If she ’ s only on the ticket to try to get disaffected Clinton supporters to cross over, it ’ s a bad choice. Joe Biden may already be practicing his drop-dead line for the vice-presidential debate: “ I know Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton is a friend of mine, and governor, you ’ re no Hillary Clinton. ”

"Sarah Palin, whose husband works for BP (formerly British Petroleum), has repeatedly put special interests first when it comes to the environment. In her scant two years as governor, she has lobbied aggressively to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, pushed for more drilling off of Alaska's coasts, and put special interests above science. Ms. Palin has made it clear through her actions that she is unwilling to do even as much as the Bush administration to address the impacts of global warming. Her most recent effort has been to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove the polar bear from the endangered species list, putting Big Oil before sound science. As unbelievable as this may sound, this actually puts her to the right of the Bush administration.

She ’ s solidly in line with John Mccain ’ s “ Big Oil first ” energy policy. She ’ s pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won ’ t be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species — she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska. (6)

Mccain ’ s choice of Palin as his vice-presidential running-mate makes her the first woman candidate on a national Republican Party ticket and only the second female vice-presidential candidate in U.S. history – the first being Democrat Geraldine Ferraro in 1984, who ran unsuccessfully against the incumbent Reagan-bush Republican ticket.

It was highly entertaining to watch the Pundit Crews on cable news work themselves into a case of the vapors Friday morning, frantically trying to figure out which human sacrifice Mccainiac would condemn as his Veep. Some of the Big Media Brains went agog for Tim Pawlenty; others assured the viewers Mitt Romney would probably emerge as The Choice, even while admitting that the hulking shadow of Tom Ridge continued to lurk in the wings. By later in the AM, Pawlenty and Romney were pushed overboard, leaving Ridge or – could it be? — the ‘ maverick ’ pick of Mccain toady Joe Lieberman, still standing.

Palin comes with no clean slate herself. Although she denies she had any hand in the controversy, she is still under investigation for trying to have her son in law fired from his job as an Alaskan state trooper. It seems that he and the Governor's sister were going through a nasty custody battle, and when he wouldn't go away quietly, the claims are that Palin had a staffer contact Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan, and demand that he fire the trooper without cause. When he refused, Palin fired HIM. But then she stands back and denies any involvement at all. Uh huh.

Let me express my thanks to the historic slate of candidates who accompanied me on this journey, and especially the one who traveled the farthest -- a champion for working Americans and an inspiration to my daughters and to yours -- Hillary Rodham Clinton. To President Clinton, who last night made the case for change as only he can make it; to Ted Kennedy, who embodies the spirit of service; and to the next Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden, I thank you. I am grateful to finish this journey with one of the finest statesmen of our time, a man at ease with everyone from world leaders to the conductors on the Amtrak train he still takes home every night.

So she was very much for the bridge and insisted that Alaska had to act quickly — the party of Ted Stevens and Don Young might soon lose its majority, after all. By that point, the project was endangered for reasons that had nothing to do with Palin — the bridge had become a national laughingstock, Congress had stripped away the offending earmark, shifting the money back to the state's general fund, and future federal support seemed unlikely.

He is smart enough to know it could work, at least politically. Many Republicans see this pick as a brilliant stroke because it will be difficult for Democrats to run hard against a woman in the wake of the Hillary Clinton drama. Will this push those disgruntled Hillary voters Mccain ’ s way? Perhaps. But this is hardly aimed at them: It is directed at the huge bloc of independent women.

Reporters are already winging their way to Alaska to probe what Alaskans call "Wootengate," the story of the dismissal of former Public Safety commissioner Walt Monegan, who says he was pressured to dismiss state trooper Mike Wooten. Wooten was engaged in a nasty custody fight with his ex-wife, who is Palin's sister. As soon as Palin was selected, the Web was already buzzing with Monegan's claims that Palin is lying about her role in the personnel matter. And the beautifully named Steve Branchflower, the special counsel appointed by the state legislature to probe the mess, has opened a tip line for Alaskans who might know if the governor and possible vice president of the United States abused her power.

The Red Sox have placed righty starting pitcher Josh Beckett on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right elbow. Beckett has started 23 games for the Red Sox this season and he is 11-9 with a 4.34 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. The Red Sox have recalled 22-year old righthander Michael Bowden to replace Beckett in the starting rotation. Bowden was the Red Sox ’ # 7 prospect coming into this season according to Baseball America. Bowden has pitched in 26 games (25 starts) in AA + AAA ball this season and he is 9-7 with a 2.68 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. Bowden has only allowed 112 hits and walked 29 batters in 144.1 innings this season which shows what kind of stuff he has. It will be interesting to see how Bowden handles the pressure of a pennant race.

Now, I don't believe that Senator Mccain doesn't care what's going on in the lives of Americans. I just think he doesn't know. Why else would he define middle-class as someone making under five million dollars a year? How else could he propose hundreds of billions in tax breaks for big corporations and oil companies but not one penny of tax relief to more than one hundred million Americans? How else could he offer a health care plan that would actually tax people's benefits, or an education plan that would do nothing to help families pay for college, or a plan that would privatize Social Security and gamble your retirement?

I mean, we 're sort of excited that our humble state has gotten some kind of national'nod'…. but seriously? Sarah Palin for Vice President? Yes, she's a popular governor. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's debut in Dayton on Friday was good political theater. She delivered a pitch-perfect speech (presumably written by Mccain's ghost writer, Mark Salter) with a panache that suggests she could be a natural on the national stage. The well-kept secret of her selection let the GOP step on the story of Obama's boffo acceptance speech in Denver. It's not hard to see why she appealed to Mccain: her middle-class roots; her older son headed for Iraq with the U.S. Army; her opposition to the earmarked "bridge to nowhere," which is arguably the only domestic issue that gets Mccain excited. If camera-ready Palin helps Mccain close the gender gap and win in November, she'll be history's hockey mom.
