Since the revelation that Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert knew of Foley's dabblings for a long time and never did anything about it, there have been calls for Hastert's resignation. He refuses, but the demand is gathering momentum, and if he's seen as a further impediment to Republican victories next month, don't expect him to last. When the majority leader, John Boehner, was asked about Foley, he instantly passed the buck to Hastert: "I believe I talked to the speaker and he told me it had been taken care of. My position is it's in his corner, it's his responsibility." Hastert, meanwhile, passed the buck to the Democratic Party. "We have a story to tell," he sniffed, "and the Democrats have -- in my view have -- put this thing forward to try to block us from telling the story."

What is not sad or tragic, but purely despicable is Tom Reynolds, Chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee. Tom knew about the messages months ago and he did basically nothing, or rather he told some other Republicans including Dennis Hastert (the Speaker of the House) and they collectively decided to do nothing. In particular, they decided not to mention it to the Pages Committee, which is bipartisan and thus includes a Democrat, who might, perhaps, have blown the whistle and prevented further abuses.

Foley's emails to underage pages should have raised a major red flag and the Republican leadership, including Rep. Reynolds, should have investigated immediately. But like numerous other Republican leaders, Reynolds failed to ask the tough questions, choosing instead to cover up the facts. If they had investigated, they would have likely discovered the now widely reported additional sexually explicit communications showing that Rep. Foley was communicating with multiple children and inviting minors to dinner. Joe Torre wisely started Chien-ming Wang, who allowed eight hits in 6 2/3rds innings but maintained his composure throughout. Torre then inserted Mike Myers at the bottom of the 7th. Maybe the Tigers lost their steam once they lost 1st place in the division to Minnesota or maybe the Yanks are just too good. There is power all over this New York lineup and when about every player is batting around or above. 300 then you are in for a hell of a post season. The pitching may not necessarily be there but that can be out measured drastically with the bats. A healthy Mike Mussina would have pretty much guaranteed a World Series victory but the young arms will have to lead the Yanks. I mean with guys like Derek Jeter, A-rod, Jason Giambi, Melky Cabrera, Gary Sheffield, Bobby Abreu, Johnny Damon and Robinson Cano making up your lineup you better expect to go far.

Not only do the Mets not have a reliable staff, they don't have a reliable starter. Mets fans who point to Tom Glavine should realize he is a finesse left-hander that doesn't strike out enough people. The Dodgers'rotation -- Derek Lowe, Hong-chih Kuo, Greg Maddux, Brad Penny -- looks better than the Mets'. Still, the Mets won 97 games for a reason, and they should be the favorites to beat the Dodgers. It won't be easy, and the series will likely go five games.

A Colorado man who was arrested in June on harassment charges after he approached Vice President Dick Cheney to denounce the war in Iraq filed a federal lawsuit on Tuesday accusing a Secret Service agent of civil rights violations. The man contends that he was fully within his rights when he approached Cheney at an outdoor mall and said, in a calm voice, “ I think your policies in Iraq are reprehensible ”. Ten minutes later, when the man walked back through the area, a Secret Service agent handcuffed him and told him he was under arrest for “ assaulting ” the vice president.

How is it this guy is so concerned about Foley he goes to the leadership numerous times but doesn ’ t go public? We are talking about sexual predation on kids here. What if Fordham did talk to folks like Rogers and Aravosis and decide he would take care of things in a different manner than calling the police (the obvious answer). I can ’ t believe that this only earned Albert Haynesworth 5 games. I am also amazed that 5 games is the longest ever suspension. In the Rugby codes they regularly hand out longer suspensions for much lesser offences than kicking a guy (Andre Gurode) who is on the ground and giving him a head wound that requires 30 stitches. I would suggest that something as blatant as this in the NRL or Super 14 would have cost half a season at least possibly longer if he was a repeat offender. 5 managers have been fired this offseason and so far, none of them is named Eric Wedge. I definitely wouldn't mind Joe Girardi in the dugout. Frank Robinson wouldn't exactly be a bad choice either. Dusty Baker, Buck Showalter and Felipe Alou are the other guys who've been fired. I don't really care for any of these guys. I like Sabathia not having arm problems, so Baker is out. Alou is too old and Showalter doesn't really generate a whole lot of excitement. I wasn't a huge Wedge hater, but it wouldn't hurt to take a look at these guys.

No one needs to tell Torii Hunter that he made a bad mistake. Diving full length for a ball he never looked like reaching was an error of judgement, the sort of thing you just do not expect from such a great outfielder. Mark Kotsay may have looked short of breath sitting on the bench following his inside the park home run, but it was the Twins who really had the air taken out of them on that play.

Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz ’ s on-screen reunion will have to wait a few more years as they have both dropped out of the dramedy, A Little Game Without Consequence, due to “ substantive creative differences ”. Carrey and Diaz were last seen together in The Mask which ended up being a classic somewhat. It makes sense the studios would be banking on another team up like Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock in The Lake House.

In the 2nd inning of the 1st playoff game between the Mets & the Dodgers, Russell Martin lined a single to right off the wall with runners on 1st & 2nd with nobody out. Dodger 3rd base coach did his best Joey Cora imitation, waving Jeff Kent & J.D. Drew plateward. NY Mets rightfielder Shawn Green fired the ball to secondbaseman Jose Valentin, who relayed it to catcher Paul Loduca. Kent held up thinking Green might catch the ball and was tagged out at home. Loduca was showing the umpire he still had the ball when he looked up, surprised to see Drew trying to score, and tagged him out as well. Martin should have been credited with a double, but only got a single when Kent failed to score from 2nd base. John Maine allowed four straight hits, but only one run in the 2nd inning.

What's so impressive about what co-runners Matt Stone and Trey Parker have achieved is their attaining such lofty status while harboring a complete disdain for the way the whole Hollywood game is played. They not only bite the hand that feeds them, they pretty much devour it on a regular basis. They seem to remain completely unimpressed with themselves, taking their art seriously but themselves not at all. They 're all about the joke. Nothing else matters. They have no cows, sacred or otherwise. They live only to shoot down the pompous, the crazy, the sanctimonious and the arrogant, and this they do with uncanny razor-sharp precision.
