The term "software" was first used in this intellect by John W. Tukey in 1957. In computer science and software engineering, computer software is all computer program. The perception of reading different sequences of instructions into the memory of a apparatus to control computations was invented by Charles Babbage as part of his difference engine. The theory that is the source for most modern software was first projected by Alan Turing in his 1935 essay Computable numbers with an application to the Entscheidungs problem.

The first, lesser reason is the demonstrated ability of Republican Congressional leaders to keep their members in line, even those members who cultivate a reputation as moderates or mavericks. G.O.P. politicians sometimes make a show of independence, as Senator John Mccain did in seeming to stand up to President Bush on torture. But in the end, they always give the White House what it wants: after getting a lot of good press for his principled stand, Mr. Mccain signed on to a torture bill that in effect gave Mr. Bush a completely free hand.

A Georgia nurse has sued Dekalb County and a police officer in federal court for being ticketed in March for a profane bumper sticker about President Bush, even though a state law that had banned such slogans on vehicles was ruled unconstitutional — in 1990, the Associated Press says. She also wants a declaration in court that her bumper sticker is constitutionally protected speech under the First Amendment.

Paul Krugman on why this election is important: subpeona power. "Last year The Boston Globe offered an illuminating comparison: when Bill Clinton was president, the House took 140 hours of sworn testimony into whether Mr. Clinton had used the White House Christmas list to identify possible Democratic donors. [This was back when the GOP was so concerned about terrorism, remember.] But in 2004 and 2005, a House committee took only 12 hours of testimony on the abuses at Abu Ghraib."

The Oakland A's fired Ken Macha as their manager today which should sound familiar to anyone who was around this time last year. The A's severed their ties to the manager after the 2005 season and he interviewed for the vacancy in Pittsburgh, before general manager Billy Beane changed his mind and resigned Macha to a three-year deal. The A's won the AL West and advanced to the ALCS before being swept out of the postseason by the Tigers this weekend. And they did it with a patchwork lineup that relied heavily on a comeback season by Frank Thomas, so what's the problem?

Carolina 23, Baltimore 21 - The strangest thing happened on the way to a road win for Carolina - the Ravens found an offense when Steve Mcnair got hurt. Mcnair went down with a first-quarter concussion but Kyle Boller led three scoring drives, all ending on Boller touchdown throws to keep the Ravens in contention all game. He couldn't do quite enough to overcome Jake Delhomme, however. The Panther quarterback threw for 365 yards and two touchdowns, the second one coming on a 72-yard hook-up with Steve Smith that came one play after the Ravens had drawn within two points on a Boller-to-mark Clayton score.

the party apparatus. Rare is the conservative Republican Congressional leader who does not have a gay staffer wielding clout in a major position. Second, any inference that gay Republicans on the Hill conspired to cover up Mr. Foley ’ s behavior is preposterous. Mr. Fordham, the gay former Foley aide who spent Thursday testifying under oath about his warnings to Denny Hastert ’ s staff, is to date the closest this sordid mess has to a whistle-blower, however tardy. So far, the slackers in curbing Mr. Foley over the past three years seem more straight than gay, led by the Buffalo Congressman Tom Reynolds, who is now running a guilt-ridden campaign commercial desperately apologizing to voters.

Tennessee 25, Washington 22 - The Bengal loss was bad but this one was much, much worse for the Redskins. It's bad enough to give a team like the Titans a first win on the road but with the Giants, Cowboys and Eagles in the same division it's self-destructive to the extreme. Travis Henry looked unstoppable en route to 178 yards and a touchdown, taking pressure off of Vince Young and eating up time that the Titans used to close out Washington. The Redskins need to rattle off four or five straight wins to avoid the curtain dropping on their season and, if his expression is any guide, Joe Gibbs's comeback.

Throw in a crafty reverse to Michael Jennings and Big Blue racked up an impressive 259 yards on the ground against a team more familiar with being the better running team. Barber and Jacobs helped maked up for a shaky Eli Manning (17-for-30, 180 yards and a pair of touchdowns to match a pair of picks). Each of Eli's touchdown tosses were to Jeremy Shockey, who finally put his money where his mouth's been with a performance that exploited Atlanta's need to try and stop the run. As iffy as Eli was, he must be given credit for leading three touchdown drives, stuffing the ball in the end zone after settling for too many field goals last week.
