The new Daniel Pearl based movie, A Mighty Heart, will probably be a success due to its subject matter and lead actress — Angelina Jolie. Ever since the announcement of Angelina Jolie ’ s appearance as Mariane Pearl — Daniel Pearl ’ s wife — there has been flack from black activists and movie goers alone who are miffed at her playing the role of a black woman. The upset stems from the fact that there are so many black actresses waiting for their opportunity on screen, especially a noteworthy one in a powerhouse film, and the glass ceiling is too hard to break. Usually black female roles are hard to come by, and normally they are filled by the same people over and over, but it ’ s rare that you see them handed over to someone of another race.

While the Salt Institute has always been quietly aware of its unique influence with policy wonks and lawmakers, we could not quite believe the speed with which our blog was able to galvanize the machinery of government into action. On June 12, only two working days after our Peace Chlor article, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, urged all operators of water and waste treatment plants to secure chlorine supplies from terrorists, even though at present they are not required to do so. The July 13 Newsday account indicates that an estimated 3,000 drinking-water and wastewater treatment plants are listed in EPA documents as holding in excess of 2,500 pounds of chlorine gas, according to the Center for American Progress.

A woman who ripped off her ex-boyfriend's testicle with her bare hands has been sent to prison. Amanda Monti, 24, flew into a rage when Geoffrey Jones, 37, rejected her advances at the end of a house party, Liverpool Crown Court heard. She pulled off his left testicle and tried to swallow it, before spitting it out. A friend handed it back to Mr Jones saying: "That's yours."

Britain's definitely got talent in 6 year old Connie Talbot. She wins over ever cynical Simon Cowell and brings female judge Amanda Holden (and me!) to tears with her rendition her of Judy Garland's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".

There is an excellent article in The Times by Anthony Julius and Alan Dershowitz on the proposed boycott of Israeli universities. (It is worth noting that there is little support for this boycott and much opposition from academics.)

- Also during Live Aid Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones regrouped as the remaining members of Led Zeppelin (although they didn ’ t come out as LZ). Anyway, so apparently Phil Collins asked Robert Plant to drum for them (because when I think of Led Zeppelin, I think Phil Collins) after John Bonham had already died back in 1980. Interestingly enough, their performance wasn ’ t included on the DVD because they didn ’ t like the quality of it.

"The FBI's comprehensive audit of National Security Letter use across all field offices has confirmed the inspector general's findings that we had inadequate internal controls for use of an invaluable investigative tool," FBI General Counsel Valerie E. Caproni said. "Our internal audit examined a much larger sample than the inspector general's report last March, but we found similar percentages of Nsls that had errors."

David Brody of CBN asks, and answers, a disturbing question: “ Do you care if the President of the United States attends Church? My bet is the majority of Americans would say yes. ” Not only do they care if he attends, but some are now keeping score as to how often. Brody links to an article at Worldnetdaily which questions whether Fred Thompson has attended church enough – with no discussion of whether he has ever played a priest, minister, rabbi, or even a character attending church, on television. From Worldnetdaily (and indirectly found through Andrew Sullivan):

At a G8 press conference, French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrived a bit late, out of breath, and “ giddy. ” It was a Belgian journalist who joked “ apparently [Mr. Sarkozy] had more than just water to drink ”. A spokesman for President Sarkozy would not deign to comment on the video, saying “ it is not common practice at the Elysée to comment on bad taste jokes. ” Zut alors!

Last night I found myself at the Arclight for the first time in a while watching "Mr. Brooks" with Scott. I have to admit that the movie looked moderately interesting when I saw the previews and I read a lot of chatter regarding Kevin Costner appearing on the screen (in regard to his movie career and his role). It was also interesting to go out on a weeknight -- getting home at 11? Insane! In any case, twelve hours later, I think that the movie was time well spent.

In his statement, Mr Jones said she grabbed his genitals and "pulled hard". He added: "That caused my underpants to come off and I found I was completely naked and in excruciating pain". The court heard that a friend saw Monti put Mr Jones's testicle into her mouth and try to swallow it. She choked and spat it back into her hand before the friend grabbed it and gave it back to Mr Jones. Doctors were unable to re-attach the organ.

The border patrol agents were presumed guilty of an unlawful shooting because they neglected to fill out the proper paperwork. For busting a cap in the butt of a drug courier crossing the border illegally -- who was so mortally wounded that he proceeded to scamper back to Mexico -- they were supposed to spend five hours filling out paperwork. This is what the Bush administration means when it talks about a "cover-up." As U.S. prosecutor Debra Kanof said, "You have to report any discharge of a firearm."
