Wapo - President Bush arrived in Baghdad today for a face-to-face meeting with new Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-maliki -- an effort, the White House said, to get a clear sense of the premier's priorities and how the U.S. government could help his government succeed.

"An Inconvenient Truth" (PG) is a documentary about Al Gore's campaign to slow global warming. Sounds dull as dirt as I write it, but people who've seen it swear it's anything but. They say if Al had been this charismatic in 2000, he would have not only won the election, he would have actually been our president and we would all be happier people right now. I've read so many rave reviews about this movie that I'm worried my expectations are way too high for a documentary. People say it is funny, intelligent and deeply scary. Playing at the Riverside.

Gadget Madness: Nintendo DS Lite Polar White - I might pick me up one of these to play around with. Nintendo games are just fun; I see several games on Metacritic reviews that I wouldn ’ t mind trying out: Mario Kart DS, New Super Mario Bros., Brain Age, Big Brain Academy. What ’ s with the brain games? I can ’ t remember seeing anything like these on another system. Sudoku sucks on the PSP, the implementation anyway. It couldn ’ t be that hard to code a Sudoku game for the PSP and they still fucked it up. I need to sell a couple PSP games I never play anyway …

Excellent talent, Ghana, though Italy the stronger side clearly. Ghana and Ivory Coast are exciting clubs. But they've both drawn brutal groups, and it doesn't appear any African team will survive this opening stage (although Tunisia, the other decent African side, have yet to play). None of the usual footballing powers of Africa qualified for this Cup. There was a lot of nervous gulping that Africa would not show itself well, and so lose an allotted place for 2010's competition, which awkwardly is in South Africa. Alas, seems nerves were justified.

When I started writing and had to chose a screen name, my first thought was that I wasn't a Hobbit or an Elf or some mythical faerie, I was a normal human being. And I felt that I should perhaps point that out in a very obvious way, in case people only wanted to read fics written by members of their own species.

Penn Jillette said on his radio show and podcast recently that one of the only reasons we remain as free as we are is due to the incompetence of government. That statement really hit home for me, last week Uncle Sam illustrated this point perfectly. The Department of Homeland Security allowed Bruce Decell, a retired NYC cop to enter their building using a fake ID. But wait, it gets even better. The ID was made to look like a Matricula Consular card, which are issued by the Mexican government. According to Federal rules even a REAL card should not be accepted in federal buildings. But wait! There ’ s more! He listed his place of birth as Tijuana, B.C. (Is that British Columbia or Bureau Crash?) and his current address as “ 123 Fraud Blvd. ” In a misspelled Staton Island, NY.

Looking at the pitching matchups for this three-game set, neither team seems to have a clear advantage. Future Hall of Famer Tom Glavine, a decent bet to start next month's all-star game for the NL, goes against Ryan Madson and his 5.74 ERA in the series opener. But Madson handles the Mets: in 18 career appearances against New York, he's put up a 1.61 ERA and held Met hitters to a. 177 average. All those appearances were in relief -- most recently that heroic but doomed seven-inning stint in last month's 16-inning loss -- but, one would hope, pitching is pitching. With Jon Lieber out, Randy Wolf still down, Gavin Floyd and Eude Brito nowhere, Madson pretty much has to be a viable starter for the Phils to hang in this playoff race.
