Just in the last week, British Prime Minister Tony Blair initiated a major shake-up of his cabinet, and one of the most prominent victims was Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, who Blair removed apparently over differences in determining what options to consider in responding to Iran's plans to continue their nuclear enrichment program. CBS reported a story from the British newspaper, The Independent, suggesting that a comment made by Jack Straw so infuriated President Bush that the President called Tony Blair to express how upset Bush was at the comments made by Jack Straw. But what comments made by a high ranking official of our most supportive ally in the war in Iraq could so anger President Bush that he would call Tony Blair to complain and demand that the outspoken official be "reined in?"

The N.S.A. eavesdropping exposed in December by James Risen and Eric Lichtblau of The Times is another American debacle. Hoping to suggest otherwise and cast the paper as treasonous, Dick Cheney immediately claimed that the program had saved "thousands of lives." The White House's journalistic mouthpiece, the Wall Street Journal editorial page, wrote that the Times exposé "may have ruined one of our most effective anti-al Qaeda surveillance programs."

Soon to come are the Senate's hearings on Mr. Goss's successor, Gen. Michael Hayden, the former head of the N.S.A. As Jon Stewart reminded us last week, Mr. Bush endorsed his new C.I.A. choice with the same encomium he had bestowed on Mr. Goss: He's "the right man" to lead the C.I.A. "at this critical moment in our nation's history." That's not exactly reassuring.

I know far more Beatles trivia than the average fan. I know all about Paul and Jane Asher and George Harrison and Patti Boyd and how Boyd left Harrison for Eric Clapton. When Pete Best was in town, I went to see him. I have the book "John Lennon, My Brother," signed by the author. And though I do think Mccartney's solo work was kind of dumb, I do own, somewhere, two George Harrison records.

Some of you may remember a few months back my post about Larry Darby, former head of the Atheist Law Center who is now running for attorney general in Alabama. Eugene Volokh and I both wrote posts outing Darby as the total nutball that he is after a series of bizarre posts he made to the Religionlaw listserv that Volokh runs. Now it seems that folks in Alabama are catching on to his barbaric and ignorant views, while Darby takes his crusade to other states. In addition to being a holocaust denier (he says that less than 200,000 people died, and most of them died from typhoid), he also sounds very much like a white supremacist:

I am the first person to say that I don't like Albert Pujols, but I am also going to be one of the first to the first to say that I am tired of hearing about Barry Bonds because it is taking away from what a great start to the season Pujols has put up so far. Of course it is only the beginning of the season, but a lot of great starts lead to great seasons and for Pujols, great is his standard. This is the season where he can step out and prove to everyone that he is without a doubt the greatest hitter in baseball.

a lot since I got back which has been great. Today we went swimming which was a load of fun. Last night we sat down on the sofa together to watch Doctor Who. He's really got into it & it's really nice just to sit there with him. He hasn't hidden behind the sofa yet as I used to when I was his age, but I reckon he's been close. It's very good telly though, isn't it? And Billie Piper is very easy on the eye too. I missed most of the last series so I couldn't really form an opinion on Christopher Eccelston as The Doctor. I do however think that David Tennant is very good indeed. My favourite was always Tom Baker but I liked Jon Pertwee too, even though he will always live in the memory as Wurzel Gummidge. Now that was good telly for kids.

Sony has disappointed me. There wasn't a PSP showing for one, they ripped off the Wii controller shamelessly, and then created a more expensive Tard package to bitch-slap the public again. They are isolating themselves from the market. Sure, I'll own one but I can seriously wait another year or two before I do. Final Fantasy XIII isn't going to get me in line. Neither is anything else that they showed. Okay, Metal Gear Solid 4 looks superb. But I'm just a bandwagon gamer with that franchise. I'll pick it up when its a Greatest Hit. I'm guessing that'll be 30 bucks for the next generation. Bargain!

After the unlikely heroics of Jose Valentin, virtually everyone's lock as most useless Met all season, the Mets had gone into that prolific 8th with an 8-4 lead and Duaner Sanchez, Mr Lock Em Up and Kick Em Out, coming in for what should have been a quick muzzling. Instead he suffered an uncharacteristic breakdown, this on the heels of surrendering his first run of the season the other night in Philly, and this time, a three-run homer to Corey Koskie who had battled back from an 0-2 deficit in the count and narrowed the margin to a lone run followed narrowly later by a Damien Miller homer to tie the game.
