In Connecticuts U.S. Senate race, a new Quinnipiac poll shows Sen. Joe Lieberman (I) opening a massive lead on challenger Ned Lamont (D). Lieberman now holds a 52% to 35% advantage in his re-election race. Alan Schlesinger (R) gets just 7%. This poll was taken after Mondays three-way debate. While 35% of Connecticut voters watched Mondays candidate debate, another 35% said they heard or read about the debate. Of those who watched the debate or read or heard about it, only 3% say they changed their mind about whom they would vote for as a result of the debate.

Also today, the California GOP announced that it is demanding the withdrawal of their Congressional candidate Tan D. Cardinals rotation vs. rest. It would have been simple if the Cardinals had taken care of the Mets in six games. Jeff Suppan would have been ready for Game 1, Jeff Weaver would have been on regular rest for Game 2 (and, possibly, Game 6) and Chris Carpenter for Game 3 (and, if needed, Game 7). But going seven games against the Mets changed that. Starting Anthony Reyes in Game 1 means going with a rookie who hasn't had the success of the...

JENNIFER Aniston went on "Oprah" to tell the world she and Vince Vaughn are still together. We apologize to Vaughn for reporting on Oct. 11 that the "The Wedding Crashers" star had been photographed "making out" with a "mystery blonde" at a party in London. The item, first reported in the London Sun, was incorrect. We 're advised Vaughn was merely greeting a friend at the event and not kissing her "passionately." Any suggestion that the actor was being unfaithful to Aniston is totally false.

We are talking about Master Chief. Halo is worth the risk. Peter Jackson on it is worth the risk. There is said to be a concern about the director Neill Blomkamp, a 27 year old first timer for a feature director, but that may be able to be worked out. A Machiavellian corporate approach could easily work something out. There is a concern that the film budget of $145 million before a discount for New Zealand could balloon to $200 Million. That has supposedly been denied, but any movie producer knows that budgets can balloon.

But it was the Cardinals in the ninth inning who came back to shut the mouths of New York Mets fans. At the top of the inning, still tied 1-1, Cards catcher Yadier Molina, not considered a power hitter on the staff, swung at the first pitch to him -- and sent it over the head of the same outfielder who made the spectacular catch for a 3-1 Cards lead homer. That home-run ranks up there for Cards fans with the Ozzie Smith homer and the Mcgwire 62. It too will not be forgotten.

- Why leave Aaron Heilman in the game and Billy Wagner in the bullpen in the ninth, when Yadier Molina hit the two-run shot that gave the Cardinals the lead? Mike Lupica doesn't question the decision and admires Heilman's resolve in sitting through all the questions that, perhaps unfairly, were directed at him. Like Lupica, Shea Nation shifts the questions to the Mets offense. In any case, Mets fans aren't showing a lot of faith in Wagner -- a Newsday online vote asking who deserves blame for the loss finds the reliever in second place behind "Nobody."

Give me the Tigers in six. I think the Cardinals will battle, but this Tiger team is a force right now. And prepare thine ears to be regaled endlessly with stories from Tim Mccarver on what it was really like to be in the 1968 World Series, and also expect to see his game three home run roughly 24 times (probably only once, if you want to be serious). Brandon Inge said he gets frustrated watching baseball on TV because of the commentators, which made me feel better because I thought maybe it was just us fans that hated these schmucks. Of course Inge could've meant something entirely different, but I want to imagine Inge watching TV and being like, "GOD SHUT UP JOE BUCK, THAT IS SO STUPID."

When President Bush said that there might be some parallels between the Iraq and Vietnam wars, you would think he had declared unilateral surrender, judging from the press reaction. He mildly agreed with Thomas Friedman ’ s assertion that the recent uptick in violence in Iraq (during Ramadan, note) could be the “ jihadist equivalent of the Tet offensive, ” and the frenzy began. It may have been a first for the President, but the Tet analogy is nothing new. Arthur Schlesinger touted Tet with reference to Fallujah in 2004. I first started debunking Tet comparisons back in 2003, during an earlier spate of Ramdan-related violence. For all the Tet talk, we have yet to see anything remotely like it.

Mickey Lolich, the mad motorcyclist of Detroit, had just outpitched Bob Gibson to win the World Series for the Tigers, and now he stood on a stool inside his locker stall and alternately poured champagne over his head and into his mouth (more of it into his mouth, it seemed). "You all thought'I was an improbable hero, but I came sneaking through," said Lolich, ducking to avoid a bubbly spray that Denny Mclain was squirting in all directions. The Cardinals turn to Jeff Suppan, who delivered the best performance on the mound thus far in the series, three-hitting the Mets over eight shutout innings in Game 3. However, he'll be relying on his team-mates to get their clutch hitting boots back on - they 're less than. 200 (9-for-46) in this series. Suppan does have prior experience on the big stage, winning Game 7 of the 2004 NLCS, in which he beat Roger Clemens. It promises to be a fascinating match-up: is it worth mentioning that Shawn Green is batting. 345 this post-season? That's second only to Carlos Delgado among Mets with more than 15 plate-appearances. But it seems the honeymoon is over in the Big Apple: especially if they lose tonight.

The St Louis Cardinals will face the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. The Cardinals advance thanks to a 3-1 win over the Mets in Game 7 of the NLCS, a magnificent game that featured brilliant pitching, a ninth-inning home run and truly one of the greatest catches in a huge spot that you'll ever see. Including the post-season, the Cards and the Mets had combined to play 342 games this season. For the last four batters the Mets sent to the plate last night, either team could have won the game on every pitch. And the difference between winning and losing was going home heartbroken and going to the World Series.
