Today Esther and I went to go see “ Little Miss Sunshine ” which was a fabulously funny “ movie about a family with nothing in common. ” It was a great little flick and while I know it ’ s going to do horribly at the box office, I would highly recommend going to see it. It has Steve Carell who played a seriously funny part. A good netflix if you ’ re on that system.

My favorite parts of the Emmys were "The Daily Show" wins. I loved seeing Stephen Colbert hugging and kissing Jon Stewart. Awww. I got mad when Stephen lost out to Barry Manilow. I loved when Jon gave a shout out to Stephen during the speech for writing in a comedy, musical, or variety show. When they presented together and Stephen started calling the people heathens and telling them to bow down to their golden idol, it turned out he was really just upset over losing to Barry Manilow. It was the best moment of the night.

Bush's strongest supporter in Europe continues to be British Prime Minister Tony Blair, but many in Blair's own Foreign Office, as a former diplomat said, believe that he has "gone out on a particular limb on this" - especially by accepting Bush's refusal to seek an immediate and total ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. "Blair stands alone on this," the former diplomat said. "He knows he's a lame duck who's on the way out, but he buys it" - the Bush policy. "He drinks the White House Kool-aid as much as anybody in Washington." The crisis will really start at the end of August, the diplomat added, "when the Iranians" - under a United Nations deadline to stop uranium enrichment - "will say no."

While technically summer will continue past the September 1st mark, my summer will effectively end that day with a aeroplane ride to Ontario. At which time I will no longer be able to, with any semblence of a successful academic career that is, sleep till 12-2pm everyday, watch the Daily Show/Colbert Report twice (they come on again starting at 230am by the way), and go out every night of the week. This is depressing enough in it's own right, but when I consider the awesomosity of this summer it amplifies my grief ten-fold.

PLAME AND ARMITAGE .... Catching up with the weekend news, I see that David Corn and Michael Isikoff have definitively named former State Department # 2 Richard Armitage as the guy who leaked Valerie Plame's name to columnist Robert Novak three years ago. Apparently it happened on July 8, 2003, two days after Joe Wilson published an op-ed in the New York Times about his prewar trip to Niger to investigate the "uranium from Africa" story.

This means that the Solar System consists of eight “ planets ” Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. A new distinct class of objects called “ dwarf planets ” was also decided. It was agreed that “ planets ” and “ dwarf planets ” are two distinct classes of objects. The first members of the “ dwarf planet ” category are Ceres, Pluto and 2003 UB313 (temporary name). More “ dwarf planets ” are expected to be announced by the IAU in the coming months and years. Currently a dozen candidate “ dwarf planets ” are listed on IAU ’ s “ dwarf planet ” watchlist, which keeps changing as new objects are found and the physics of the existing candidates becomes better known.

Every television animated program hasb at least one person doing at least two voices. On South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone do more than one voice. On The Simpsons, there are numerous voices done by various actors. On Family Guy, Seth Macfarlane does the voices of the following characters: Brian, Stewie, Peter, and Quagmire. In contrast, on the sticom King of Queens, Kevin James plays Kevin James ’ character and that ’ s it. So there is this certain versatility in the field of animation. That crazy character you ’ ve been working on can come to life in ways never possible in real sitcom format.

Usually I watch the Emmys... I can't remember if I watched last year's, but last night I didn't (no reason... well, Donavan was in my room watching tv & my mom wanted to watch something else; not the Emmys). Anyway, I read who the winners were and I am glad Mariska Hargitay ("Law & Order: SVU") won for Lead Actress in a Drama Series and Megan Mullally (above pic, "Will & Grace") won for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series!!! I am not surprised "Amazing Race" won for Reality-compitition show and "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" won for Reality show. Congratulations to all the winners (not just these guys/shows). One thing I am surprised about that the Emmys aired in August. It usually airs in September. Hmmm... Maybe next year I will watch the Emmys.

As the most visual member of Monty Python, it's no surprise that Terry Gilliam ended up as the most prolific film director of the bunch. After cutting his teeth on a few animation shorts, Gilliam began his live action resume by co-directing the famed comedy troupe's own Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), following up with the underrated Jabberwocky (1977), Time Bandits (1981) and The Crimson Permanent Assurance, the short feature that preceded Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (1983). He's directed a handful of excellent films since then --- including my personal favorite, 12 Monkeys (1995) --- but few were as talked-about, debated and dissected as Brazil (1985), a black comedy with a heart of gold or engine of gold, more appropriately.

On a quiet box office weekend, Mark Wahlberg and his Invincible co-stars effortlessly outdistanced the competition: The film earned about $17 million over three days, while nothing else even broke the $10 million mark. In its fourth week in release, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby took in $8 million, good enough for the second spot; finishing third was Fox Searchlight's indie dreamboat Little Miss Sunshine which, after doubling its exposure to just over 1400 screens, made about $7.5 million, pushing its total earnings to $23 million. Though we still don't know exactly how much Fox spent on the rights to the movie, it's hard to believe they 're not extremely please with its success so far -- only the craziest suit could possibly have dream of something like this.

She also spoke to Chandra Wilson (from Grey's Anatomy, I'm sorry to all House fans who dispise the show but I can't help but like it) and I saw Sandra Oh arrive, who looked gorgeous.

Anyway, with that I had two significant encounters today along those lines. CNN ran an obituary about a woman in Ecuador who died. The significant thing is that she was born the same year as Charlie Chaplin and Adolf Hitler - 1889. She was 116 years old and was the oldest living person according to Guinness Book of World Records. She got married the year the United States entered World War I. Truman was in his full term as president 32 years later when her husband died. And I marveled that we are quickly running out of those who were alive in the 19th century when Queen Victoria ruled an empire where the sun was always shining somewhere. Soon it will all be left to books and no living memory will be around to tell any tale of those days. And that just struck me. I ’ m not sure why.

From violet to lavender, purple was definitely a dominant hue on the red carpet last night at the Emmy Awards. My favorite look was Evangeline Lilly. She looked absolutely gorgeous in her Versace dress and Neil Lane jewels - very simple and elegant. Her hair looked pretty and natural … very fitting for her look. One of the worst? Cheryl Hines in her taffetta, appliqué see-through back gown. Others pictured above include Jamie Lynn Sigler, Leah Remini in Versace, and two stars from my favorite show, Grey ’ s Anatomy: Ellen Pompeo in Christian Dior (very brave for wearing velvet, maybe a little weather inappropriate and too severe hair) and Sandra Oh in Vera Wang (pretty dress, but accessories overload).

President Bush has worked hard to talk up the strength of the economy, dispatching his new Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson to try to sell the American people on the notion that today's economy is the best we have ever had. But numbers, unlike the current administration, do not lie. And as Steven Greenhouse and David Leonhardt report for The New York Times, the data clearly show that the economy is leaving behind countless Americans -- and Republicans in Congress are accordingly worried about the consequences of this reality.

It's no secret that the Bush Administration values politics and press opportunities over policy. But the dichotomy between the White House media campaign marking the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the harsh reality Gulf Coast residents have been facing these past 12 months is unconscionable. President Bush has devoted more time and preparation to this public relations blitz than to helping the people of the Gulf Coast.
