The indictment of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby in the CIA leak investigation was major news. Libby -- who promptly resigned from his position as Dick Cheney's chief of staff -- is portrayed in the indictment as repeatedly, and deceptively, claiming he learned about Valerie Plame Wilson's classified status at the CIA from reporters. This explains why special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald was so adamant about getting reporters to testify.

After fretting about how a “ minus ” of the Alito pick “ is that the nomination lessens the court's diversity, ” the editorial writers argued: “ In losing a woman, the court with Alito would feature seven white men, one white woman and a black man, who deserves an asterisk because he arguably does not represent the views of mainstream black America. ”

In 1991, he [Alito] wrote a dissent in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, saying a Pennsylvania law requiring women to notify their husbands before they had abortions was constitutional. The Supreme Court heard an appeal of the case the next year, rejecting Judge Alito's position... he wrote that "a husband has a legitimate interest in the welfare of a fetus he has conceived with his wife" and argued that spousal notification did not place an undue burden on women.

i went to the black eyed peas & gwen stefani concert with monika. it was so much fun. im so glad she took me with her. ah the concert was awesome. but yeah it was good sister bonding time =) shes awesome i love her so much. before the concert we walked around boston and got dinner and all that fun stuff. we took the train into boston, it was nt as bad as i thought it was going to be. no weird-os lol. umm but yeah we got home around midnight. and i had a blast with her. so im happy =) this year halloween was fucking awesome =)

Prime, written and directed by Ben Younger (who is one to watch) is about a divorcée (Uma Thurman) falling in love with a much younger man (Bryan Greenberg) while her relationship with her therapist (Meryl Streep) gets more and more complex. Though the movie is charming it flounders around a lot, never quite sure how to resolve its central romantic dramedy. It also defies narrative movie expectations in a way that doesn't entirely serve it by letting the climactic reveals arrive with no fuss whatsoever. They play more like filler scenes than big moments. Yet Prime's strange quirks don't feel like those annoying script note driven "make-the-characters-memorable" screenplay ticks that so many comedies are burdened with. They feel more like genuine reaches for full characterizations.

Yesterday, the President nominated Judge Samuel Alito for the Supreme Court after the abortive Harriet Miers nomination. Alito is a graduate of Princeton and Yale Law. He is currently serving on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Good choice, Mr. President. It took long enough.

Unfortunately, it was a bit disappointing to me while in Oaxaca to see the influence of the Halloween holiday — and not in a positive way. According to some reports this holiday was first celebrated in the late 1960s but became even more of a presence in the 1980s and particularly in the 1990s, after Mexico joined the United States and Canada in NAFTA.
