growing opposition to the Iraq war, Hurricane Katrina ’ s aftermath and Harriet Miers ’ bungled Supreme Court nomination, have also exacted a personal toll … Bush is so dismayed that “ the only person escaping blame is the President himself, ” said a sympathetic official, who delicately termed such self-exoneration “ illogical. ”

No, they didn't get a new stadium deal. No, they didn't win. But... next week, the Jets don't have a game. That means they won't have a chance to lose a game or have a chance to get injured. With their luck though, Brooks Bollinger will drop a can of Chunky Soup on his foot. Last night's ugly 27-14 loss to the Falcons, dropping the Jets to 2-6, featured four (!!) turnovers by Vinny Testaverde before he was knocked out of the game by the Falcons defense. With all of Testaverde's turnovers, the Jets were unable to capitalize on Michael Vick's three interceptions.

But my list did contain Hamid Karzai (I see the list is notably lacking any Middle Eastern voices - strange since we Consevatives have been so keen on bringing moderate and capable ME leadership into the mainstream), writer Victor Davis Hanson (we need a historian) architecht I.M. Pei and cellist Yo-yo Ma (Music and beautiful buildings are essential in my well-led world, and both men would bring the rigors of their disciplines with them - both are excellent communicators) and my list also included Joe Torre, who - after managing the Yankees for 10 years and dealing with George Steinbrenner, has displayed unflappable leadership. Now, the fact that none of you chumps TOLD ME about this would normally be cause for a tangle, but fortunately I caught 1981 episode where they had a segment on (duh duh duuuuuuuuh): You Can't Do That On Television. Alas, they didn't have Christine Mcglade on there -- which would have been awesome -- but they gave the show its props. The show has a nice mix of new faces: the likes of Wil Wheaton and Alysson Hannnigan supporting the Michael Ian Black/Hal Sparks dynamo. And of course, they did the "I don't know bit." Alysson Hannigan getting slimed. You know that was being bittorrented seconds after it happened.

An anonymous reader writes "A new study shows that companies hire foreign workers for cheap labor, not skill." From the article: "When you look at computer job titles by state, California has one of the biggest differentials between OES salaries and H-1B salaries. The average salary for a programmer in California is $73,960, according to the OES. The average salary paid to an H-1B visa worker for the same job is $53,387; a difference of $20,573... H-1B visa workers were also concentrated at the bottom end of the wage scale, with the majority of H-1B visa workers in the 10-24 percentile range.'That means the largest concentration of H-1B workers make less than [the] highest 75 percent of the U.S. wage earners,'the report notes."

It was made up of a very small group of people led by Vice President Dick Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
