Huffington Post - NPR's Nina Totenberg aired an amazing story this morning about a talk that just-resigned Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'connor gave at Georgetown University. The first woman to serve on the High Court wouldn't allow her actual words to be broadcast, and that's a shame, because -- based on Totenberg's report -- every American needs to hear what she said. The Reagan appointee who became a moderate and an American icon -- Bush v. Gore notwithstanding -- all but named names in thinly veiled attacks on former House majority leader Tom Delay and Texas Sen. John Cornyn, and ended with a stunning warning.

This Professionally Remanufactured Hewlett Packard HP 51629A (HP 29) black inkjet cartridge is an original manufacturer's brand inkjet cartridge which has been through one cycle of service and has been recharged. Each one of our remanufactured inkjet cartridges has been thoroughly cleaned along with the printhead nozzles. Then the inkjet cartridge is filled with the same ink formulation, checked if it has the correct internal atmospheric pressure, inspected the shell for any possible leakage, tested the operation of all electrical circuitry and finally ran through an actual print test. If the cartridge passes our rigid standards, it has been remanufactured! Works with the Hewlett Packard HP Deskjet 600/660/670/680/690 Inkjet Printers.

Nearly 80% of all Americans, including 70% of Republicans, believe civil war will break out in Iraq - the bloody hot spot upon which Bush has staked his presidency. Nearly 70% of people say the U.S. is on the wrong track, a 6-point jump since February. "Obviously, it's the winter of our discontent," said Rep. Tom Cole, R-okla. Republican Party leaders said the survey explains why GOP lawmakers are rushing to distance themselves from Bush on a range of issues - port security, immigration, spending, warrantless eavesdropping and trade, for example.

The drum beat from the left over torture claims has reached a new low in my opinion. Per the BBC: More than 250 medical experts have signed a letter condemning the US for force-feeding prisoners on hunger strike at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The experts, from seven nations, said physicians at the prison had to respect inmates'right to refuse treatment … ….. But Dr Nicholl said that "horrible as it may sound" the doctor had to conform to the wishes of hunger strikers, even if it led to their deaths … … … … … … …. So add to the list of atrocities and torture at GITMO, force feeding people who are trying to kill themselves via hunger strikes … … … … … … … … … … … How insane has this debate become … … … … … … … … … … … … …..

Incidentally I realised too when I got home that there is a ST article by Andy Ho today that touches on exactly the same issues. He raised the case of the lawsuit that 2 writers are bringing against Random House for Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code, and how it has become an issue of engaging literary analysts to influence judges'prevailing practice in assessing these things. But going by the notion that ideas are not original .... and therefore can not be copyrighted, they probably have no case. Yes that book may be a conspiracy theory but it's one of those reads that qualifies as''better''pulp fiction by virtue of its entertainment factor... not so much its''literari-ness''.

News today may shed light on the mystery of Allen's resignation. According to the Montgomery County Police Department, Allen was arrested yesterday and charged in a felony theft and a felony theft scheme. According to a department press release, Allen conducted approximately 25 fraudulent "refunds" in Target and Hecht's stores in Maryland. On Jan. 2, a Target employee apprehended Allen after observing him receive a refund for merchandise he had not purchased. Target then contacted the Montgomery County Police. According to a source familiar with the case, Target and the police had been observing Allen since October 2005.

Perhpas lung cancer will finally receive more attention and money for research. Perhaps more people will pick up the causes she and her husband worked for: recovery from spinal cord trauma, rehabilitation for the disabled, work opportunities for the disabled.

Credit counseling agencies can provide filers with a counseling certificate after one or two sessions, or they can develop a debt management plan (DMP) based on consolidating credit card balances into a negotiated agreement with creditors. In turn, creditors may lower interest rates and forgive fees.

Who knows if this is even in the works? Like I said at the beginning, it is a totally unsubstantiated rumor at this point. Obviously, there is little to no risk for XM and O&A.

We just stumbled upon "one of the most famous photographs of a chair ever taken." The Arne Jacobsen ANT chair was photographed by Lewis Morley in 1963 (actually, it's a fake ANT, but meant to look like the ANT anyway). The woman at the center of our attention is a high class call girl named Christine Keeler. Her affair at that time with John Profumo became the stuff of legend. The story is in the Nytimes today as Mr. Profumo died yesterday. It is as good now as it was then. So is the chair.

. Delany's writing is more "experimental" and literary than my own, his concerns less about plot and story than language, technique, and aesthetic. But he has written some amazing books. And far from being the kind of "literary snob" that many of us working in genre fiction expect when someone writes that sort of thing and can throw around the sorts of literary heavyweight names and concepts that he does, Delany is proud that most of his fiction has been in what he calls the "paraliterary" genres of science fiction, sword & sorcery, and pornography. In his book, along with Eco and Rimbaud and Auden, he discusses Robert E. Howard and Conan, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore and the Beatles.
