Britney Spears filed a petition for divorce from husband Kevin Federline Tuesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, citing "irreconcilable differences," TMZ reports. In her petition, Spears asks for both legal and physical custody of the couple's two children, one-year old Sean Preston and two-month-old Jayden James, with Federline getting visitation rights. Sources tell TMZ that the couple, who married in September 2004, has an iron-clad prenup, and that Spears is waiving her right to spousal support ....

The show trial of Saddam Hussein was drawn out until two days before the midterm US elections. The death sentence imposed on the former Iraqi president may help the deluded band of Bush supporters find victory in the defeat that Bush has met in Iraq and motivate them to support the beleaguered Republicans on November 7.

No doubt you ’ ve been following the recent events concerning Ted Haggard. After being publicly accused of engaging in illegal drug use and sexual immorality for three years, and acknowledging at least part of it to be true, he was dismissed as pastor of 14,000 member New Life Church in Colorado Springs, the church he founded twenty-one years ago. He also resigned as head of the National Association of Evangelicals, said to represent some 30 million Christians. If you haven ’ t seen it, his statement of confession, read to his church this past Sunday, can be found here.

Can you imagine it? I'm outraged. Stem cell research is great science and I'm all for it IF the scientists would stick with the program and go after FRESH stem cells from adult bone marrow, umbilical cords and placentas. There is so much of that around that scientist would have to literally dig out from under it if they'd just apply for it. I don't know a woman/mother or family that would begrudge giving up an umbilical cord or a placenta to help someone get well. Why do scientists think in the bizzare rather than the logical???

Three months ago, after Ned Lamont won the Democratic primary for U.S. Senator in CT, political analysts, pollsters and the like hypothesized that Joe Lieberman's tenure as Senator of CT ran out. Well - tomorrow may prove them wrong. A recent poll found Joe Lieberman led Lamont by 12 percentage points in a statewide poll.

and "The Birdcage" on Bravo). Here in Florida it looks to be a pretty quiet night; the only interesting races will be the governor's contest where Republican Charlie Crist, snubber of the president, is up against Democrat Jim Davis, and 14-term Congressman Clay Shaw is in a very tight race against Ron Klein. The pundits say that if Shaw loses, it would be a really big deal and a signal of the Republicans'problems nationwide. There's also the race to replace Rep. Mark Foley, who resigned to spend more time with his rehab counselor and chatroom buddies. Joe Negron's name won't appear on the ballot in the race against Tim Mahoney, but there will be signs at the polling places saying, in essence, vote for Foley to get Negron. Got that?

And what could possibly be more injurious and insulting to our men and women in Iraq than to send them off to war and then go out and finance the very people they 're fighting against with our gluttonous consumption of oil? Sure, George Bush told us we 're addicted to oil, but he has not done one single significant thing -- demanded higher mileage standards from Detroit, imposed a gasoline tax or even used the bully pulpit of the White House to drive conservation -- to end that addiction. So we continue to finance the U.S. military with our tax dollars, while we finance Iran, Syria, Wahhabi mosques and Al Qaeda madrassas with our energy purchases.

Jim Talent has one against Claire Mccaskill in which Mccaskill ’ s pledge to audit nursing homes suspected of improper conduct was seen as an utter failure. According to Mr. Talent ’ s camp, Mccaskill married an owner of several “ bad ” nursing homes, and then proceeded to only audit 3 in the entire state. I saw another from the Republican campaign committee that said … Mccaskill only audited 3 nursing homes. I ’ m fairly certain there ’ s a third ad that uses the same strategy. Everyone says that Karl Rove is a genius. Yeah, right. So are cigarette companies. They get you to buy cigarettes even though we know they cause cancer. That is the kind of genius Karl Rove is. He is not a man who has designed a strategy to reunite our country around an agenda of renewal for the 21st century ..... to bring out the best in us. His "genius" is taking some irrelevant joke by John Kerry and twisting it to bring out the worst in us, so you will ignore the mess that the Bush team has brought upon this country.

When they started playing the sound portion of several major advertisements, it was a bit of a shock to realize that some of the Republican-oriented ads from the mid-west managed to make the scabrous Kerry Healey publicity look almost jolly. The point did get made, however, that majorly negative ads can turn around and bite the candidate on the ass. The now infamous "garage ad" by Healey's campaign, in which Deval Patrick was [fraudulently] identified with a notorious rapist, was identified as the turning point in the campaign, after which Healey ’ s fortunes just sank lower and lower.

I voted for Jodi Rell, Alan Schlesinger, Joe Courtney and everyone else I said I'd vote for. I did take a look for Joe Lieberman's name, just to see how hard it was to find it. Incredibly, on the machine I was using, the chunky blue lever partially blocked his name from my perspective. If I had been a few inches taller, I might not have seen it at all. His position is really, really terrible. I still think that most of his voters will find him, but it's going to be a challenge.

Other districts are more interesting. My old congresswoman Nancy Johnson, another moderate Republican, is likely to lose to the excellent Chris Murphy. I have nothing against Nancy personally. As Republicans go, she is as good as they come. But everyone I speak to is just plain tired of Republicans and they know that a vote for Nancy, however nice she is, is a vote for Bush. The same dynamic is happening in the wealthy southern part of the state, where the likeable Republican Chris Shays is likely to lose his seat to Diane Farrell. Of the three moderate Republicans under siege in this state, I think only Rob Simmons will survive by the skin of his teeth.

Musically, Carrie Underwood's Before He Cheats (another rather vandalistic tune) was impressive, as were Brad Paisley's guitar solo in She's Everything, Vince Gill's duet with Sheryl Crow on What You Give Away, Alan Jackson's vocal on Like Red on a Rose and Little Big Town's harmonious Bones.

The Prestige only helps solidify his standing as one of the landmark directors of his generation. Told in a narrative that jumps between various points along its time line, playing out like a magic act itself, the story is that of two magicians on the rise in their careers. The first -- played by Christian Bale -- is an expert in understanding the fundamentals of any trick, but lacks showmanship. The second -- played by Hugh Jackman -- is a master showman who is more entertaining than technical.

Anyway, Hyde is 82 now and has decided that it is time to retire (don't let the door hit you on the way out, Henry). The race is between Peter Roskam (R) and Tammy Duckworth (D). Roskam has been in the state senate for a while. This is Duckworth's first venture into politics. The fact that the race is a toss-up shows just how fed up people are with the incompetence of Republican leadership. So... this is it. My predictions for New York: HRC for US Senate; Elliot Spitzer for Governor; Andrew Cuomo for Attorney General; and Alan Hevesi for Comptroller. The first three required great agonizing, but I am confident that this is how it will play out in the end. Seriously, I guess the only nail biter in the governor race will be to see if the Working Families Party will get enough votes (Spitzer is also their candidate) to remain where they are on the ballot.

The new James Bond comes out this month, and there is a new James Bond. The actor replacing Pierce Brosman is named Daniel Craig. "The Democrats will be heading for an epic House sweep, if, by 8 p.m., they have won three Gop-held Indiana seats, at least one in Kentucky, one in New Hampshire, one in Virginia (if Phil Kellam knocks off Thelma Drake in the 2nd District) and a minimum of three in Ohio. That new math would give the Democrats nine new House seats -- leaving them just six pickups around the country short of making Nancy Pelosi speaker. Conversely, if by 8 p.m. Eastern, the Republicans have held their losses to, say, three seats, then the Democrats will once again be reeling from the hidden power of the GOP's turnout operation."

For those of you that missed the Country Music Awards last night in Nashville, here's a little taste of what happened when Carrie Underwood took the Best Female Vocalist Award right out from under Faith Hill's nose. Evidently, Faith thought she had it in the bag. Shame... because I've always liked her as a person. Her statement, listed below, was issued early this morning. I find it odd that there weren't any apologies to speak of. The idea that I would act disrespectful towards a fellow musician is unimaginable to me. For this to become a focus of attention given the talent gathered is utterly ridiculous. Carrie is a talented and deserving Female Vocalist of the Year. Have a little faith, Faith. There's always next year.
