John Mccain's gambit at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference to call for supporters to write in George Bush's name in the straw poll is getting decidedly mixed reviews. The press has always been Mccain's most loyal constituency, and they were the ones who were building a cult of inevitability around his nomination. This lurch towards the President, who is at his lowest ebb nationally AND in the eyes of the media, simply does not compute with their beloved notions of a "maverick."

The CPT opposes the Iraq war and has criticized treatment of detainees in U.S. and Iraqi jails. Fox and three other CPT members were kidnapped in Iraq in November. An incredible read (albeit 10 pages on the internet) positioning Mark Warner as the alternative D candidate for the 2008 presidential nomination - noting both his strengths and weaknesses as a candidate. Matt Bai did a great job on the article - I think we are going to hear a lot of the same ideas reiterated for the next two years. He points out that she demonstrated unprincipled behavior in a situation where the facts were against her position and she and many others may have significantly damaged relationships with an Arab ally. so i realized there's a story behind everything. the summary of the explanation i got for fred phelps'hatred of gay people is this: he and a male family member were walking through gage park (where i lived across) which in the 70s was allegedly where people had gay sex all the time. while they were there, they were propositioned by a gay guy and were so appalled that they turned to city council to do smtg about it. but nothing was ever done about it --- or they were told there was nothign that really could be done. so phelps turned his WESTBORO baptist church into a political mouthpiece against homosexuality. most of his children (11/13 it says in the article - i was nt aware before how many there were) are LAWYERS so they can avoid being prosecuted.
