NR's editorial begins: "No presidential aide in the modern era has had as wide-ranging a portfolio as Karl Rove. He was the president ’ s top political adviser, as well as his top domestic policymaker. Some of the opprobrium he has received from the Left is the result of just this combination: Imagine what conservatives would have said if James Carville had moved into the Clinton White House in 1993 and run a lot of the show."

This past Ames Iowa Straw Poll really was a wild ride. Mitt Romney was able to take away a relatively small amount of votes seeing as how Rudy Giuliani, John Mccain, and Fred Thompson were not there. Ron Paul took 5th place and all of his whiny supporters hissed and booed and the baby himself wanted paper ballots as though that meant anything. Mike Huckabee flung to second somehow. Sam Brownback below him, and Tancredo managed below him. Duncan Hunter was largely stale, but he has not withdrawn yet unlike T. Thompson. The only thing large about John Cox was his big balloon, which probably attracted him his only votes at point three percent. I am sorry Daniel Gilbert did not surpass John Mccain. It could have been possible, with Mccain rock bottom.

Britney Spears ’ former bodyguard/manny Daimon Shippen was served two subpoenas by Kevin Federline ’ s lawyer last night to testify in their ongoing custody case. If you don ’ t remember, Daimon is the guy who caught Sean Preston when Britney Spears tripped and almost dropped him. So yeah, I doubt he ’ ll have anything good to say about Britney ’ s parenting skills. He ’ ll take the stand and try to make Britney look good, but that ’ s impossible so he ’ ll just start babbling randomly instead. “ She, uh, she never stabbed her kids. Definitely never stabbed them. And, uh, she never — no wait, she did that one. She, uh, she used one as a soccer ball once. Shit! No, wait. Can I start over? ”

A few other stories also vied for attention last week as well. The Minneapolis Bridge collapse continued to be a running story for the second week (6%), as rescue efforts for victims ’ bodies continued and more information was uncovered about potential structural faults in the design of the bridge. That made it the third-biggest story of the week. Events on the ground in Iraq had a relatively quiet week (5% of the newshole). The economy and falling stock prices each filled 3% of the newshole, which means that together they would have only ranked fourth. The achievement and controversy surrounding San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds breaking Hank Aaron ’ s home run record also filled 3%.

Yes. The problem with the death penalty in this country is we don ’ t have enough distant federal bureaucrats abdicating it. Really, it ’ s a good idea for powers of review that have previously rested with individual judges handling the cases to be handed over to political appointees making blanket declarations. Because God knows if there ’ s one thing that the last few years have taught us, it ’ s that we ’ re just not giving enough power over the life and death of American citizens to Alberto Gonzales. Has there been a single agency in the past 25 years that ’ s proven more competent and ethically-rigorous than the Attorney General ’ s office?

Sunday was a beautiful warm, lazy day. We worked outside assembling a table we bought for our new terrace three years ago and then wandered off to look at a clearance sale of oriental rugs. We do like them so. Then we heard an item of news on the radio about shooting stars – the Perseid meteor shower in fact, so, as the other half was watching the football, I went out on to the new terrace. Rapidly I decided that I could not take the neck ache, so dragged a sunbed across and luxuriated in the soft night.

It must be nice to live in a culture where it seems like having a dictionary on hand at all times is a must -- but sadly we in the US seem doomed to describe everything as either "awesome" or "sucks" while kids in Asia broaden their vocabularies with devices like Atree's UM10 e-dictionary/PMP. The unit, which sports a sliding flip keyboard much like the HTC Shift, also takes stylus input on its 3-inch screen and can play back media in a wide range of formats, including MP4, WMV9, MP3, WMA and Ogg. The unit also has FM and DMB tuners, a Microsoft Office reader app, and either 2 or 4GB of storage expandable via microsd. No word on price, but unless you 're planning a trip to Korea sometime soon it doesn't really matter. Too bad -- it sucks that we can't get a device this awesome over here.

I suppose even films as generic as “ Rush Hour 3 ” have their upsides. Jackie Chan ’ s brand of improve martial arts action is pretty much the only reason I bothered catching this flick (well, it sure wasn ’ t for Chris Tucker ’ s tired “ angry black man ” brand of comedy) and I left reasonably satisfied with his efforts. Chan ’ s frantic, cartoonish fight sequences are pretty much the only thing that will hold your interest, so all you Chan fans who can brave the horrors of Chris Tucker should enjoy what you see.

Washington DC – August 12, 2007 – By deciding to ante up $38 billion for a hopeless bailout of predatory Wall Street hedge funds and the banks that stand behind them, Federal Reserve Chairman Helicopter Ben Bernanke has placed the bankrupt US dollar on a direct course towards the precipice of hyperinflation. In so doing, he has given new momentum to the backers and controllers of Dick Cheney, who favor an insane flight forward into general war with Iran, deluding themselves that they can thus escape from both military defeat in Iraq and Afghanistan, and from the death agony of the dollar.

Features include a 2.8 "QVGA 260k color LCD display, a 3.2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, and a microsd memory card slot. In addition, you get to surf the Internet at HSDPA speeds and with such a large display, surely you won't need to visit the optometrist anytime soon. Nah, the researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute won't be crowned the first to develop a flexible (or paper-based, for that matter) battery, but their minuscule prototype "is an integrated device, not a combination of pieces" as others typically are. The battery uses "paper infused with an electrolyte and carbon nanotubes that are embedded in the paper," and could eventually be utilized in combination with solar cells or "scaled up and shaped into something like a car door, offering moving electrical storage and power when needed." Currently, however, the wee samples can release just "2.3 - volts, or enough to illuminate a small light," but the idea of using these things to power pacemakers and the like isn't that far fetched.

I know from our list of the Generation's Best Books (as voted by our readers) that a ton of y'all are fans of Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, and I'm sure that just as many of you are wary of the big-screen adaptation of the first novel in the trilogy, The Golden Compass. Unfortunately, the trailer here doesn't really dispel those fears. But, then again, neither does it dash one's hopes, unless you just loathe Nicole Kidman, who actually looks fun here as a villainess. Parts of the trailer look great -- and Sam Elliot and Daniel Craig help immensely -- but, the girl (Dakota Blue Richards) looks miscast and the polar bear looks positively Zemeckian. And why do I get the feeling that all of the religious subtext will be removed?
