# 69: "In Saddam Hussein, we saw a threat. I went to the United States Congress. Members of both Houses and both political parties looked at the same intelligence I looked at." President Bush, September 10, 2004, Tri-state Milton J. Ferguson Field, Huntington, West Virginia

THE ESCALATING controversy over the National Security Agency's data mining program illustrates yet again how the Bush administration's intrusions on personal privacy based on a post-9/11 mantra of''national security "directly threaten one of the enduring sources of that security: the Fourth Amendment''right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures."

Yet another sign that harmful feedback loops are kicking in: global warming is only going to accelerate if we don't cut CO2 emissions, and quickly. We can all do what we can as individuals, but the essential missing ingredient is leadership. We should have elected Al Gore when we had the chance. No wait — we

For reasons that baffle political analysts -- and me -- Vice President Dick Cheney recently gave Russian President Vladimir Putin a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. Visiting Lithuania, Cheney infuriated Moscow by observing that Russia "has unfairly and improperly restricted the rights of her people." Then, in a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black, Cheney also criticized Russia's oil policy. "No legitimate interest is served when oil and gas become tools of intimidation or blackmail, either by supply manipulation or attempts to monopolize transportation," the vice president intoned. Give us a break!

According to Heather Mills, the answer is, “ No. ” She and her husband, the ex - Beatle Sir Paul Mccartney are divorcing. Mccartney announced the trial separation earlier and blamed the media for the break up -- at a press conference he called. Irony makes my world spin. I find it difficult to believe Mccartney can blame this one on the media. He ’ s been a superstar for 40 + years and ought to know the ends and outs of dealing with reporters hounding by now. His previous marriage lasted thirty some years during the height of his fame until Linda ’ s tragic death. If he wants to keep the ral reason quiet, that ’ s his right, but giving us such a line is ridiculous.

Taylor Hicks won American Idol 5 on the night that Chris Daughtry went home. Taylor ’ s expression on that night showed the same surprise that everyone else showed, but it had to be running through his mind that he just won the competition. When Taylor Hicks does claim the title, he owes a dinner out to Elliott Yamin and Katharine Mcphee ’ s fans. He owes it to Elliott for refusing to give up and leaping ahead of Chris Daughtry with two incredible performances, and he owes it to Katharine Mcphee fans who kept her in the competition despite the fact that she messed up her lyrics.

Ever wonder what Mischa Barton's ex-boyfriend Brandon Davis is up to lately? Me neither. But he found his way into the spotlight by bashing Lindsay Lohan to the paparazzi Tuesday night. The oil company heir mouthed off in a drunken and effeminate fashion, repeatedly calling Lohan a "fire crotch" with "freckles coming out of her vagina." To be fair, the real reason Brandon Davis is in the news isn't because people actually care about what he thinks about anything. It's more because Paris Hilton stood by his side and laughed along, quietly assenting to this

Pop star Britney Spears is doing more for the promotion of child car seat safety than the industry could have ever possibly hoped for, and yet she hasn't earned a dime. The starlet recently committed her second child seat faux pas when she put son Sean Preston in a car seat facing forwards in the back of her Mini Cooper convertible. While California vehicle code doesn't specify which way the child seat should be facing, it does mandate that motorists follow federal guidelines, which clearly state that the seat should be facing backwards.

Okay, how sexy was Denis Leary on The Daily Show just now? HOLY monkey, he gets more adorable every damn day. And he totally gave Hugh Laurie and Blackadder free press. Denis and Hugh, hmmm, never considered THAT pairing before... (I am a sad little slasher) And of course, Jon Stewart jumping on Denis at the end. Um, yes please? Waiter, I'll take a heaping helping of that over at my table, thanks. ROFL Denis and Willam Defoe. NICE.

4. Twenty years ago the U.S. ranked first in the world in the percentage of its people who held a high school degree. Today it ranks tenth, and our position is rapidly declining. In 1970 more than half of the world's science and engineering doctorates came from U.S. universities. By 2001 the European Union granted 40% more than we did. The puny salaries we pay most of our teachers helps explain why the American educational system ranks at the bottom of industrialized societies. Money spent on teacher salaries is the single best index of a nation's future economic health.

The night had lots of potential: Each performer sang three songs -- one chosen by the legendary producer Clive Davis, the second by an "American Idol" judge, and the last by each "Idol." The songs chosen by the judges -- Randy Jackson for Taylor, Paula Abdul for Elliott, and Simon Cowell for Katharine -- were all perfect fits. Only Elliott faltered with his delivery.

And speaking of left for dead, we present the New York Yankees, down 9-0 to the Texas Rangers in the second inning on Tuesday. And they were down 10-1 in the third. But by the ninth, Jorge Posada had connected for a game-winning, two-run homer with two outs, putting the finishing touches on the biggest comeback win in Yankees ’ history, 14-13. Derek Jeter was 4-for-5 with a homer, four RBI and a stolen base. And all of this with three of the Yankees ’ stars in the infirmary. All in all a busy day for Jay Mohr ’ s favorite team.

The broad scope of the Red Hot Chili Peppers'new album'Stadium Arcadium'started taking shape following abandoned recording sessions two years ago. "We were doing a lot of folk music combined with heavy metal," guitarist John Frusciante revealed to Time Off magazine. "We would start out as a folk song, and then build to a punk thing or a heavy metal thing. It was a good experiment, but I feel that what we have done right now is a lot more fluid and a lot more seamless. As songwriters, for us the challenge is to find new ways of peaking other than the obvious ways." Read more.

Retail billionaire Philip Green bid 60,000 British Pounds, that's $114,481 in good ol'American dollars to kiss Kate Moss at a charity auction the other night in London. Taylor Hicks - We all know that Taylor is the fan favorite, though probably not the judges', to win the competition this year. He's the only one of the contestants that has never been in the bottom 2 or 3 on the results show, which means he must have a huge contingent of fans out there - and it doesn't hurt that votefortheworst.com was chosen him as their representative. Taylor's version of "Dancing in the Dark" was the kind of performance people have come to expect from him - complete with his goofy white boy dancing and everything. He also did a fine job with Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful," but I really loved his rendition of Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness," even though (or maybe because) Simon called the ending hideous.

Tom Hanks is so out of place in the movie. He almost looks like he's embaressed to be in it (I would be too, with THAT hairstyle). Audrey Tautou was cute though. Paul Bettany and Alfred Moulina were wasted. But keeping the laws on this tiny island free from scrutiny was where Jack Abramoff and Tom Delay played the biggest role. These corrupt politicians were able to deflect more than twenty laws passed by the Senate that tried to reform the laws on this island. Jack Abramoff paid key congressmen with “ free ” trips to Saipan for family vacations on this tropical paradise. These congressmen were able to vote down in committee all of the more than twenty reform laws passed by the Senate. And, if one were to slip by, Tom Delay would have been able to use his influence to prevent scheduling a full House vote on it. Some of these reform laws were passed unanimously by the Senate, which demonstrates the degree that Tom Delay was able to control the legislature.

Now, though the Paris project was canceled barely a month ago, Allen's already get things going in London for British Movie # 3 (Which doesn't have a title. Shocking, I know.). According to Production Weekly, the movie not only has a plot -- it's "the tale of two brothers with serious financial woes," who become enemies after an outsider persuades them to try crime as a fund-raiser -- and Allen's usual big-name stars: Ewan Mcgregor, Colin Farrell, and Tom Wilkinson. There's no indication of who plays who, but since Mcgregor and Farrell are fairly close in age, I'm hoping Wilkinson is the outsider who screws everything up between them -- he's great when he's seedy and evil.

In Final Fantasy VII on the Playstation, we were treated to reasonably detailed pre-rendered scenery, stunning (for the time) full motion video cutscenes, but rather blocky and undetailed characters. The battle sections were rather higher detailed of course, with especially nice effects for magical attacks. From the screenshots of the 13th installment it ’ s hard to tell which parts are pre-rendered cutscenes and which parts are actual in game shots! The battle sections look truly fantastic, with a combat interface that appears reminiscent of Final Fantasy X.
