Lacking biolabs, trailers carried case for warwhite House pushed Iraq bioweapons claim despite evidence to contraryby Joby Warrickupdated: 1: 28 a.m. ET April 12, 2006on May 29, 2003, 50 days after the fall of Baghdad, President Bush proclaimed a fresh victory for his administration in Iraq: Two small trailers captured by U.S. troops had turned out to be long-sought mobile "biological laboratories." He declared, "We have found the weapons of mass destruction." The claim, repeated by top administration officials for months afterward, was hailed at the time as a vindication of the decision to go to war. But even as Bush spoke, U.S. intelligence officials possessed powerful evidence that it was not truehttp: // www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12275328/

How can I tell? Because White House press secretary Scott Mcclellan apparently went ballistic at today's press briefing over the subject of whether, in 2003, Dubya said that Saddam Hussein had biological weapons when he knew that wasn't true.

I've just been to a screening of An Inconvenient Truth, the new film about climate change featuring Al Gore. Gore, it turns out, has spent the past few years perfecting a new stump speech, this one solely dedicated to the issue that he still calls "global warming". This movie is essentially the film of the speech. It's a powerful speech, so it makes a powerful movie.

There have been repeated claims that this past year's hurricane activity was another sign of human-induced climate change. Everything from the heat wave in Paris to heavy snows in Buffalo has been blamed on people burning gasoline to fuel their cars, and coal and natural gas to heat, cool and electrify their homes. Yet how can a barely discernible, one-degree increase in the recorded global mean temperature since the late 19th century possibly gain public acceptance as the source of recent weather catastrophes? And how can it translate into unlikely claims about future catastrophes?

Awesome — Vice President Cheney threw out the first pitch at the Washington Nationals home opener yesterday, and was resoundingly booed from the moment he stepped foot on the field through the moment he disappeared back into the dugout. (You can listen yourself here, although it ’ s Fox News, and the producers unsurprisingly muted the crowd for a few seconds in the middle before giving in and letting us hear the disapproval.)

Ethics got cancelled for today, so I have a little break between Music Theory Lab (where we had an exam... eish) and Music Theory Class (which is always like pulling teeth). Also after that, I have a practice with Mr. Kregler at 11: 30, except I think I forgot to tell him what piece I was playing, so I may be back in time for lunch! So lalalalala! This Date in Civil War History, 1861 At 4: 30 AM, Confederates under General Pierre Beauregard opened fire with fifty cannons upon Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. The Civil War begins... Go figure that the Civil War nearly lasted 4 years to the day. The rest of my day: 10: 30 Music Theory, 11: 30 Practice with Mr. Kregler, 2: 30 Concert Band. I can't say I care too much, but if I were gon na have Jamies baby and he told me I had to be silent through the birth and have little contact with my child during the first 24hours so as not to stress it out I would tell him in no uncertain terms - "darling, Fuck off!" However, the statement did not offer an alternative, CNN said.

I've always wanted to be like Maggie Gyllenhaal. She's pretty. She's quirky. Her brother is JAKE Gyllenhaal. She got to say "You can go suck a fuck!" Which might be the best line in any movie ever. The Seattle quintet ’ s follow-up to the universally acclaimed The New Romance, and their first album since the addition of keyboardist Leona Marrs, is by far their most ambitious, multifarious, and scorching to date. As expected, Romano Prodi has come out on top in the Italian general election, but it was a lot closer than many expected. Outgoing prime minister Silvio Berlusconi is demanding a recount, but the best he can hope for is a hung parliament and a possible rerun or, even more unlikely, a grand coalition with Prodi.

So I was leafing through some of my comics and I saw an ad for "The Benchwarmers" - a new comedy from the director of Big Daddy, produced by Adam Sandler and starring Rob Schneider, David Spade and Jon Heder. The first thing that came to mind was "Could they possibly plunge any more turd into the toilet water?" Much to my amusement apparently a critic out there agreed with me: "With the writers of Grandma's Boy, the director of Big Daddy, and Schneider, Spade and Heder,'Benchwarmers'can't be accused of a stealth campaign of suck." How any of those men can still get work is utterly beyond me.

• 3. Take The D-train. The Yankees got a pair of three-run home runs -- one of them possibly steroid-enhanced, one of them possibly not -- to win their ninth straight home opener. It was Derek Jeter's blast in the eighth that brought New York back from a 7-6 deficit a bring smiles to the faces of their fans, if only for a day. Don't get too excited though folks, it was only the Royals. It was Jason "Juice Box" Giambi who got the other homer. Beverly Cleary. The author I think most profoundly affected my life. After hearing her on the radio recently it brought flashbacks of childhood back into my mind. I was Ramona Quimby. I had taken the first bite of 20 apples thinking that the first bite was always the best. I did grow up having parents slightly exasperated with me but still love me. It's so odd how a book written about suburbanite white American culture resembled my life so much. I can't believe she's already 90. I always pictured her to be a petite woman with pink lipstick and curly brown hair. Times are changing like crazy. Crazy. I sort of miss the past. I sort of hate growing up and not have anyone to blame for my mistakes. I can feel waves pushing me against the door to the ocean. It's scary as hell.

At least tonight ’ s game should be infinitely more interesting: Pedro Martinez is on the mound in his first start following his beanball orgy last week at Shea. (A quick refresher: Pedro had hit Jose Guillen three times in 45 at-bats prior to last week. Then, last Wednesday, Pedro hit Guillen twice in his first two at-bats, which led to a shouting match and Guillen storming the mound. Pedro also hit another National player, but at no time was he giving a warning by the umpiring crew, the same crew that missed Paul Lo Duca dropping the ball at home plate in the season opener, a gaffe which led to the Mets win.)

• 1. Clerical Mixup Has Reds In First. Hmmm, wasn't Cincinnati scheduled to suck this season? We know it's early, and there's a three-way tie up there, but the Reds are in first place in the NL Central, bringing back memories of those great teams in the'70s featuring Pete Rose and Joe Morgan and George Fos... OK, maybe not. But Cincy did collect six home runs in a 9-2 win over the Cubs on Tuesday, including two by Adam Dunn and one each by pitcher Bronson Arroyo, Edwin Encarnacion (a grand slam), Austin Kearns and Ken Griffey Jr., the latter who is just gon na sneak up and pass Ruth after Bonds fails to do so, you watch.

, I've performed a detailed debunking of a key claim made by John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt in their execrable paper, "The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy." There they assert that Israel "pressured" the United States to attack Iraq, and that Israeli pressure was a "critical element" in the Bush administration's decision to go to war. I bring counter-evidence. We report, you decide.

The Reds lost to that wily old Greg Maddux and the Cubs by a 4-1 score that could have been a lot worse. As many things as went right yesterday, went wrong today. Maddux and two relievers held the Reds to four hits, and issued only four walks, far below the Reds'average thus far. Brandon Claussen wasn't bad in his start, but wasn't especially sharp either. He went five innings and gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts. The good news is the bullpen held, as Mike Burns tossed two shutout innings while allowing three hits, and David Weathers threw a 1-2-3 8th.

Trot Nixon left the game with a groin pull after three innings and will miss five to seven days. Nothing serious, but Trot is getting hurt a little more frequently these days. He missed a good chunk of 2004, and had nagging injuries last season. I suppose on the positive said, this will get more at-bats for Wily Mo Pena right out of the gate. Pena had a tough day yesterday, striking out badly, and letting a fly ball off the bat of Frank Catalonotto glance off his glove and into the bullpen for a home run. It cut the lead to 5-3 in the eighth, and made Keith Foulke's outing look worse then it really was.

I predict Kellie, Ace and Elliot as the bottom three. Only Taylor ’ s “ Crazy Little Thing Called Love ” and Katherine Mcphee with “ Who Wants To Live Forever ” were any good, although Mcphee missed the same note over and over. Chris missed with “ innuendo ” but his vocal was half-decent. Paris almost had it with “ The Show Must Go On. ” The band drowned her out and she didn ’ t hit the chorus as big as she should have.
