Rod Blagojevich last week appointed former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris to the vacant U.S. Senate seat once held by President-elect Barack Hussein Obama Jr. The move caused an outcry in the media, and among Democrats on Capitol Hill, as Blagojevich is facing criminal charges for allegedly trying to sell the seat to the highest bidder.

Hughley gets his own show, which is packed with stereotypical jokes. But, what did they expect when they hired Kathy Griffin to co-host the New Year's Eve broadcast with Anderson Cooper? She's a potty-mouth who doesn't deserve to be on prime time. I think that they got the message this time. She's doomed to the s-list after answering a heckler with a shrieking, vulgar tirade during the network's live New Year's Eve broadcast. "Screw you," she told the heckler. Brett Favre Fallout, Day 5. The Jets were eliminated from the playoffs Sunday, and, apparently, we can attribute it to too much gungslingin'. On Wednesday, Jets running back Thomas Jones suggested Favre should've been benched during his Week 17, three-pick performance, and yesterday, safety Kerry Rhodes had a request of his own: Good luck with that. Everybody knows that Favre spends his offseasons fishing in Mississippi, before hastily announcing he's un-retired in early August, and then going through the motions for a few weeks of training camp. Brad Pitt ’ s stellar performance has been criminally unappreciated by most critics; he is a sensitive and watchful actor possessed of real depth, intelligence, grace and humor. (Like his friend George Clooney, he wears his physical beauty with a self-mocking casual dismissal that invites us mere mortals in on the fun.) Pitt's astonishing star turn is matched by many in the cast. I ’ ll name only four. Cate Blanchett is luminous, fearless and utterly lacking in vanity. Tilda Swinton and Taraji P. Henson are equally memorable and moving as two other pivotal women in Benjamin ’ s life. Rampai Mohadi and Jared Harris soar as two intriguingly drawn surrogate father figures.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is the latest film from David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club, Zodiac). It stars Brad Pitt and is based on an idea from an F. Scott Fitzgerald short story about a man who was born physically old and gets physically younger as he ages. It has a framing device where Benjamin's love Daisy (Cate Blanchett) is dying in a New Orleans hospital as an old woman, while her daughter comforts her by reading Benjamin's dairy.

Never in a million years could I have dreamed this up and hopefully it is just speculation! I guess on two occasions the two were spotted together; one time they were seated together at an event and the other time, they were spotted having an intimate dinner together. The annual Consumer Electronics Show is going to be so boring this year that even Bill Gates is not showing up. He gave his farewell keynote (and his 13th) last year. This year, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will try to rouse the crowd. Looks like ABC News is starting out 2009 with a partisan bang. On its main page, ABC News is hosting a slide show featuring what it is calling the "All Time Dumb Quotes." Now, these are not all strictly political dumb quotes, to be sure. They also have the empty headed Christina Aguilera, that sharp as a tack Jessica Simpson and other denizens of the Hollywood Mensa club among the 16 featured quotes -- and some of them are doozies, too. But, there are six political quotes five by Republicans and one by Tina Fey making fun of a Republican (Palin, naturally), yet there are no "All Time Dumb Quotes" from any Democrats. Not a one. Apparently ABC doesn't think there's ever been a dumb Democrat?

According to Espn.com's Marc Stein, Stephon Marbury could - eventually - be doing his thing in Boston for the Celtics. When amounts to an open question, but should Marbury extricate himself from his contract with the Knicks, there's a good chance we now know his landing place. (For a nice roundup of the implications, check out this post on Truehoop.) The Celtics could use a second ball handling/scoring guard to play behind Rajon Rondo and shore up a thin bench. On paper, by definition they 're a more talented team with Marbury than without. Better? Who knows? Should the move happen, he'll be asked to play a secondary role on a defense first, cultishly team oriented squad, taking what's given to him and requesting no more.

I was saddened yesterday to hear of the death of mystery writer Donald E. Westlake. Under his own name as well as the pseudonym “ Richard Stark, ” Westlake wrote some of my favorite comic caper and tough-guy heist novels, and many of those books had been adapted into motion pictures. The Westlake comedies starred a professional thief named Dortmunder, who was played on screen (sometimes with a name change) by actors as diverse as Robert Redford (The Hot Rock, above left), George C. Scott, and Martin Lawrence. The most famous film version of a Richard Stark novel is probably Point Blank, with Lee Marvin, but Joe Don Baker did a great job as the lead in The Outfit (above right, with Robert Duvall).

Arguably David Fincher ’ s best film yet, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button marries his stylistic tendencies to a story seemingly more suited to a traditional Hollywood epic. The story is almost compelling and personal enough to redeem screenwriter Eric Roth for Forrest Gump (almost), while the excellent performances and unbelievable makeup and special effects deliver the goods and then some. It ’ s also the only big-budget spectacle event film I can think of that is steeped in such a deep melancholy, the same one that seemed to find its way into many of this year ’ s best films.

Kevin Smith ’ s first film – seriously, the first film in his career as a filmmaker – that doesn ’ t take place in New Jersey or constantly refer to characters and situations, etc. from his other films. Maybe that ’ s why it ’ s also arguably his best film to date. Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks are excellent, the supporting cast (especially Craig Robinson and Justin Long) are all hilarious, and it feels like Smith has finally hit exactly the right balance of potty-mouthed humor and sappy romantic comedy.

I did (very much) enjoy the performances of Bill Nighy, Kenneth Branagh and Eddie Izzard. I thought they did stellar jobs with their roles. I ’ ve only seen Bill Nighy in comedic roles (and from the last two Pirates of the Caribbean movies), so it was a very nice surprise to see him in a serious role. And there ’ s not a whole lot more praise you can give Tom Wilkinson. He ’ s fantastic in everything he does.
