Younger ’ s accusation that Obama would condone amnesty is flatly untrue. Obama ’ s plan for immigration does not provide amnesty. It does, however, comprehensively bring illegals out of the shadows by punishing them with a fine, then putting them at the back of the naturalization line. As far as Younger ’ s assertion that Obama would throw the country into an immediate depression, believe it or not, the failure of the Bush economic policy has sent us even faster to that grim possibility. It is John Mccain that wants to continue those economic policies, not Barack Obama.

Another month and another project in which Judd Apatow is some way involved. This month it ’ s Pineapple Express, starring Seth Rogen and James Franco as a stoner and dealer respectively, on the lam after the former witnesses a murder. The buzz on this has been good and Seth Rogen is flavour of the month but opening on Wednesday to avoid losing business on Friday due to the Olympics has hurt the film a little, giving it a lower weekend total than it might have had. Furthermore, it suffered a much higher Friday/Saturday drop than expected proving the film to be heavily front loaded. Given that the film ’ s budget was just $25M, we ’ re in profit from this weekend out so no one is really worrying.

On the American side, Lebron James and Kobe Bryant pulled off a few gnarly dunks, Dwyane Wade acted like a star player. Chris Bosh outplayed Dwight Howard, who might find himself on the bench before you know it. Jason Kidd was a waste of time, but you knew that before the game. Team USA's performance might not have beat Spain or Germany, but I suspect the Americans were nearly as exhausted as Yao. We'll have a better idea of what this team can do come Thursday against Greece.

As part of this argument, I suggest the possibility of notated music in Anglo-saxon England prior to the 10th century. Since the Durham Cassiodorus was likely read by Alcuin of York who played an important part in the Carolingian liturgical reform, the Durham Cassiodorus neume fragment may be linked to Alcuin and to what Kenneth Levy has called a ‘ Carolingian archetype ’, that is, a now-lost antiphoner with music compiled around 800. In a highly anticipated UFC lightweight fight between Kenny Florian vs Roger Huerta, the lanky 32-year old Florian swept a 3-round decision by scores of 30-27 on all scorecards. Florian used movement and counter strikes to thwart the aggressive Mexican Huerta ’ s rushes. Huerta had some holes in his defense that Florian exposed with left hands from his southpaw stance. I have only watched previews for Tropic Thunder, but I hate this movie already. The brief clips alone are enough to make we want to start being like Davey, and watching indie films, or maybe only movies in other languages. After seeing ‘ David ’ we made it back to the hostel, hung out for a little while, and headed over to a little bar called Friends to watch the Community Shield match between Manchester United and Portsmouth. Manchester United won on penalties, of course, but the fun part of watching the match was being around other football fans watching the match instead of it being just us watching the match at 4 in the morning in our PJ ’ s in Rocklin. After a pint of Guinness, we met a family of Portsmouth fans from England who were here on vacation in Florence, so they bought us a pint of Harp while talking about Las Vegas, what people in Scotland are like, and other random things.

3. Salim Hamdan, former driver for Osama bin Laden, was sentenced on Thursday to 66 months in prison for supporting terrorism. After being found not guilty on a number of other charges, Hamdan could be free in less than 6 months after being granted credit for the five years he has already served as a detainee at Guantanamo Bay. The verdict was the first issued by the military tribunal system established to try prisoners captured by the US government in the war on terror. The Pentagon has already announced that Hamdan may be held as an enemy combatant even after he completes the sentence issued by the military tribunal.

We just went to see Mamma Mia (movie) and LOVED it! It was very entertaining! The only weird thing was seeing Pierce Brosnan singing! Meryl Streep was so great... it's nice to see her perform in a fun role! Also, I loved Julie Walters (who plays Mrs. Weasley in Harry Potter)!! Great physical comedy. This is a must-see for those who enjoy/appreciate music and comedies.

The real reason to watch "the X-files: I want to believe," is simply to see David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprise their famous roles as the believer Fox Mulder and the skeptic Dana Scully respectively. Other than that, what we got here is another serviceable thriller mystery involving a psychic assisting the FBI on a case about kidnapped women, in what turns out to be for some really unnatural reasons. The fans are going to be disappointed at the lack of the TV series'mythological story, and casual fans may feel indifferent about the drama involving the theme on following a belief as opposed to settling with the reasonable logical conclusions. Entertaining enough for what it is, but this is something that could have just been released straight to DVD or made as a TV movie.

The Cardinals got their revenge yesterday with a 12-3 win, in which St Louis pummelled the Cubs ’ ace Carlos Zambrano for nine earned runs in just 4.1 innings. With the Giants trailing 2-1 and LA closer Jonathan Broxton coming into the game, all hope appeared to be lost. Dave Roberts led off the bottom of the 10th by going the other way with a 98 mph fastball and he legged it into a double. Randy Winn then also went the other way for a single to put runners on the corners and nobody out. Roberts scored on a Burriss ground ball. The Giants eventually loaded the bases and Aaron Rowand came to the plate. Rowand went the other way to knock a single into right field and that was all she wrote. It was Rowand ’ s first walk-off hit as a Giant and it couldn ’ t come against a better team.

After catching some rowing events that were probably about as exciting as rowing gets (i.e. not even a little bit), I ’ m ready for a switch over to baseball, as the Phillies get ready to finish up their series with the Pirates. The Phillies offense has been shockingly bad lately, but they did manage to break a 23-inning scoreless streak last night and beat the Pirates, 4-2. They cling to a one-game lead in the division over the Mets, and they ’ ll send Jamie Moyer to the mound today. The Pirates starter is some guy I ’ ve never heard of, Jason Davis, who has appeared in 4 games out of the bullpen for Pittsburgh this year.

Director Chris Nolan has said he ’ s not interested, but Watchmen director Zach Snyder says he ’ d like to see Frank Miller ’ s classic graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns adapted for the big screen (check out his comments on io9.com here).
