There is only one time when I will ever root for Michigan, and that is during a Notre Dame game. And dammit, they kicked the ass of those sissy Irish. It's about time. I'm sure the pollsters will drop Notre Dame all of two spots or so, but screw them! I know that the team is overrated, Brady Quinn will not win the Heisman, and the Fighting Irish are racist. Not to mention hostile and abusive. I'm glad they lost, final score 47-21 in favor of Michigan. Now I can go back to hating Michigan. The only team I hate more than Michigan, and Notre Dame, is Green Bay. But then again, I think I would root for the Packers against Notre Dame. Yeah, kick their asses.

Not surprisingly for those familiar with Catholic thought, the pope seems to prefer to think of God as rational. It appears that the pope believed he could simultaneously illustrate his theological point and argue against religiously-motivated violence by quoting a 14th century text in which a Byzantine emperor and an "educated Persian" discuss the relative merits of Christianity and Islam. Here is what the pope actually said:

I have decided that the very beginning scene of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - the chocolate being made - is pure evil. I want chocolate now. Vast amounts of chocolate.

Tonight the first episode of'Talk Show with Steve Fergeson'aired on FOX. This new Saturday night at Midnight talk show seems to take the best of Jon Stewart's Daily Show and Stephen Colbert's Colbert Report sets, and tried to used the blue lights for a major dramatic effect. Why? Well, they don't have much more - lack of budget according to Steve. To supplement their quirky'Idiot Paparazzi'skit, they'hired a local newsreporter'to report on West Hollywood. The ensuing skit ends in'No matter where to you go in West Hollywood, they are cramming semen down your throat. "Nice. Time for the first commercial break.

Does anyone know where I can find an ACCURATE sync of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" with The Wizard of Oz??? I've been bored all day, so I've researched lots of it and seen clips, but I want to see the whole thing! I've tried Bittorrents, but they just screw up on my PC, and I'm still waiting in queues with regular old P2P file-sharing... The closest I can get is one on Google Video, but it's about two seconds off. The woman screaming should be heard exactly as Producer Mervin Leroy's name appears, but in the full versions I've viewed online, it comes in too early. Anyone know where I can find a full, accurate version???

At Foxb's party, stealing nets while I can, life without the internet sucks only because its how I keep in touch with my friends. Thus spending last week (and probably next week: P) in Sheffield means I ve been fine. But will be spending Monday and Tueday all alone in Manchester. Oh yeah, I also bought a Nintendo DS lite and Advance Wars DS, because it was inevitable and I have the money at the moment to not feel guilty about it. Plus it will be useful for the regular train journies to Sheffeild. And, people in Sheffield (if you are reading this...) please do say if I start to get on your nerves. Salmon Rushdie on that mediocre crapfest, The Da Vinci Code: "Do not start me on ‘ The Da Vinci Code. ’ A novel so bad that it gives bad novels a bad name." When asked the question: "Should you kill people because you don ’ t like their books?" Rushdie said no. "Even Dan Brown must live. Preferably not write, but live." Awesome.

First a little college football. Oklahoma got robbed. At least I think the Sooners got robbed. Two close replay calls went against them. The Sooners did their part, too, giving up two touchdowns in a 26-second span after Oregon fans had begun heading for the exits. OU had a potential-game winning field goal blocked at the end. Bob Stoops has every reason to be mad. He said it was the toughest loss he'd had. Adrian Peterson had 166 of his 211 rushing yards in the second half.

Go to the Ladies room in the movie theater. What do I see in the first stall? SHIT. What do I see in the second stall? BLOOD. You goddamn, dirty, foul lil'bitches. If you need to shit 'n get, flush the fucking toilet. If you need to change your tampon, flush the fucking toilet. The Wicker Man is a weird movie, but when in the hell did Nicholas Cage become a terrible actor? Yeah, yeah, I was terribly mistaken that he could act in the first place.

I saw Fearless yesterday and Nacho Libre today. Fearless, kung-fu wise, is awesome, but it goes much, much deeper than that. The visual style, early 1900s China/Shanghai, is excellent. You get a dose of kung-fu and morality package in simply an excellent way. Simply: beautiful. I suppose part of its beauty is that it's so foreign and exotic, in Chinese (and some Japanese!), without the terrible cliches of American writing. Time well spent watching, is the bottom line. Jet Li, in his last martial arts epic, goes out in style. Time well spent, for the lessons you get out of it. Absolutely. Today I saw Nacho Libre, Jack Black, Mexican setting, tongue in cheek. A good waste of 90 minutes, it's not bad.

On Suriccata's advice we went to see "The Illusionist" this afternoon, surely one of the least publicized great movies of the year. It's a period piece, set in Austria, a love story, a costume drama, a mystery, a tale of many twists. Filmed in sepia tones that add to the melancholy that lingers around the edges of the story. Cast includes Edward Norton (!), Paul Giamatti, Jennifer Biel, and Refus Sewall. Highly recommended.

This morning I saw Perfume - the story of a murderer The book by Patrick Süskind was and is huge in germany. It's read in class. It's become a real classic and I totally fell in love with it when I first read it. It was never turned into a film because it was thought to be too olfactory to be a good movie. But now Tom Tykwer, who also directed Run Lola Run, gave it a shot. And I saw it this morning in a free screening for teachers. It's a very sensual, gripping movie with beautiful sound and beautiful pictures. It starrs Alan Rickman, Dustin Hoffman, Ben Wishaw and Rachel Hurd-wood. You should all go and see it if it ever comes to a theater near you!

Spicy debate on "Meet The Press" today between Senator George Allen (of "macaca" fame) and challenger Jim Webb, to whom Tim Russert lobbed a nice softball to start in the guise of a gotcha, noting that Webb had supported Allen for Senate in 2000. Six years ago - a neat opportunity for Webb to say that hey, Allen had his chance to impress him, and he didn't. And that goes double for the rest of the Republicans.
