Director Ron Howard did a good job of redirecting Dan Brown's potboiler crime novel style into a movie with suspense and flow. Tom Hanks was adequate as Professor Robert Langdon. It wasn't his best performance, but not his worst either (seen Turner and Hooch?). Audrey Tautou, who played Sophie Neveu, was pretty and had suitably sad eyes, and was also adequate for the role. Of course Ian Mckellan almost completely stole the show as Sir Leigh Teabing, seconded only by the surprising Paul Bettany as Silas, the albino monk. They also stayed very true to the book, gently sanitizing it in only a few necessary places and leaving the story mostly intact. All in all, it was a good, solid film in my opinion. Certainly worth seeing in the theater and worthy of a 7 out of 10 on the movie mojo scale.

Enviros are winning the war on convincing the world that we are headed for catastrophic changes in the climate. In the name of science they use small increases in temperture to convince us that 1) the earth is on a nearly irreversible course toward climate damage and 2) it is solely the fault of human activity that has brought us this far. Naturally whackos like Bill Maher, Al Gore, Time magazine, Jamie and Bob have jumped on the bandwagon of earth advocacy and activism. But the facts on global warming are generally never kind to these knee-jerk reactionaries.

According to recent media interviews, two of those songs will be songs they ’ ve sung before on the competition, and the third song is a mystery. If history is any indicator, then the third song will likely be an original song, tailored to better suite the style of whichever singer that American Idol producers have decided they would like to win.

I suppose I should say something about Barry Bonds finally catching up to Babe Ruth in the career home run department. I addressed this topic almost three years ago when Bonds spoke publicly about his pursuit of 714 and ultimately 755. I don't think my feelings have changed much. Both Barry and The Babe are alltime great players, and wherever you choose to rank one in comparison to the other, it doesn't take anything away from either one's accomplishments.

Luskin claims that last May 12, when Rove was supposedly at his attorney's office getting a whole load of bad news from special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, Luskin had accompanied his cat to the vet for some stool tests. The 66-year-old, who plays aristocrat Sir Leigh Teabing in the film, said: “ There were no statements from people in powerful places condemning the book. “ Is that because readers can be trusted to have minds and people that go and see movies need to be protected? “ I think there ’ s a bit of snobbery going on as regards cinema. Cinema-goers are just as intelligent as readers and they will make up their own minds. They will have a fantastic time, a fantastic ride. ”

I believe Sarah Michelle Gallar has the same feeling. She has refused the idea of reprising the role on the big screen, but has still been stuck in genre films like The Grudge -- a decent enough movie. She is trying to get away from the teenie bopper image by appearing in the upcoming movie, Southland Tales. The movie is by Richard Kelly, whomm I have already spoken highly of for Donnie Darko. The movie is about a Los Angeles in the near future, a city about to collapse upon itself because of excess and immorality. The part that has fans all excited? The squeaky clean Gellar has a nude scene.

Malcolm Gladwell reviews the aforementioned book, The Wages of Wins. It's an interesting piece, though at this point I think all serious basketball fans already know that statheads think Allen Iverson is overrated. If you want to see a truly controversial claim, check out this 1999 paper by one of the book's authors looking at the 1997-1998 MVP race. The leading candidates were Michael Jordan and Karl Malone. They conclude that Malone had a superior season, worth 18.83 wins as opposed to Jordan's 16.44 wins. Fair enough.
