The offense again had a big game, polishing off Scott Kazmir and the Tampa Bay bullpen. The Yanks trailed by a run coming up to hit in the 1st. They scored 3 times in the inning and never looked back. Derek Jeter had 3 hits, 3 RBI's, and 3 runs. His batting average now stands at an obscene. 391. Jason Giambi took another step toward beating the mental block he has suffered from as the DH by collecting 2 hits and 3 RBI's. Miguel Cairo got a start at second base for the red hot Robinson Cano. He stepped right in and contributed a pair of doubles. Miguel turned back the clock to 2004, displaying what a pesky hitter he can be while flying under the radar. The offense was relentless, making sure that they would not let a bad team steal a win in the first game of this series.

A former model plans to sue the city of Los Angeles because a rogue cop invaded her privacy on behalf of P.I. Anthony Pellicano. Monika Zsibrita, 33, will claim Pellicano hired a former LAPD sergeant to snoop through confidential records after she made a paternity claim against Chris Rock. "No one from our camp would have ever knowingly entered into an agreement with Pellicano to do anything illegal," Rock's rep told The Post's David K. Li. "Let me put it like this: When you hire somebody to fix your TV, you don't necessarily think he's going to hook you up for free cable."

With all the late inning heroics from both sides, it's easy to overlook the performance (and injury) to Brian Bannister. Was not his best game, but again, he pitched well enough and kept his team in the game. He also helped at at the plate, with two doubles, 2 RBI, and a run scored. But it's what happened just before he scored that had to have scared Met fans a little: with BB on 2nd with two outs, Kaz Matsui (another unsung hero) rapped a double to left. As BB started to run, the running turned into limping, and practically hopped on one foot to cross home plate. Turns out to be another strained hamstring, so his next start may be in jepoardy. Overall, though, he still pitched 6 effective innings, and remains undefeated in his first five starts.

The second shift consisted of Jason Williams, Steve Yzerman and Robert Lang. Williams had a glorious chance just 2: 23 into the period off an odd bounce after taking a surprise drop pass from Lang at the side of the net. He didn't score but 30 seconds later, the play would stop and the shot was reviewed to see if it had actually gone in. It turns out, it had gone off the far goalpost and had not crossed the line.

Sure, the Cubs handed Dontrelle Willis his first career April loss (a meaningless accomplishment, if ever there was one), but the real story was the way Sean Marshall pitched. For the first time since the season started, he really had his curve going, and it was obvious how much having that pitch at his disposal opened up the rest of his game, and he just got better as the contest went along.

The second annual PEN World Voices festival kicked off last night with an event featuring an introduction by Salman Rushdie, a lecture by Orhan Pamuk, and a conversation with Margaret Atwood. I didn't attend (more about why later), so there's really nothing more I can say about it. (Although I heard that Pamuk is just the cutest author.)

The reality TV satire part has Hugh Grant back in the bastard mode that suits him so well, as judge and svengali of America's top rated Pop Idol-alike contest, and baring no little dissimilarity to Simon Cowell. The precocious all-american blonde singer, Sally Kendoo, destined for the final is, in an inspired piece of casting, Mandy Moore - who comes complete with an Iraq War veteran boyfriend she's only staying with the gain votes. So far it's gentle satire, providing the majority of the film's laughs.
