Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Tuesday that the time has come for a new Middle East and an urgent end to the violence hanging over the region. Israeli Prime Minister said Tuesday he would open aid corridors into Lebanon.

Incidentally, Josh Bolten said that he hasn't spoken to the President "about the use of particular terminology." So, are we left to believe that the White House Chief of Staff hasn't asked why Mr. Bush is against stem cell research for which he just exercised his first veto... but Tony Snow has?? What's going on there?

I didn't blog this yesterday because of the Bill Clinton event, but Carl Feen, Joe Lieberman's first finance chair, endorsed Ned Lamont. There's a long backstory here involving anti-war Connecticut politics in the 1970s and a group of young reformers all coming into their own at the same time. Lieberman was a young progressive in those days, having worked in the civil rights movement and challenging a staid status quo. His gradual turn to the far right is a political tragedy, a textbook example of an institutionalist who gets bought off by the system without even realizing it.

Once again pushing the envelope on ethics, Roll Call reveals that Rick Santorum ’ s reelection campaign and PAC have paid a dozen members of his personal and leadership staff over $82,000 since early 2005, creating a potential conflict of interest. In the race, Bob Casey attacked Santorum for standing in the way of a higher minimum wage, more accessible health care and a balanced budget, also taking him to task for being a rubberstamp for Bush.

The conservatives, who include Newt Gingrich, Richard Perle and leading current and former members of the Pentagon and National Security Council, have urged the president to transfer Miss Rice out of the State Department and to an advisory role. They said Miss Rice, stemming from her lack of understanding of the Middle East, has misled the president on Iran and the Arab-israeli conflict.

The Miss Universe pageant was held recently and Miss Puerto Rico won (and then fainted backstage). She is fine and people in Puerto Rico are very happy. In Indonesia, on the other hand, they are considering charging their contestant with indecency because she wore a swimsuit that exposed her body in the pageant.

But if those conditions must be met before a cease fire can start, hundreds and perhaps even thousands more Lebanese civilians will die. Would the U.S. and Israel really prefer to sacrifice those lives rather than stop the bombing and start negotiating?

During the 13 days in which Hezbollah rockets have killed about 40 Israelis in northern Israel, Israeli airstrikes have displaced more than 700,000 Lebanese, destroyed much of the country's infrastructure, and killed about 380 Lebanese-most of them civilians, and about a third of them children. Last Sunday's targets included two ambulances racing an injured family to a hospital in Tyre -- but not moving quite fast enough. They were directly hit by Israeli bombs that wounded six Red Cross volunteers and left the injured family still more shattered.

An anonymous reader writes "The Denver Channel 7 News reports that federal air marshals are operating under a quota for reporting a minimum number of suspicious travelers which is resulting in innocent people being placed on a secret government watch list. From the article:'These unknowing passengers who are doing nothing wrong are landing in a secret government document called a Surveillance Detection Report, or SDR.'"

Though he's not off in the Caribbean with Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom, Tom Cruise has won a battle against a different set of pirates, hell-bent on using the actor's name to steer fans arriving on tomcruise.com towards a different site selling goods and services. The dangerous internet pirates, who go by the mysterious name of Network Operation Center/Alberta Hot Rods, were ordered to hand the domain name over to Cruise... or else, well, (insert your best "Scientology Takes Over the World" joke here).

LAWRENCE LESSIG - WHERE THE TRUTH LIES. Discusses Inconvenient Truth and Al Gore. The media's own inconvenient truth being easily manipulated by those whose "salary depends on our understanding" the facts (to reuse Gore's favorite Upton Sinclair quote.) When aging hippies turn bad... Apparently the Steely Dan guys are pissed that Owen Wilson hasn't acknowledged the great debt that You, Me, and Dupree owes to their song "Cousin Dupree," so they've written an open letter to Luke Wilson trying to talk some sense into him.

To that question both the president and Secretary Rice answer that the U.S. will not call for a ceasefire until they can be sure it will be "sustainable." And they do not think it can be sustained until Hezbollah has surrendered its arms, withdrawn at least 12 miles from the Israeli border, and given up control of southern Lebanon to the Lebanese army or to an international force. And of course Israel must also have its two soldiers back. As Israel's Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni told Der Spiegel in an interview published today, the two soldiers must be "unconditional [ly]" released and "Hezbollah must be completely disarmed."

John Mccain paid his umpteenth visit to the Daily Show last night. The intricate serial dance he and Jon Stewart are engaged in is really something to watch. Mccain is clearly in it for the demographic boost, and to try to perpetuate the now dead Straight Talker myth. Stewart is always polite, but asks very pointed questions which Mccain doesn't answer. Video here. Anyone else watch? Is it just my prejudice, or are Mccain's efforts ever more strained?

The civilian deaths in Lebanon are not "collateral damage" of the hunt for Hezbollah terrorists -- they are atrocities directed against the civilian population that have taken place from the beginning of the invasion and are indisputably war crimes. We don't read the European response in our daily press (even our allies the UK and Iraq (!) have broken with the US on its support of Israel's actions).

With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, the heat on the Alfonso Soriano trade rumors is only getting hotter. Yesterday came word that not only had the White Sox entered the race to win Soriano, they were by some accounts "extremely close" to a deal, with Nats officials working late into the night to work something out. One problem: White Sox GM Ken Williams said he doesn't plan to give up any of his top-line prospects, like pitcher Brandon Mccarthy, for Soriano.

piece of bull today from Hezbollah's Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah is a classic, check out Michael van der Galien's take: "I Told Lebanese Political Leaders We Would Abduct Israeli Soldiers". Just in time to put a spanner in the works as a welcoming gift to Secretary Rice, who has today made a surprise visit to Beirut, in an effort to shore up Lebanon's fragile government. Entourage's breakout star (finally!) Jeremy Piven will be 41 tomorrow, but he's already started celebrating. There was a birthday party at a Malibu beach house a couple of days ago, which of course found little miss Lindsay Lohan in attendance, and in a nude bikini. (She really needs to stay home one or two days a week.) Piven looks a bit non compos mentis, like, What's this brown thing in front of me and who's that guy next to me and oh wow is that redhead naked? And Piven's upper body? Those party abs of his have preceded his HBO series in the UK. Not bad for a 41-year-old. Lohan looks good for 41, too. (via splashnewsonline)

There is an altogether exceptionally interesting collection at the Chronicle of Higher Education's Web site of bloggers'thoughts on the decision at Yale not to hire Juan Cole as a professor there. The commentaries, for the most part, discuss the role of Cole's blogging in the non-hiring. Many talk about academic freedom and how it was or was not implicated by this situation, and the pieces are a great read. I, however, found Brad Delong's commentary about why blogging matters to the academy to be one of the most informative. He captured very nicely the thoughts that have driven me to blog as well:

Ever wonder if the cute but chubby little stay puff marshmallow that is Britney Spears baby, Sean Preston, is really the son of aspiring rapper Kevin Federline? I mean c ’ mon the one thing K-fed has going for him is his bone structure and little Sean doesn ’ t look like he ’ s got a bone in his whole body. After looking at pic ’ s of Brit ’ s kid in celebrity gossip mags it occurred to me that Sean Preston doesn ’ t look a lot like K-fed, in fact he kind of looks like Nien Nunb – that crazy lookin ’, juicy lipped, creature that flew next to Lando Calrissian in Return of the Jedi. The movie ’ s co-writer and director, Paul Haggis, has so far made less than $300,000 on the film, a pittance by Hollywood standards. Lady in the Water tells the story of Cleveland Heep (Paul Giamatti), a mopey building manager that stutters with self-doubt. Christopher Reeve or Brandon Routh? Honestly, this is a toss up. Reeve was sexy, funny, charismatic, and strong. Routh portrayed the superhero as a man who returned to a life of saving our world as a way to heal himself with the loss of his own. Almost like a man who immerses himself in his work in order to prove something to himself. The savior metaphor worked well for me, though the whole form-a-crucifix-as-you 're - falling seems unoriginal and a bit obvious.

This is a ridiculous fiction being told by the religious right constantly on this issue. They've taken the fact that adult stem cells are useful in some treatments (which is true) and exaggerated it beyond belief, now claiming that they have more promise than embryonic stem cells. But that is a claim that not even those stem cell researchers who oppose the use of embryonic stem cells for such research will not back up. The Chicago Tribune did an excellent job of tracking down those researchers and putting the White House on the spot on the issue.

The Israeli military would be well advised to study the U.S. failure to dislodge the North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong from the Iron Triangle in Vietnam. If you have not heard the names "Cedar Falls" and "Junction City" it is time to get out your history books. These were two major combat operations conducted in 1967 in the Iron Triangle, a jungle fortress controlled by the North Vietnamese located to the northwest of Saigon. These operations were supposed to sweep the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese from the Iron Triangle. Despite air superiority, massive artillery bombardment, and assaults by thousands of U.S. soldiers, the North Vietnamese ultimately retained control of the territory.
