The winner is Ron Paul, both based on my analysis and the actual Ron Paul cheering at the debate, and the loser would really be hard to detect because about everybody got a 2 or 3 in the losses category. The losers really are Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, John Mccain, and Fred Thompson. What is ironic is, despite the fact that they are white, the three veteran debate skippers are descendant of minorities, themselves! Giuliani is Italian, Mccain, is Irish, and Romney is a Mormon. So, while they may think of themselves as these big-shots... they would have had to rely with all of the other minorities in the 1910 era, as well!

News continues uncheerily. Both the British and Australian ambassadors in Burma, and the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown agree with me that if the official death toll is 9, the actual loss of life must be "far greater". On Thursday and Friday, the protestors have started to return the military's violence, which is a slippery slope. As an ordinary human being I can't blame them - I am not sure that I could face down a tank. But it is easy for the governments of other countries to denounce the violence when it's one-sided, and perhaps harder if the protestors are actually fighting the military.

I wondered what was going on until I remembered. The Senate passed the Matthew Shepard Act yesterday on a voice vote after nine Republicans joined in a 60-39 vote to end debate. The Act was attached to the defense authorization bill, which makes a threatened veto at least somewhat problematic (the House passed the bill as a standalone in May). The Bush administration says it just wants to prosecute all violent crimes the same way, but I haven ’ t heard it proposing a repeal of existing federal hate crimes law, which covers race, religion, color, and national origin.

Peter Berg is proving himself to be a gifted director, especially with Friday Night Lights (both the movie and the pilot for the NBC drama). He does a nice job here, and the action is extremely well shot, but he's hindered by a weak script from writer Matthew Michael Carnahan. I felt no sense of dread or terror or suspense at any point, because I didn't give a shit about anyone. Each character is given exactly one personality trait. Chris Cooper has been around a while. Jennifer Garner is pretty. Jamie Foxx has a son. Jason Bateman makes wisecracks. We don't get to know these people at all past that.

I think the Grey's premiere was respectable, they 're being silly and they know it. We'll all wondering why Mark is still there and Addison had to leave and become a poopyhead in the spinoof no one will watch, but anyways .... I watched Grey's from the beginning when it was the dishy and hopefully show following Desperate Housewives, now it's a cynical and confused show leading in ill-fated and unoriginal Big Shots, which was probably pitched as Desparate CEOS. Feast of Love. (2007, 102 minutes, R, romantic comedy, trailer) At first glance, this isn't a movie that would immediately attract me, but I am willing to give most films a shot. Upon slight further inspection, this actually looks pretty good. It is a modern take on A Midsummer's Night Dream as love stirs up trouble. The cast looks good and includes Morgan Freeman, Greg Kinnear, Selma Blair, Radha Mitchell, Jane Alexander, and Alexa Davalos. All of the love combinations entwine into a tapestry. The movie was directed by Robert Benton from a screenplay by Allison Burnett based on a novel by Charles Baxter. The trailer looks good, and Freeman has some of the best lines.

The highly anticipated version 1.1.1 iphone firmware update was finally released yesterday. As expected, installing this firmware renders an unlocked iphone completely unusable, partially bricking the iphone. There are unconfirmed reports that iphones unlocked using the paid iphonesimfree method could be re-activated with the original AT&T SIM card but the unlocked iphones are re-locked. So this firmware update basically makes everything back to square one. The iphone Dev team will have to start everything from scratch: decrypting the 1.1.1 firmware, get write access, activate, enable third-party apps and unlocking.

Okay. With the end of September comes the end of the summer blockbuster sequel and franchise season. It marks the begining of Oscar season. This is when the meat of the film industry gets released. What better way to start the season than with David Cronenberg. His newest film, "Eastern Promises", is the first film that DC has done since one of my favorites of'05 "A History Of Violence". It also marks the second time that he and Viggo Mortenson have worked together. However, the biggest similarity between the two is this one thing. They are both brilliant pieces of art.

The Cardinals had a battery out there that had never played together, Albert Pujols was nursing injuries, and the Natural took the bribes and cashed in his integrity, along with his talent, long ago. Over in Philadelphia the Phils were getting ready to finish up against the Braves with a chance to knot things up before they finish up their season against the Nationals. With rookie Kyle Kendrick on the mound they certainly had a shot, but with John Smoltz ’ s name penciled in for the visitors it became a long shot. But with the big three headlining the leagues most productive offense anything was possible.

Sounds like one of those dull, painful, inspirational/message pieces, but the film's cast includes Emile Hirsch, Marcia Gay Harden, William Hurt, Catherine Keener, Vince Vaughn, and Hal Holbrook; it was directed by Sean Penn; and it's getting pretty excellent reviews, so we can't not recommend it.

In his Tm-canon: Dick will be leading a revamped Titans team combining current young heroes and his own contemporaries. He finds interacting with Movie! Bruce Wayne and Smallville! Clark Kent disconcerting, but he can't not talk to them. Starfire has moved into his apartment and they've quietly started their relationship back up. Game 159 looked to be a fairly uninteresting game going in. The house money/rest everyone line-up was in as six of the regulars got a rest. Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Bobby Abreu, Jorge Posada, Doug Mientkiewicz and Melky Cabrera were not in the line-up. Still, there was two big reasons to watch this game and they were both under the age of 24. Scott Kazmir was and starting and in need of 6 strikeouts to pass Johan Santana as the K leader for the majors. Phil Hughes was looking for a solid start against a good hitting team (Tampa Bay was 5th in the AL in scoring after the ASB -. 276/. 346/. 443/. 788 line for the team) to solidify his role on the postseason roster.

Scott Kazmir was good last night, but Phil Hughes was better. Joba Chamberlain pitched the eighth -- including an emphatic strikout of BJ Upton -- and Jose Veras earned the save as the Yankees won their 92nd game of the year, 3-1. It is looking more and more like the Yanks will face the Indians in the first round of the playoffs. You can throw the Yankees 6-0 record vs the Tribe out of the window -- the Bombers only faced Fausto Carmona once this year, and didn't see C.C. at all. But heck, the American League playoff teams -- "the fantastic four," as Brian Cashman called them the other night -- are all tough. If the Yanks are to be champs, they've got to beat the best,'nuff said.

Last Sunday, the Cowboys made a statement by going into Soldier Field and routing the Bears 34-10. Dallas had their first game with a 300-yard passer (Tony Romo - 329 yards), 100-yard rusher (Marion Barber III - 102 yards), and 100-yard receiver (T.O. - 145 yards) since 1999, and only the third in team history. And, Anthony Henry picked off two passes for the second straight game, and returned one for a game-sealing score, earning himself the NFC Defensive Player of the Week award.

So there is a chance, albeit a slim one, that we will actually witness a hockey game. Except that the Rangers will be without their scoring star, Jaromir Jagr, now sidelined with a hip flexor sustained by pushing himself too hard in practice yesterday. Aside from the absence of Jagr and Avery, as well as Paul Mara not dressing, the Rangers will be icing clost to their full NHL team, with rookie hopefuls Marc Staal, Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, and Nigel Dawes battling it out for the final roster spots. Henrik Lundqvist is expected to go the distance, but Rick Dipietro will not be in net for the strangely costumed bridge and tunnel team.

Watched the UGLY BETTY premiere last night and if it ’ s possible, they ’ ve topped themselves from last year. Resolving all the cliffhangers ingeniously throughout the episode I found myself as usual to be thoroughly entertained … and I can ’ t believe that they killed off Santos.. I wanted to believe that he was alive and so bought into Hilda ’ s fantasy almost up until the very end of the episode although I find it difficult to believe that neither Betty nor Justin wouldn ’ t be grieving … Betty maybe, but Santos was Justin ’ s dad. Judith Light continues to amaze and her Wilhemina smackdown was a pleasant surprise as was the revelation that Amandas parents are swingers. High marks for this episode and it will stay firmly entrenched on my DVR.
