Denzel Washington sometimes seems to alternate between great-actor Denzel (like in previous Spike Lee movies) and dull movie-star Denzel (I saw Virtuosity in a theater. In Syracuse!), but his performance in Inside Man is a great reminder of how he can do both at once when necessary (I think he last did this in the underrated Out of Time; see also Devil in a Blue Dress). Nothing he does here is particularly new or revelatory or incendiary -- this is very seriously around the tenth or eleventh time he's played a cop -- but he makes it sing anyway. The whole cast rocks along with him. Clive Owen, Jodie Foster, Chiwetel Ejiofer, Willem Dafoe, bam bam bam bam, four very fine performances. I don't want to oversell this thing, but it's a damn good movie and a lot of fun, too.

"But behind closed doors, the president was certain that war was inevitable. During a private two-hour meeting in the Oval Office on Jan. 31, 2003, he made clear to Prime Minister Tony Blair of Britain that he was determined to invade Iraq without the second resolution, or even if international arms inspectors failed to find unconventional weapons, said a confidential memo about the meeting written by Mr. Blair's top foreign policy adviser and reviewed by The New York Times."

Bush and Dick Cheney can rest easy, for now: "Al-qaida conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui testified Monday that he and would-be shoe bomber Richard Reid were supposed to hijack a fifth airplane on Sept. 11, 2001, and fly it into the White House. Moussaoui's testimony on his own behalf stunned the courtroom as he disclosed details he had never revealed before. It was in stark contrast to Moussaoui's previous statements in which he said the White House attack was to come later if the United States refused to release a radical Egyptian sheik imprisoned on earlier terrorist convictions.

The real news emerging from the March 15-17 VON show wasn't the blizzard of product and partnership announcements. It was that Voice over IP (Voip) is poised to change the way businesses communicate -- and even the way they operate -- in the same way it changed the long distance calling market.

Vicious and intolerant attacks on the Catholic Church can not be justified by the simple desire of the archdioceses of Boston and San Francisco to be in accord with the universal church and Catholic teaching on marriage and family life. Given the minuscule number of adoptions by same-sex couples that have been arranged by U.S. Catholic agencies, it seems clear that the strident opposition to the Catholic Church's position is driven by something other than concern for children in need of a home.

Honky Tonk has been a genre of country music I've found a considerable amount of joy in listening to. However, it was not Buck Owens who helped me find this genre. It was Dwight Yoakam, who with his Appalachian roots caught my ear with the spunky sound and educated me that Buck Owens was notorious for Honky Tonk music. At the time, I only thought Buck Owens had had only a few country hits and was most famous for his and Roy Clark's hosting of Hee Haw.

Where in the Constitution can one find protections for foreign terrorists? I keep reading through it but I've not found the passage yet. And based on comments from Justice Antonin Scalia, I won't be finding one: No Legal Rights for Enemy Combatants, Scalia Says'War Is War,'Justice Tells Audience Associated Press Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia reportedly told an overseas audience this month that the Constitution does not protect foreigners held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. "War is war, and it has never been the case that when you captured a combatant you have to give them [sic] a jury trial in your civil courts," Newsweek quoted Scalia as saying. "Give me a break." - I ’ m not going to harp on Paul Dana ’ s untimely death in this entry, because we all know the inherent dangers of racing, and the bad things that can happen. But I will say this, and this is not meant to sound mean or disrespectful: Dana most likely died because of a rookie mistake on his part. Ed Carpenter wrecked at least 6 or 7 seconds before Dana got to him, giving him plenty of time to slow down. He never did, and there was no sign of a communication breakdown. So unless the brakes or something else had failed, which I doubt, Dana made a simple rookie mistake that had grave consequences. RIP Paul.

, here, in "Respect the respectable" about the trouble with "moderate Islam" (HT: Kathy Shaidle). For Fleming, the trouble with "moderate Islam" is that it isn't any such thing. He drives home his central point by contrasting the militant reaction of Islam to cartoons published in a "provincial" newspaper in a language spoken by fewer people than live in Cairo, with the global reach of the "Davinci Code" and the ensuing non-reaction from global Christianity. This, even though "the Code" suggests that Jesus "got it on with Mary Magdalene." Fleming very helpfully points us to a recent book,

Josh Hartnett ("Sin City") indulges in a snappy tongue-in-cheek puzzle of a thriller that ’ s akin to eating ten flavors of ice cream. A fast twitch opening sequence torn from the pages of Tarantino ’ s playbook introduces Bruce Willis as a cunning and calm assassin with the gift of gab. Before you can say, "Kansas City shuffle" Mr. Goodkat (Willis) has laid out a flashback murder-filled tale of familial tragedy brought on by a father ’ s misguided attempt to bet on a mob-fixed horse race. The fact that Mr. Goodkat tells the story to his next victim before dispatching him in public hints at the misdirection that 28-year-old screenwriter Jason Smilovic uses to lure the audience deeper into the folds of his angular story.

When I first started watching Dr Who at age seven, it had already been around for fourteen years. My first reaction to David Tennant was "Wow, he looks even younger than Peter Davison did!" Watching "The Christmas Invasion" last night, it occurred to me that he might be the first Doctor to be younger than the series. That's not the case -- checked Imdb, and Christopher Eccleston was born in 2/64, so he makes that title by three months. Tennant, however, is the first Doctor to be younger than I am. * blink *
