So when the President says, as he did today, that "activist courts have left our country with no other choice" than amending the Constitution to ban gay marriage, he is really saying two things that aren't exactly true. First, there are plenty of other options aside from a federal constitutional amendment that Americans may choose from to protect marriage -- and, indeed, Americans all over the country are choosing them, in the form of ballot initiatives and state statutes that ban same-sex marriage. And don't forget the Defense of Marriage Act, the federal statute which has been on the books now for about a decade. That, too, is a choice Americans made long ago in on the debate over same-sex marriage.

I saw "An Inconvenient Truth" this weekend, the Al Gore movie about global warming. Politics aside, if you've seen any slides of the actual presentation Gore has been giving, the design is awe inspiring.

I had a wonderful time today marching in the 14th Queens LGBT Pride Parade and I carried the banner for the Queens Chapter of PFLAG for all but about 2.5 blocks all by myself. Danny Dromm (the founder of the Queens Lesbian and Gay Pride Committee, which sponsors the Parade) spoke about Brenda and allowed me to say a few words. I also brought many leather pride items for myself and Lesbian/gay pride items for my friend upstate. - Larry -

Katie spent the night last night, hence more of the "I'mnotontheinternet" stuff. We had Japanese food and then watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail, played Mancala (which we tied 24 to 24, exactly half) then played Sorry, and put in Noir. I feel asleep around ten, and she said she feel asleep at 11: 11, which was when the Dvd was finished. She liked it, and that's good, because I personally love the series. You know, it makes so much more sense watching it a second time when you know all the

Also, White House spokesbot Tony Snow stepped in it when commenting on the amendment at today's White House press briefing. Raw Story reports that Snow told a reporter that barring same-sex marriage is a "civil rights" matter. When asked to clarify what the hell he meant by "civil rights", he bumbled and fumbled and made an ass out of himself at the podium.

When Ian Mckellen comes on screen for the first time in X-men 3, we see him 20 years younger through the magic of modern technology. Both he and Patrick Stewart we given extensive make-up jobs and had digital effects applied to them to appear much younger... rather than getting other actors to play the younger versions of themselves.

New policies on prisoners being drawn up by the Pentagon will reportedly omit a key tenet of the Geneva Convention that explicitly bans "humiliating and degrading treatment." Citing unidentified but knowledgeable military officials, the Los Angeles Times said the step would mark a further, potentially permanent, shift by the US government away from strict adherence to international human rights standards.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have supposedly asked "American Idol" runner-up Katharine Mcphee to sing at their wedding. Mcphee was said to have met the star-powered couple during a visit to the Church of Scientology in Los Angeles. The Magic Morning Show reports that she has been attending classes there with her boyfriend, and goes on to quote someone saying: "Tom and Katie have become Katharine's biggest fans. They think she's destined to become a singing legend." Don't take any antidepressants, if it doesn't work out, though. Tom wouldn't like that.

Hugo Chavez perhaps doesn't have as much influence outside Venezuela as he might have thought; he strongly supported Ollanta Humala for president of Peru, but Peruvian voters, 5 to 4, spurned him in favor of Alan Garcia, who will return to the presidency after an 11-year absence.

It seems pretty obvious to us that the MSM, in their laziness and partisanship, are going to play stenographer to whatever nonsense John Kerry puts out this time. For details of their shameful behavior, see Thomas Lipscomb, Bruce Kesler and Tom Mcguire for starters. From the awful performance of Michael Kranish in 2004 to the dopey obsequiousness of Kate Zernike today, the MSM have been particularly disgraceful in their coverage of this issue. It is the opposite of MSM professionalism to continue to allow Kerry to obfuscate and get away with bald-faced lies like this:

Brett Ratner was selected as the director for X-men: The Last Stand as Bryan Singer was busy working on Superman Returns. Unfortunately, this means the 3 part of the X-men series attempts to focus on the action/battle sequences rather than the character development which made the movies interesting. Mr. Ratner even went so far as to make the battles flow as much like a comic book battle as he could. This was a horrible mistake as the differences in the two mediums do not allow the flow of a comic book battle to work well on the screen. In a comic book, the audience accepts that the artist can not draw every detail of a battle and they fill in all of the details they need/want with their imagination. With movies, we have a long history of war movies which show that the filmmaker

Cuff links are an important accessory for the well-dressed dad and chances are a dad with good taste in fashion is going to have good taste in drinks. That's what makes these Martini Cuff Links such a good choice for Father's Day. Made of sterling silver, they are highly detailed with an elegant shape and even a small olive on a pick. An added bonus is that they give Dad the chance to play James Bond when he orders his drinks, or otherwise has the occasion to show off his cufflinks. You know he's been dying for an excuse to order his martini "shaken, not stirred." Just hope that he doesn't try to imitate Sean Connery when he does it. Price: $235.

Gregg is a big fan of horror so we watched "The Eyes of Laura Mars", one of his favorites. I am more a fan of romantic comedies. Recently, I have watched "Rumor Has It" with Jennifer Aniston and Kevin Costner, "Just Like Heaven" with Reese Witherspoon, and "Prime" with Uma Thurman and Meryl Streep. I have been I know these movies are not always the best, but I enjoy them. I like the romance. I am looking forward to seeing "Shopgirl" with Steve Martin (and based on his novel).

Nothing in Samuel Alito's confirmation hearing or judicial background suggests he is a friend of affirmative action. Nothing suggests that he would vote the same way that O'connor did when she was faced with similar but not identical race-based issues in the University of Michigan's admission policies. Nothing suggests that he would be unwilling to overturn the Court's 2003 precedent -- to nullify the Court's carefully crafted standards

Woody Allen and England seem to go well together. After his last flick brought his relational psychoses to bear on Jonathan Rhys Meyers and the British Isles, it ’ s time for his wacky comedy side to take a shot at it, albion-style. And with Hugh Jackman as an upperclass (possible) serial killer, Scarlett Johansson as the student investigative reporter and Woody Allen as an elderly, loquacious magician with an obsessive attachment for his young cohort, everything seems stacked in favour of this being a cool little flick. You know, as opposed to

“ The show also made clear the staggering influence of comic books on Hollywood right now, ” Geoff Boucher writes. “ At one point, the new Superman and Lex Luthor (actors Brandon Routh and Kevin Spacey) handed an award to the new Batman (Christian Bale), who proceeded to thank his fiancée, whom he referred to, without irony, as ‘ my Wonder Woman. ’ The show went back to [host Jessica] Alba, who was nominated for her work in two comic book films,

The special election to replace deposed congressman Randy “ Duke ” Cunningham in the California 50th is only hours away, and the latest polling data from Surveyusa has Republican candidate Brian Bilbray and Democrat Francine Busby are in a statistical dead heat. Chris Bowers at Mydd wrote yesterday about how the media portray Ned Lamont ’ s primary challenge against Joe Lieberman as an attempt by extremists to purge the party of anyone deviating from their liberal beliefs, but never have similar stories about primary challenges from the right. This morning NPR ’ s Morning Edition had a story headlined “ Democratic Hawk Faces Antiwar Primary Challenger ” about Marcy Winograd ’ s primary challenge to Rep. Jane Harman in California. It followed the script described by Bowers, so I decided to use the contact form to send a letter to NPR:

Chuck Norris once went skydiving, but promised never to do it again. One Grand Canyon is enough. Chuck Norris is the reason why Waldo is hiding. The Democratic primary for gubernatorial nominee features eight candidates, but only two with any chance: Steve Westly and Phil Angelides. It has been an ugly campaign. Too bad they can ’ t both lose. Well, probably they both will, as I don ’ t expect either to defeat Arnold in November, despite the Governator ’ s less-than-stellar poll ratings.

So it turns out I'm not dead inside, as a number of factors have proven to me today. Yet I seek to deaden my newfound feelings with red wine, chocolate cookies and dumb, unrealistic "romantic comedies" in which Sandra Bullock's character is named Lucy, and others featuring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. And tomorrow I have to interview Trey Anastasio, and I have no idea what to ask him besides "So, what was it like to be in Phish." I've never felt more unprepared in my life. But I'm not sure how much I care about that fact.

The 40-year Old Virgin was really only watchable because of one thing: Steve Carell's fur. So now he ups the ante by playing a Gay man in this summer's Little Miss Sunshine with a beard that probably took him all of two days to grow -- if that. Sigh. At least the eventual DVD release will be cheaper to buy than the latest Titan Video release (and practically accomplish the same thing). Click on Steve to get to the trailer: And there's my Favorite Bear of the Moment right there.

Oh wait, Narnia was not the last movie I went to the cinema to see. More recent than that, I ’ d gone to the movies while in London. I ’ d come out of a meeting with the auction house handling my father ’ s numismatic collection, gone to Chinatown for lunch, and found myself in Leicester Square after lunch wondering what to do, where to go, next. Looking around, I noticed a familiar face on a movie poster and walked up for a closer look. Jodie Foster. With Denzel Washington and Clive Owen in Inside Man. Went to check the screening times, found the next one was just 15 minutes away, so bought myself a ticket and went to the movies in London. On my own, by myself.

The cast is serious Hollywood big time, Crispin Glover is the evil Grendel, and surely Glover plays evil better than most. Angelina Jolie will play Grendel ’ s Mother and according to reports the character is crazy kinky hot beyond anything we ’ ve ever seen Jolie play in real life. On the good side, Ray Winstone plays the main character Beowulf. Anthony Hopkins supports him as King Hrothgar and Robin Wright Penn plays the good queen Wealtheow. Undeniably, this is a cast worth lining up for, especially if Jolie lives up to the early hype …
