The blogosphere is buzzing with reactions to the criticisms Rev. Joseph Lowery and ex-president Jimmy Carter launched at President Bush during the Coretta Scott King funeral. My take? First off, it's hardly surprising that the funeral of a political figure turns political. Second, it's hardly surprising that a Republican President is criticized by far-left speakers at the funeral of a figure closely associated with the Democratic Party. Third, Bush should have known it was coming, since avoiding situations like this presumably is why he's ducked appearing at NAACP conventions. Fourth, many of those bloggers criticizing Lowery and Carter for speaking truth to power were the same ones praising Powerline's Paul Mirengoff for posing tough questions to Senators Kennedy and Durbin.

Oscar Nominations: Best Actor, Heath Ledger... Best Supporting Actor, Jake Gyllenhaal. I'm sorry. What? I mean, on the one hand, it's good that they 're not up against each other cause then one would inevitably go home empty handed, but... Why does Jake rank below Heath? They 're pretty even in the movie in my eyes. I never understand shit like this. That aggravates me. Heath is getting all the love, all the "wow, wasn't he wonderful?!" and Jake is getting "oh yeah, he was in that too." Which is bullshit. Heath was wonderful, yes, but so was Jake. Damnit.

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY and SCARLETT JOHANSSON grace the cover of the Hollywood issue of Vanity Fair, with guest artistic director Tom Ford sitting in for Rachel Mcadams, who backed out at the last minute, as noted here in December. Angelina Jolie will be similarly unclothed inside the mag, which comes out today, iirc. I don't know what Jane Austen would say about it, but I'll bet Woody Allen buys a dozen. Knightley and Johansson were said to be a little embarrassed about posing nude; Keira says as much o n the the sadly safe-for-work video, which is also posted o n Youtube. Scarlett was rocking a vintage Police tour jersey after the shoot.

Or, Is Hillary Too Angry? By MAUREEN DOWD The Republicans succeed because they keep it simple, ruthless and mythic. In 2000 and 2004, G.O.P. gunslingers played into the Western myth and mined images of manliness, feminizing Al Gore as a Beta Tree-hugger, John Kerry as a Waffling War Wimp With a Hectoring Wife and John Edwards as his true bride, the Breck Girl. The current protests throughout the world by Muslims who were offended by caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad (here ’ s a story today about riots in Afghanistan) that originally ran in a Danish newspaper, sparked an interesting discussion among some friends of mine, about the nature of offensive imagery and the role of the media and even of cartoonists. The most inflammatory cartoon was one of Muhammad with a bomb as part of his turban, suggesting that all Muslims are terrorists.

TLC is very happy to report to you that Warner Brothers has put an end to the speculation from earlier today, and confirmed to us that in fact, Gary Oldman will return in the role of Sirius Black for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. There is further good news today, for WB also confirmed that actor David Thewlis will be reprising his role as Remus Lupin for Phoenix as well. They will be filming their parts later this summer. I am always much saddened when I ask people if they've ever seen any Monty Python, and they remark that they did or didn't like Holy Grail, as if it were the only thing Python has done. Holy Grail is a great and classic movie, but it's hardly all they've done. How can a person go through life and not know what the phrase, "and now for something completely different," means? It's a travesty I tell you! If nothing else, everyone should see the Life of Brian. That people don't know what a successful encyclopedia salesman looks like is simply inexcusable! I think a lot of people would find me much less weird if they could see where I got some of my humor from...

Joe Theismann, Mike Tirico, and Tony Kornheiser will be the Monday Night Football announcers when it moves to ESPN next season. Tirico will be fine. He's been doing a solid job as the straight man covering a number of sports. Theismann is too much like the Bill Walton of football in that he tries to dominate the talk with his football knowledge. When he's wrong it's incredibly irritating. But on Sunday Night Football there was Paul Maguire to put him in his place. Next season, Kornheiser steps in. He looks to be the Dennis Miller of the group. He'll make quips but without viewers having to search through encyclopedias or Google to figure out what he meant. I could do without him.

and to complete this same Quiz, Its HERE. In other news, we went to see Mrs. Henderson Presents tonight and really enjoyed it. Judi Dench is marvelous, of course, and it was cool to see Natalia Tena (who will be playing Tonks - I think she'll be very good). I also want to point out that today is the 66th anniversary of Pinocchio, which is (as you may guess) in my Top Ten Movies of All Time. If you haven't seen it lately, I highly recommend giving it another try. Watch it for the beautiful animation, the clever dialogue, the wonderful soundtrack and the little details that make it distinctly Disney. You'll see a real work of art that is just unmatched in most of today's animated movies. I just can't WAIT until they release the Special Edition of this on DVD!
