April 11, 2006 - Key figures in a phone-jamming scheme designed to keep New Hampshire Democrats from voting in 2002 had regular contact with the White House and Republican Party as the plan was unfolding, phone records introduced in criminal court show. The records show that Bush campaign operative James Tobin, who recently was convicted in the case, made two dozen calls to the White House within a three-day period around Election Day 2002 as the phone jamming operation was finalized, carried out and then abruptly shut down. The national Republican Party, which paid millions in legal bills to defend Tobin, says the contacts involved routine election business and that it was "preposterous" to suggest the calls involved phone jamming.

When you invest so much effort into tangling the web — in this case, corrupting intelligence analysis in the 2002 National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq — it becomes hard to know when to stop. Vice President Dick Cheney went to inordinate lengths to ensure that that crucial NIE on weapons of mass destruction was alarmist enough to scare Congress into authorizing war. And when the evidence turned out to be flimsy, Cheney had a back-up plan: The CIA made me do it.

In the past few years, the popularity of online poker has exploded, with millions of players around the world playing daily. Many attribute the enormous surge in popularity of online poker to the huge amount of media attention given to annual tournaments such as the World Series of Poker (WSP) and the Online Casino World Poker Tournament (WPT). In recent years, poker, particularly Texas Hold ’ em, has become a favorite recreational activity of people of all ages.

As Dennis said, we shouldn ’ t go about this with another war, at least not if we can avoid it. However, I think we as a nation are justified in worrying. We should treat this problem as peacefully and diplomatically as possible. WASHINGTON, April 10 — From the early days of the C.I.A. leak investigation in 2003, the Bush White House has insisted there was no effort to discredit Joseph C. Fools Die reminds me of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. I remember being warned by my mentor to be sure that my faith is strong and has solid foundation. He was worried I might lose faith. But it didn't happen. I would even say that after I read DV Code I've loved God more. Brown's book had no bad effect on me. But Mario Puzo's Fools Die was shocking.

The cynics will say that with their new miniseries, The Ten Commandments, ABC is trying to cash in on the right-wing political environment and spending frenzy started by The Passion of the Christ. Or maybe they will say ABC is trying to cash in on the popularity of Naveen Andrews from their hit series LOST. Both may be right.

I have no strong opinion on the suddenly hot-button issue of illegal immigration. I see both sides of the argument equally well, and assume there must be a good compromise available if people are willing to work for one. However, I do find the strident anti-immigrant people creepy as hell. I saw a clip on the news of two guys burning a Mexican flag. Hmm, where have I seen something like that before? Postscript: While Gising the above image, I meant to type "Burning American Flag," but omitted the L, and, well, you can probably imagine how that turned out.

* In the Scooter Libby indictment, Fitzgerald notes that Cheney informed Libby on June 12, 2003, that Valerie Wilson worked at the CIA's Counter-proliferation Division. The CPD is part of the operations directorate, the CIA's clandestine services. Many, if not most, of its employees are undercover. Certainly, their employment status at the CIA is classified information. The indictment does not note exactly what Cheney told Libby about Valerie Wilson -- whether he said she was an undercover operative or not. But he was passing on classified information to Libby.

Kellie Pickler, my all-time favorite train wreck. i can not wait for 8: 00. "Bohemian Rhapsody". God loves me. she says it's hard to memorize since she only has a minute and thirty seconds of it. that'll be so great, her forgetting the lyrics while hitting a bad note. "Mama, just la-la-la" out of tune will be fabulous! the best, though, will be if she sings this part: "I see a little silhouetta of a man..." - I would die from my sides splitting open. Galileo!

Mr. Fitzgerald said he was preparing to turn over to Mr. Libby 1,400 pages of handwritten notes — some presumably in Mr. Libby ’ s own hand — that could shed light on two very different efforts at getting out the White House story. One effort — the July 18 declassification of the major conclusions of the intelligence estimate — was taking place in public, while another, Mr. Fitzgerald argues, was happening in secret, with only Mr. Bush, Mr. Cheney and Mr. Libby involved … ’

There was an interesting moment during yesterday's 500 mile Nextel Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway yesterday. Greg Biffle got dumped by Kurt Busch (who appeared to be a little less patient than he could have been and has not been playing well with others recently) and shortly thereafter Biffle's fiance'approached Busch's fiance'in Busch's pit box, and for a moment there it looked like we might have our first NASCAR chick fight. Given the $10,000 fine that was given to Jeff Gordon following a single shove a couple of weeks ago, I'm not sure how NASCAR would have handled an incident which did not involve drivers or official crew members.

Over at Espn.com's page 2, Chuck Klosterman's article The Breaking Point is a very interesting read on Barry Bonds and his approach to breaking Babe Ruth's home run total and how people approach this happening. Yeah, no one is really excited, and frankly it is Bond's own fault, but people should be excited, I know if Arod stays healthy and is able to approach the record and break the totals I will be more interested than I am with Barry Bonds. :-)

No word on the actual circumstances for the visit to the Spears household by DCFS, but we'll speculate on the reason. We think that Kevin Federline was performing "rapping" in front of little Sean Preston Federline, and if that's not considered child abuse, I don't know what is?

Washington manager Frank Robinson served his game ’ s suspension during Monday ’ s loss to the Houston Astros, and relief pitcher Felix Rodriguez appealing his three-day siddown-and-shaddap, all springing from last Thursday ’ s whoopee in New York, when Rodriguez drilled Paul Lo Duca after warnings went forth at last, following a few plunks from Pedro Martinez refusing to abandon the inside corner merely on the impetus of a few Nat plate-crowders, Jose Guillen in particular. And with those suspensions plus MLB top cop Bob Watson ’ s warning to just play ball, Bannister and Nats starter Ramon Ortiz (who ’ d been strafed in New York Thursday) pretty much behaved themselves.

In an appreciation of his mentor, Jack Anderson, who died in December, Waas told us something about his own approach. "The public has pushed back against insider, access journalism -- whether practiced by Bob Woodward, Judith Miller, or Robert Novak," he wrote. "Anderson always understood it was his role to be an outsider, not just in regard to the politicians he covered, but also vis-a-vis the established order of journalism." And Waas is that outsider, as Woodward was 34 years ago when he began investigating a burglary at the Watergate.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the European Commission has sent a letter to Microsoft warning the software giant that it will not be allowed to sell its new Windows Vista operating system in Europe if it comes pre-packaged with certain security features. “ We expect that Microsoft will design Vista in a way which is in line with the European competition laws, ” EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes told the Wall Street Journal. “ It would be rather stupid to design something that is not. ” The report also said EU officials were particularly concerned that Microsoft could use its Internet Explorer 7 browser to direct users to the company ’ s own search service.

I was just watching "Today," with Matt Lauer interviewing James Carville and Michael Berconish (sp?). I think I had a fugue moment, though, since Berconish was expaining the Bush declassification effort in relation to Joe Wilson's campaign of misinformation. As if Ambassador Wilson, in 2003, was some sort of demagogue comparable in power and influence to the President himself. Berconish also suggested that Bush wasn't to blame... for anything. He believed blah did the right thing blah he's the man blah blah. It was a nauseating, but no doubt effective, exercise in holding all the wrong people responsible for the things done by President Bush, Vice President Cheney, Secretary Rumsfeld, and Mr. Wolfowitz (not to mention Scooter, who will certainly get off scot-free).

To say that last weeks episode was hectic would be an understatement: CTU has been taken over by homeland security. Audrey Rianes has signed a statement blaming Bill Buchannon for the missteps that CTU made. Evelyn, Jack and Wayne Palmer rescued Evelyns daughter and in the ensuing action, Evelyn takes a round to the leg. Wayne Palmer comes into his own as a cold hearted anti-tango killing machine. And the coup de grace from last week? President Logan is apparently the one who masterminded all the events thus far. After this weeks quick recap, you just know that Jack and Wayne and Evelyn know too much... hell even I FEEL like know too much.

If you think Mayor Michael Bloomberg is an enigma wrapped in a riddle cloaked in a mystery that happens to have a billion or so dollars, here's another thing to keep you guessing. Our mayor donated $44,600, the maximum allowed, to California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's re-election bid. And Bloomberg explained it by saying, "I think that Schwarzenegger - while I probably don't agree with him on a lot of things - he's trying new things. He's got a pizazz about him and I think that's something different." Arnold certainly has pizazz (or is that huge, huge chompers), which the mayor often aspires to. The AP reports that Bloomberg

I'm sure by now you've seen or heard about all the immigration rallies kicking off all around the country. People holding signs that say things like, "USA: Built by Immigrants" is true but doesn't acurately address the issue; "USA: Built by Legal Immigrants" does address the issue. Senator Ted Kennedy using a translator to address an immigrant rally is also amusing to a degree. Trust me, it wasn't nearly as moving as John F. Kennedy's Berlin speech. JFK was a democrat that I could admire; today's democrat's would have let Khrushchev put missiles in Cuba with little to no resistance.

Big Story in college basketball right now is the possibility of John Calipari taking the job at North Carolina State. There is no more sleazy basketball coach in America than Calipari (well at least until Huggins coaches his first game at Kansas St). His hair exudes grease and those who have followed his recruiting tactics over the years have consistently claimed that he walks the line of the rules in every situation ….. unless of course he is crossing them. However one can not argue with his results, as he has won big at two schools (UMASS and Memphis) that have not had the benefit of “ major conference ” status and has shown an ability to develop players for all levels.
