We are informed today that North Korea has either "agreed to end its pursuit of nuclear weapons" or "shut down its main nuclear reactor and eventually dismantle its atomic weapons program" or "take steps towards nuclear disarmament" or most accurately "agreed to a deal to begin to close down its nuclear program in exchange for $300 million in energy and financial aid".

Scooter Libby's defense attorney Theodore Wells Jr. dropped a bombshell in the courtroom a few months ago when he stood up grinning and announced, "We will be calling the Vice President." But when he announced just after lunch today that Vice President Dick Cheney will not testify at trial, Wells, his arms flanked around the podium, struck a more somber and serious tone. "We have released the vice president as a potential witness," he explained to Judge Reggie Walton. Wells had another key annoucement: that Libby would stay off the witness stand as well.

One thing to watch this presidential campaign cycle will be the usage of Youtube by presidential candidates. Youtube allows a presidential candidate yet another avenue to engage potential supporters and voters, and it does so for an incredibly low price tag. All one needs is a digital video camcorder, a computer and an internet connection. The Youtube community doesn't demand the high production values that a TV audience requires.

Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters that U.S. forces "hunting down militant networks that produced roadside bombs had arrested Iranians and that some of the material used in the devices were made in Iran. But he added,'That does not translate that the Iranian government per se, for sure, is directly involved in doing this. What it does say is that things made in Iran are being used in Iraq to kill coalition soldiers.'"

The European Union, haplessness personified, now believes that Iran will be able to develop enough weapons-grade material for a nuclear bomb and there is little that can be done to prevent it. In an admission of the international community ’ s failure to hold back Iran ’ s nuclear ambitions, the document – compiled by the staff of Javier Solana, EU foreign policy chief – says the atomic programme has been delayed only by technical limitations rather than diplomatic pressure. “ Attempts to engage the Iranian administration in a negotiating process have not so far succeeded, ” it states.

Good Morning America these last couple of days has featured Diane Sawyer's interviews with Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He came across as an obvious liar and politician. Then this morning he restated his stand that the Holocaust did not really happen. I was born in 1936 and well remember all of it. How can a sane person with half a brain believe that the Holocaust and World War II is a sham, much less announce his idiocy to the whole world? Is there a clue in the adjective “ sane ”? Or is it just a politician playing to his supporters and using hatred to reinforce his power? Is there something in the water over there that makes sane folks into idiots (see entries for 22 January, 2007, and for 30 July, 2006).

Conoco-phillips has been trading sideways with good size Call and Put trades going both ways. Currently I think COP is going higher even with the recent Crude oil at below $50 BBL. We are going to be hitting a support level soon on crude. They oil companies are going to pay off congress or something. It will happen and oil will go higher again probably to $60. There has already been reported a cold-wave coming through the states and oil prices/bills are going to rise for next quarter. I think COP, as a company, stands out. This Call position might be too early. There is room for error here that COP could go lower, but I think my entry point is on the money.

In a surprise move, not because the Chargers fired Marty Schottenheimer, but because they did it nearly a month after they publicly stated he would be their coach for another season. Apparently after losing both coordinators (OC Cam Cameron to Miami as their new Head Coach & DC Wade Phillips to Dallas as their new Head Coach) and three other assistants, Chargers President & owner Dean Spanos felt it was time to make a change. Anybody who followed this situation knows that there was a brewing conflict between General Manager AJ Smith and Schotteheimer but after an NFL best 14-2 regular season and a public declaration in support of him, its surprising to see it all end here in the middle of February.

Theo, a career-defining performance from Clive Owen, seems to get by with the help of his self-prescribed anti-depressant — an ever-present bottle of scotch — as well as by smoking, frowning and unwinding with an old pal, Jasper, played endearingly and masterfully by the increasingly avuncular Michael Caine, bedecked in his John Lennon Halloween costume. Theo is the classic Bogartian hero, an indifferent bureaucrat hardened by age in a carbonite shell of cynicism, but compelled to action by forces around him greater than himself. He ’ s bestowed with the honorable duty of transporting the first pregnant woman in nearly twenty years to safety, and he ’ ll have to it largely alone since he can ’ t trust the rebels and certainly not the government.

The significance of a black sash is traditionally twofold, as I understand it. First, it means you ’ re a serious student. It ’ s viewed as the beginning of real study, not the ending. Second, it should mean you ’ re able to handle yourself in a self-defense situation. This is less easy to assess for tai chi than for the external martial arts, where people go around punching and kicking each other. Tai chi is concealed power. But the other day a kung fu student at my school playfully attacked me from the back with chops and a kick, and I instinctively turned and caught his foot in midair, using the move Embrace Tiger, Return to Mountain, and pushed him around the room like a wheelbarrow, to his surprise and embarrassment. So I guess that ’ s all right.

Next up, Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who is feeling the political heat after it emerged that he had remarked in a 2002 fundraising letter that the Kyoto Protocol was "a socialist scheme to suck money out of wealth-producing nations." This is interesting, because back in April 2006 60 scientists signed a letter sent to the Canadian Prime Minister in which they stated,

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, the moderate Republican who leads in a number of early polls for president of the United States, began the process of fleshing out his platform yesterday in Silicon Valley. His well received if discursive address to the California Republican Party convention on Saturday started getting honed down into a usable political document in an address to the Churchill Club at the Hyatt Regency in Santa Clara.

Although Microsoft is not divulging any details about Vienna, hints about the new operating system were dropped at the release of Windows Vista. In this event, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer felt that as the entertainment and information technologies evolve together customers are going for systems that combine these two. If a computer needs to support sophisticated forms of digital entertainment, its operating system should have capabilities that go well beyond Windows Vista. Microsoft is also aware of the fact that Vista is somewhat old wine in a new bottle. Vista still uses the same basic graphical user interface, which is in existence from the time Microsoft introduced Windows operating systems.

In other NFL news, the New York Giants waived three starters today, including offensive tackle Luke Petitgout, and linebackers Carlos Emmons and Lavar Arrington. All three were knocked out of action by injuries last season, and releasing them now supposedly allows the Giants to retain free agent center Shaun O ’ Hara, as well as be more of a player in the free agent market. The most shocking release of the three is Arrington, who was starting to recapture some of the promise he had shown in his early career, and was only being paid $900,000 base salary. However, considering that the Giants will most likely be cleaning house after the coming season (start packing now, Coach Tom), they might as well get a jump on things, too.

How is it going? Daryl here with some trade advice needs. It ’ s a keeper league with 20-man rosters. I have been offered Ben Gordon for Danny Granger. My small guys are Stephon Marbury, Jameer Nelson, Delonte West, Luke Ridnour and Randy Foye. And my PG/SG are Joe Johnson, Monta Ellis, Iggy, Luol Deng and Trevor Ariza. I was wondering if I need to make the trade to help my PG/SG category. I really like Granger and his across the board numbers, and I always hear big for small is not a good trade. I do have the No. 1 pick in our rookie draft this year so plan on taking Kevin Durant or Greg Oden and really shoring up my bigs category.

Denise Richards can ’ t stop breaking things up. First it was Richie Sambora ’ s marriage to Heather Locklear. Now she threatens to break up Bon Jovi. The press attention she attracts and her distracting effect on Richie Sambora has been putting tremendous pressure on the band. Jon Bon Jovi finds her to be quite annoying. I ’ m sure Heather would concur.

Chicago and Indianapolis are two football teams that share an enormous amount of the same characteristics - so similar that sports analysts were virtually split in their decisions regarding which team would be the prognosticated Super Bowl XLI champions. Both teams boasted impressive regular season records (13-3, 12-4), were head coached by African Americans (Lovie Smith, Tony Dungy), and were both branded one-side teams - the Colts were an offensive powerhouse with poor defense and the Bears were a defensive/special teams powerhouse with poor offense. Yet through all the comparing and contrasting leading up to the big game, there was one thing that remained certain: Peyton Manning
