A bright spot was that moderate Democrat running as an independent Jow Lieberman regained his seat after losing his party primary (with a lot of Republican help and good wishes). And we held the governorships of California, Texas, and Florida, though we lost New York and Ohio, as well Maryland and Massachusetts. Sadly, the South Dakota abortion ban failed, though English was recognized as the official language of Arizona. Slim comfort!

In Montana, we are waiting on the results from Meagher County. As it stands, Democratic challenger Jon Tester is just over 1700 votes ahead. Meagher is a traditional rural Republican county which went 72% for Bush in ‘ 04. However, it is sparsely populated and normally only around a thousand of its residents turn out to vote. In theory, scandal-plagued Republican incumbent Conrad Burns could still turn it round, but in practice there just won ’ t be enough votes there unless something very suspicious happens.

This has been the coy phrase Democrats have used throughout the campaign without being particularly specific about what it means exactly. Now that we have the woman who never misses a Gay Pride parade in Gay Francisco as Speaker of the House, we'll probably find out. If the senate goes Democrat as well and we 're looking at Senate Majority Leader Dirty Harry Reid, we 're in worse shape.

This clip is from the Country Music Awards that took place on Monday night and shows the award for Female Vocalist of the Year. Faith Hill throws her hands up in the arm as if she had won and then when it clicks that her name was not called, she screams “ WHAT! ” To me this clip is hysterical because it shows how unprofessional and immature superstars get be. My friend told me that she tried to cover it up by saying that she was doing it as a joke, but it doesn ’ t seem like it was that way to me at all. She looked legitamitly upset and furious. She looked like she was ready to walk up also. I just wish that ABC had shown her reaction after Carrie Underwood won the award. I bet it was priceless.

While there are still races too close to call, here in my neck of PA, we can claim victory. Rick Santorum, out! Curt Weldon, out! Yahoo! Just as an indication of how bit a deal this was, in my precinct, which normally votes 2 to 1 Republican, went democratic in every race. We had about a 75% turnout, not as big as 2004, but still very good. I stayed up as long as I could to watch returns. Mr. Geeky stayed up longer than me and came up to tell me about the Webb/Allen race. I'd love to take the senate, too, but I think that's still a long shot. Man, do I feel better, though.

* The biggest victory in losing yesterday? The defeat of liberal Sen. Lincoln Chafee (ACU Lifetime Rating: 37) in Rhode Island. Not only was the Senate ’ s most liberal Republican purged from the ranks, but the Republican Party ’ s establishment got a kick right in the shorts, as well. Recall that the NRSC, the RNC and the White House pulled out all the stops to defeat Chafee ’ s conservative challenger in the GOP primary just two months ago, saying the party had to sacrifice principle for electoral victory. As it turned out, they got neither. Conservative Republican voters in Rhode Island got their revenge.

CNN was okay with its coverage, although the commentators could've been better. (J.C. Watts? Bennett? Carville? Begala? Snore.) MSNBC's coverage seemed to be the funnest (from what I've read), apparently full of infighting between Joe Scarborough and Chris Matthews, and Matthews constantly trying to upstage and outshine Keith Olbermann (and failing miserably). MSNBC had the live election coverage streaming live from their website, but it was extremely choppy last night (it's working fine for me this afternoon).

The most important House race here is WA-08 in which Darcy Burner challenged Dave Reichert. The latter's been ahead all night by 4% but the media's still calling it "too close to call" with 40% of the vote counted. Hang in there Darcy! Wish I could've voted for you.

I read this rumor a little less than a week ago, and didn't think much of it because we all know that Marcus wants to play with big brother Brian. Today, the Padres made a move trading 2B Josh Barfield to the Cleveland Indians for 3B prospect Kevin Kouzmanoff and Triple A pitcher Andrew Brown. A very interesting and very unsuspecting trade. The rumor from earlier was Giles possibly to San Deigo but Scott Linebrink would almost have to be involved. Giles would then have to make a move to 3B. Now that Barfield has been traded, 2B is available. Obviously this makes a Giles deal an even more reality.

Joe Courtney currently leads Rob Simmons in the 2nd Congressional District by 170 votes -- less than 0.1 percent of the more than 242,000 votes cast, probably triggering an automatic recount.

The University of North Carolina has reached an agreement with Butch Davis for him to become its next football coach, two sources close to the search process said this afternoon. One of the sources said that a contract has been signed. Both sources indicated that school officials are trying to decide when to announce the hiring and introduce Davis as the coach. UNC will play Georgia Tech in its homecoming game Saturday at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill. (Winston-salem Journal)

And in other shocking news, Janet Napolitano has turned back a laughable challenge from Len Munsil, who will have to go back and crawl into his hole at the Center of Arizona Policy, where he can continue obsessing over the fact that most couples are having better and more frequent sex than he is. Or some even.

To CREW -- Melanie Sloan and Naomi Seligman Steiner - - you may not hear so much about these ladies, but they are killers! Brilliant, tough and fearless. They have taken on the IRS, Tom Delay, Bob Ney, John Doolittle and a corrupt Congress and stood up for Joe and Valerie Wilson in their relentless pursuit of integrity, accountability and simple things like following the laws. Working with a small staff in D.C., they have done so much in such a short time.

I voted a straight Democrat/Working Families Party ticket yesterday. I'm happy to say that Elliot Spitzer is New York's Governor-elect, which is a very welcome change. Alan Hevesi was re-elected as Comptroller, Andrew Cuomo as Attorney General and Hilary Clinton was re-elected to the U.S. Senate. The fate of Alan Hevesi is in the hands of Elliot Spitzer and Andrew Cuomo. After all, he was re-elected fair and square by the voters-he should stay in office, maybe face censure-but not impeachment. The voters spoke when they went to the polls, they forgave Hevesi of his transgressions and feel he's the best man for the job.

Other long shots could also fall to the Republicans if things go for them as they did for the Democrats in this cycle. In New Jersey Frank Lautenberg is extremely unpopular and would most likely face Tom Kean Jr., who ran a close race this year against Robert Menendez. Also, in Michigan and in Delaware Carl Levin and Joe Biden could retire opening those races up more for a GOP challenge.

It's official (sort of?). The Associated Press is reporting that the Montana race has been called, and Jon Tester (D) is the winner over Conrad Burns (R)! That means that at the very least, we 're looking at a 50-50 split in the Senate. Even then, the Democrats would only be denied a 51 - 49 majority if a possible Virginia recount goes against Webb - who is the leader at the moment. This could get very, very interesting. By the way, today rocks.

The US Supreme Court heard oral arguments Wednesday in the consolidated cases of Gonzales v. Carhart and Gonzales v. Planned Parenthood which challenge the constitutionality of the federal prohibition of partial-birth abortions. Proponents of the Partial-birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003 argue that the legislation prohibits only a small percentage of abortions and does not infringe the right to an abortion. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg asked several questions suggesting a concern over the reach of the law, but Solicitor General Paul Clement denied the possibility of infringing the right to an abortion, characterizing the methods prohibited under the act as "rarely-used" and "gruesome." Perhaps the starkest difference between the Republican results and the Second Amendment results were in Ohio. There, pro-gun Democrats picked up two formerly Republican open seats in the House. Three endangered pro-gun Republican Congresspersons defeated anti-gun Democratic challengers. Anti-gun retiring Republican Governor Bob Taft was replaced by strongly pro-gun Democrat Ted Strickland, while anti-gun Republican Attorney General Betty Montgomery was defeated by pro-gun Democrat Mark Dann. The Buckeye Firearms Association reports that in the Ohio House, "the pro-gun majority is firmly in place", and the state Senate has improved significantly. Prospects look good for progressive legislation in Ohio, starting with statewide preemption of local gun bans.

As I write Harold Ford, Jr. has conceded the Tennessee Senate race to Republican Bob Corker. The current tally has him losing by just 49,000 votes out of 1.8 million cast. He'll be a Senator someday -- and/or something higher. With a campaign that classy and a defeat that narrow he's well set to take the other Tennessee Senate seat or find himself tapped for other national positions. He's young (36), he waged a brilliant campaign, and he came soclose (so much for those late polls showing Corker trouncing him) that there's no way to write him off and no telling what's in store for him.

The bill was passed without any amendment despite objections from Opposition members Senator Anthony Johnson the Leader of Opposition Business; and Senator Dorothy Lightbourne that the provision would create hardships for very small businesses.

Incumbent Republican Senator Conrad Burns of Montana has apparently lost his bid for re-election. In Virginia, Democratic candidate Jim Webb has claimed victory, but Sen. With the pick up in Montana, the Democrats now have 50 Senators in the new Congress; if Webb holds on in Virginia, the Democrats will have 51 - for a majority in the Senate.

In the sense that I believe electronic voting systems are demonstrably manipulatable (irrespective of whether they were manipulated), I guess I ’ m a conspiracy theorist. That is, I believe they make a conspiracy possible. To be quite honest, with the number of documented problems with voting yesterday, I wouldn ’ t be so quick to assert that nothing went wrong, even in the wake of electoral victories — which truly aren ’ t “ compelling evidence ” that fraud isn ’ t possible. If that suggests a refusal to re-evaulate my beliefs, well, so be it — but when even Ken Mehlman and Bob Novak are asking for paper ballots, I don ’ t think it ’ s totally ludicrous to be a bit cynical.

The leader of the “ under-estimate ” crowd is the idiotic and disgraced former House Majority Leader Tom Delay, who with a straight face told MSNBC last night that a Democratic victory in the House would make them nothing more than a “ lame-duck majority; ” whatever that means, it is infinitely better than being a minority which is what hopefully faces his party for the foreseeable future. I have also seen lots of bloggers, liberal ones especially, downplay the meaning of the election as having been limited to just a few corrupt officials, say it ’ s a “ small step forward, ” it wasn ’ t a landslide, and so on.
