We ate late lunch/early dinner at an Italian place on the way home and retired to the couch to watch Blade Runner (I ’ d never seen it - was it just me or was it sort of slow-paced?) and then I forced us to watch Brokeback Mountain as a tribute to Heath Ledger ’ s untimely and tragic death. Jules hadn ’ t seen it before but knew (or at least thought he knew) how sad it was, and I tried to prepare him, too. About 3/4 of the way through, he turned to me and asked, “ Is there a single character in this movie that doesn ’ t get terribly hurt? ” And I had to answer no. By the end, we were both in torrents and felt pensive for the rest of the evening and into Sunday.

I rushed home from LA to watch Masterpiece Theater's Mansfield Park. I'm eight minutes in, so I can't really tell you how it is other than this one silly fact: It stars Billie Piper as Fanny Price; as she narrates the story of her life and that, of course, reminds me of Billie's last two episodes of Doctor Who. Now to complete my ideal evening, a Blue Moon ale, a tangerine and a blanket.

Sorry Jorge, but I, along with the majority of Americans (and probably Earthans) my age, am a fan of Dane Cook. He's dramatic and exaggerative and hilarious. Last night, Comedy Central premiered A Vicious Circle. Dane Cook was featured. He told a joke about saying "God bless you" to a stranger that turned out to be an Atheist. In the joke, the Atheist went on mock Dane for being a Catholic and believing in an afterlife. In the joke, Dane mocked the Atheist for believing that he would return to the earth and become a tree and then be turned into paper that had the Bible printed on it. Everyone loved it.

There honestly wasn't as much blood as I thought there was going to be. I'm no wuss when it comes to fake blood in films but the way articles were trumping up the gore I was expecting the worse. Really, most of it takes place in a montage. Ah, montage. Anyway, as much as I love musicals, I'm no expert on singing techniques or whatnot, but I thought all the actors sang very well. There wasn't one person where I heard them and went, "Ew. Oh. No. Just, no." Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter had a terrific rapport, Burton regulars who know exactly how to give the audience what they want. I'll be honest, sometimes I couldn't understand what they were saying, their accents so thick and voices mumbled that I'd have to listen a few more times to get all the words.

Good movie. I just watched it this weekend with my wife Neva. In addition to the fact that I think Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman are two of the best actors ever, the movie actually had a good story line. The basic idea is two older men are diagnosed with terminal cancer and create a list of things they want to do before they kick the bucket. Hence, the bucket list. I saw Charlie Wilson's War last week. I liked it a lot - Hanks, Roberts, and Seymour-hoffman were incredibly funny, but I hated the end. I know it's a true story, but come on. It has us trotting along happily, and then hits us in the face with a bummer stick. What is with the inconsistency of films right now? Is it really so hard to put a Vanessa Redgrace voiceover at the beginning of Atonement so it'll be bookended? I know it follows the book, and that kind of ending is okay in books, but not movies. Okay, rant over. I saw Untraceable this weekend. To sum it up: It's a torture movie disguised as a thinking person's torture movie. The acting was good though.

Work remains busy, but also very satisfying. In the midst of some of the usual bureaucratic stuff I have to do, I ’ m doing lots of hands-on creative stuff. Workwise, one of the most memorable occasions for me was covering the death of Heath Ledger. Although history will record his greatest performance as Ennis in Brokeback Mountain, I also thought he was terrific in Candy, which I saw just a few months later. I wonder what other great roles me might have played?

Saturday I did some odds & ends around the house, then swam at the Gator pool. Went directly from there to C ’ s friends ’ house for dinner. We watched C ’ s movie Undercover Brother, then the newest Bond movie Casino Royale. This is different – James Bond is a beginner and has just been promoted to 007 status. He suffers more, too; Sean Connery could land a few well-placed hits and his opponent would be dead. It was all very neat and his dinner jacket never got messed up. This new guy gets into knock-down, drag-out fights before he wins, and he comes away with cuts and bruises and blood all over him. It ’ s more realistic.

Not a great selection of films as the month winds down, but it covers all the bases. Daddy Day Camp is a good choice for the kids, and Invasion has enough thrills and the starpower of Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig to pull a few rents. King of California with Michael Douglas could be the sleeper hit of the week, and Right at Your Door looks like a apocalyptic panic film that should please the Saw and 28 Weeks Later crowds. The Comebacks is another one in the Epic Movie vein, and unless you ’ re really bored, most will skip this one.
