t 8: 26 am Eastern Daylight Time this morning, we hit the summer solstice. This is the longest day of the year for everyone in the Northern Hemisphere and the day when the sun reaches its northernmost point (about 23.5 ° north) over the Tropic of Cancer. The sun is only directly overhead if you ’ re at the Tropic of Cancer. (And in between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn is the region known as “ The Tropics. ” Go figure!)

In the latest convoluted turn of events in the pissing contest between the insane Stalinist, also known as the “ Eternal President of the Republic ” of North Korea, and the unitary Decider of the United States, we learn that the “ Bush administration is weighing responses to a possible North Korean missile test that include attempting to shoot it down in flight over the Pacific, ” according to the Associated Press.

I leave Canada tomorrow. I think the highlight was seeing a beautiful cinnamon coloured grizzly bear on the side of the road as it was grubbing for insects. I've always seen enough mooses to sink a battle ship. I have decided their nickname should be'dingly donglies'for that silly flap of skin underneath their neck. Today there was a hail storm, so I went to see'Nacho Libre'. It wasn't funny, but the characters were well thought out. Jack Black was his usual self. I think the direction was poor, but I am still in love with Jared Hess. Mmm, sexy man. I hope to see you all very soon on my return!

The Associated Press reports on the House Republicans... up to no good again. They can't agree to re-authorize the Voting Rights Act of 1965 because it is deemed unfair to single out Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia for special Justice Department scrutiny. Rather than cutting the old confederacy some slack in the voting repression category, I'd like to nominate Ohio and Florida for inclusion on the list. (I would have sworn Florida was already on it, but maybe I'm wrong).

The unimaginably brutal torture and decapitations of Privates Kristian Menchaca (23) and Thomas L. Tucker (25) are haunting me. Out of respect to the families, the U.S. military has not disclosed the actual condition their bodies were found in. From various news outlets, one can infer that they were tortured in a “ barbaric ” way, beyond the pale, so bad that their bodies are nearly unrecognizable, requiring DNA testing to determine their identities. Their eyes were gouged out. Other body parts were apparently mutilated. I simply can not imagine the horrifying ordeal they suffered under the hands of Islam.

Chris'12-minute film apparently uses "a significant portion" of Stone's work. Both film center around a pair of rescue workers trapped in debris following the collapse of the towers. Huh. The Miami Heat were the NBA ’ s version of the broken hearts club. Everybody had a sob story to tell. Gary Payton fell short in two Finals with Seattle and the Lakers, not to mention the year his team had the best record and lost in the first round. Jason Williams was in Sacramento when the Kings found a way to lose Game 7 of the Western Conference finals to the Lakers. Shandon Anderson missed twice with Utah, Derek Anderson came close in San Antonio and Antoine Walker had a taste of the conference finals in Boston. And of course, Pat Riley had gone nearly two decades since his last championship.

It means that at local noon (literally, halfway between sunrise and sunset), the Sun will be higher in the sky than it will be for the rest of the year, and every day until December 22 (the winter solstice) it will dip a bit lower. If you live in the southern hemisphere, than this means it ’ s the shortest day of the year, and the Sun will get higher every day, yadda yadda. Just reverse what I said above, or stand on your head if that helps.

Really, really disappointed with A Prairie Home Companion. It's about 1/2 of a great movie, and 1/2 of a total disaster. If it weren't for Lily Tomlin and Garrison Keillor being so damned enjoyable, I might have walked out. I mostly agree with this from Mick Lasalle on this one: That's a little harsher than I'd put it - I could listen to Keillor all day - but otherwise, yeah. The rest of it's an uncomfortable mish-mashy mess of a movie. Such a disappointment. I hadn't disliked an Altman film till now.

Here's Jessica Simpson last night at the launch of the T-mobile Sidekick 3. I have no idea what that white powder crap smeared on her nose-hump is, but I think it's funny that Eva Longoria didn't tell her about it. It confirms my theory that Eva is that bitchy "friend" who lets you walk around with toilet paper stuck to your shoe or a big booger hanging out of your nose because she always wants to be the "hottest" in the group. It's not hard to look hot standing next to the nightmare that is Jessica Simpson. If Eva was posing next to a statue of Fat Elvis sitting on a toilet and taking a dump, then she might lose the beauty contest, but next to Jessica, she really has nothing to worry about.
