Mainly, I just wanted a place to toot Jo Chen's horn (no, not that way - minds out of the gutter, people), regarding her outstanding work on the ongoing issues of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8. I believe I posted a bit on this late last year, but for those who may have been under a pop-culture rock the last 6 months or so, this is the comic book continuation of the TV show canon established by the end of season seven, the storylines of which are being overseen and "executive produced" by creator Joss Whedon. He's even writing many of the issues himself, including the already established five-issue first arc "The Long Way Home".

Cinematical.com is reporting that Larry Wachowski has confirmed the rumors that she is now Lana Wachowski. She will apparently be doing press on this after Speed Racer comes out and Andy will do most of the publicity. I've heard rumors for years that she was a cross dresser but they 're so secretive no one ever knew for sure. But it appears she's not just a TV but transgender. This makes their love of V for Vendetta all the more clear and also it makes me very proud of her for going for it and finally taking the steps to be herself! The other performances were fabulous as well. Emma Thompson was stellar, in a painful role to watch. Dustin Hoffman was Dustin Hoffman. Maggie Gyllenhaal is a pistol, and a fun, endearing character who she invests with humanity. And she looks great too. Queen Latifah ’ s character was a minor part, but one that was entertaining, juicy, and well-acted. The characters also had a nice, well-rounded completeness, with the realistic details I was referring to in my last post.

Through work, I scored sneak preview tickets to see "Shoot Em Up" starring Clive Owen, Monica Bellucci and Paul Giamatti. Whatever your plans were on Saturday, they 're now changed. Go see this. The movie starts. Two minutes into it the guns start. It doesn ’ t end till the last frame. It ’ s rollicking, silly, fun, candy for the brain. There isn ’ t a wasted actor in this. Clive is certified cool. Monica Bellucci reclaims her title as hottest woman on the planet. And the oscar goes to Paul Giamatti for being so unrepentantly vile. There ’ s no real explanation for why Clive is a one man gang. There ’ s guesses and suppositions, but no time wasted in a long drama llama reason why he ’ s how he is.

Even if I like everybody else in a movie or I like the story line, I won't spend my money on a movie with Hanoi Jane Fonda, all those Chavez worshiping actors like Danny Glover or anything with Tim Robbins or Susan Sarandon.

Given the recent SFWA kerfluffle, here ’ s an interesting convergence: Jerry Pournelle waxes on the topic of ebooks, Scribd.com, and income, making some very good points. I don ’ t quite agree with his spin on Burt ’ s activities – I don ’ t think anyone could have gone through that list, read “ gay erotica, ” and thought they were defending Asimov ’ s copyright – but over all, he seems to make some good points. And then Cory Doctorow comes down with a pretty good defense of Creative Commons ebooks. The irony is, the two seem to be largely agreeing with one another.

The musician, Jeffrey Carter Albrecht, 34, a keyboardist with Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians and the Dallas rock band Sorta, was shot in the head after he startled a man and his wife about 4 a.m. by pounding and kicking at their back door, the police said. Mr. Albrecht had just assaulted his girlfriend, who lives next door and had locked him out of her house, the police said.

On Tuesday, charges against Carwin Jones and Theo Shaw were reduced to aggravated second-degree battery and conspiracy. That same reduction was made earlier for Mychal Bell, who was tried and found guilty and could be sentenced to 22 ½ years at a hearing Sept. 20.

Harry Potter: I got to meet James and Oliver Phelps, the actors who play Fred and George Weasley, and Matthew Lewis, who plays Neville Longbottom in the films. No spoilers to mention here, except to say that Lewis is a very healthy sort of thin in real life. They apparently make him wear a fat suit on set to make Neville seem pudgy. Just a bit of gossip for those of you out there who might be interested.

There have been explosions and gunfire at a Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon, one day after troops captured it from Islamist militants. Lebanese soldiers were seen rushing into Nahr al-bared to hunt down a number of Fatah al-islam fighters who survived the offensive on Sunday. Earlier, troops combed the camp's heavily bombed buildings looking for booby traps and unexploded munitions.
