WASHINGTON - The House failed Wednesday to override President Bush's veto of a bill to lift his restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. That means the veto stands, killing the measure. The vote was 235-193 to override, 50 votes short of the two-thirds majority required to send the question to the Senate. Bush said the bill crossed a moral line "between science and ethics that can only do damage to both."

After a week of escalating violence, around two dozen Israelis and roughly 200 Lebanese have died. That has been sufficient bloodshed for United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and British Prime Minister Tony Blair to join in the call for an international security force, ignoring the fact that a U.N. force is already in Southern Lebanon, having failed to secure the border against Hezbollah's incursions and attacks and the murder and kidnapping of Israeli soldiers.

According to the Democrats, we can ’ t attack Iran until we have signed affidavits establishing that it has nuclear weapons, but we also can ’ t attack North Korea because it may already have nuclear weapons. The pattern that seems to be emerging is: “ Don ’ t ever attack anyone, ever, for any reason. Ever. ”

The current focus of environmental policy is focused on global warming, in large thanks to Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth. However, our country needs to address another truth, one that will become tangibly more visible as we develop new technologies: e-waste is a growing menace, and if left unchecked and unregulated, it could cause irreparable harm to the environment around us. Just as Gore says about alternative energy, instituting a recycling policy will not cost corporations more - in fact, it is a very profitable business. The secondary products produced from recycling, such as glass, can be used easily by other companies in their products.

Addendum: I disagree with Newt Gingrich's World War III nomenclature. If anything qualified as WWIII, it would be the Cold War, a truly global struggle between two superpowers that touched nearly every nation on the planet. The GWOT still has more of the tinge of the conflict with the Barbary Pirates in the early 19th century. It has the capability of becoming a regional war in southwest Asia, but I think the WWIII tag is rather hyperbolic.

The struggle for the Bush administration is in contemplating the downside in having gas at these levels just before the House elections. This is the conversation Mcgovern believes the movers and shakers in the Bush administration, namely Donald Rumsfeld, Karl Rove and Dick Cheney have had, or are having, with Bush in the Oval Office, (presumably with the tape recorders switched off):

If you've gotten just a little too good at your Nintendo DS games and are looking for more of a challenge -- and also looking to void your warranty -- now there's a way to hack your console for making everything run almost twice as fast. A Japanese modder has just posted step-by-step directions (in Japanese, unfortunately) for re-wiring a DS Lite to perform at a claimed 1.7x speed, complete with a toggle switch in case you decide that turbo mode isn't appropriate for all occasions. It looks like you have to be pretty handy with a soldering iron to tackle this particular project, so if you've got the skillz and about four hours to waste on tinkering around with your DS's sensitive circuitry, then accelerated performance -- and funny-sounding audio -- will be your reward.

Ehud Barak's 2000 capitulation in Lebanon was a parody of Dunkirk. Israel had agreed to a capitulation in exchange for nothing. The Hizbullah continued to shell northern Israel after the withdrawal, and sometimes sent in infiltrators who murdered and kidnapped. Overall, however, the death toll was below what it had been when Israeli troops were inside Lebanon. The Israeli chattering classes saw that as a great victory and as a precedent for solving the problems of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. All Israel needed to do was have a unilateral withdrawal and build a nice fence.

It seems almost impossible to find a book these days which does not feature some cover blurb about the bloody Da Vinci Code or Dan bloody Brown. "Comparable to the Da Vinci Code"... "If you like the Da Vinci Code, you'll love this"... etc etc. The absolute limit is when some moron claims that Umberto Eco's "Foucault's Pendulum" is too difficult to read and not as good as the "Da Vinci Code". Listen, the Zürich phone book is comparable to the Da Vinci Code, although it is more rewarding to read and is far better written. The only book that I've ever read which I would say is worse than the Da Vinci Code is, well, Angels and Demons, by Dan Brown. Actually, it is more or less the same book, except it is slightly worse written (difficult to imagine, I know), and even more ludicrous.

That research, which I wish I ’ d put into my hard drive, made me believe that Embryonic stem cells are like uncut heroin … waaaay, way to powerful to use - they are part of begotten life in its purest form (perhaps still too near to God for our fooling with) - and they are so maleable as to be (so far in research) unpredictable and unusable. And that ’ s not even getting into the moral and ethical questions of whether or not a human embryo should be exploited in such a way, particularly when Adult Stem Cells are showing remarkable results in everything from helping sufferers of Sickle Cell Anemia and Thallassemias Major and Minor, to spinal injuries, skin regeneration and more.

I do know, however, that there's no use in taking chances when you 're betting on Joe Lieberman's integrity. We've all seen how willing he is to abandon the Democratic party and the primary voters who have put their faith in him over the past 18 years in order to save his own hide. Several prominent anti-abortion politicians, including Orrin Hatch and Bill Frist, joined the Senate majority in endorsing the public funding of embryonic stem cell research. To the casual observer it might appear that the arguments against abortion must be stronger than those against publicly funding the destruction of embryos. This conclusion, however, would be mistaken. The funding of destructive embryo research is actually worse than legal abortion.

The Yanks were still trailing 4-2 in the 9th when Andy Phillips led the inning off with a double. Aaron Guiel brought him in with a base hit with one out, and moved to third on an infield single by Jorge Posada in which he probably should've been called out. Johnny Damon followed that up with a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Alex Rodriguez, who was out of the lineup with what Joe Torre said was a bruised toe, entered the game as a pinch hitter and struck out in his only at bat, which was interrupted halfway through with a 2 hour rain delay. Both teams went scoreless in the 10th and Melky Cabrera led off the bottom of the 11th and ended the game with his 4th home run of the season.
