Apple's just announced ios 4.1 boasting a number bug fixes and some pretty notable additions. Those fixes include remedies for the proximity sensor issue, Bluetooth, and iphone 3G performance, while the new features include High Dynamic Range photos, HD video uploads over Wifi, TV show rentals, and, at long last, Game Center. That latter bit is pretty much what we've been seeing all along, and boasts a range of new capabilities for multiplayer gaming including the ability to challenge friends, keep track of scores, and new ways to find games -- of which there will be some pretty interesting new ones that take advantage of the added capabilities. Look for the update to hit itunes sometime next week as a free download for your iphone or ipod touch.

Earlier this week, I reported on some comments made by "Avatar" director James Cameron made about "Piranha 3D" and its use of 3-D serving only to "cheapen the medium." In my reporting of the news, I took issue with that sentiment. "Avatar" did something special, sure, but not all film is created equally. For those disinclined to follow media circlejerks, the latest one involves Washington Post columnist Mike Wise, who, for whatever fatuous reason, decided to take to his Twitter account on Monday to try an “ experiment with online media ” where he made up a report saying he heard that Ben Roethlisberger ’ s suspension is being reduced to five games. A few online media outlets, including Profootballtalk, fell for the ruse, which Wise later stupidly bragged about on his radio show. The good news is that if all goes according to plan, the rotation will receive a significant upgrade in mid-september with the return of Andy Pettitte. While not impossible, it also seems unlikely that A.J. Burnett and Javier Vazquez will continue being as bad as they were in August. Additionally, the Yankees will be getting both Alex Rodriguez and Lance Berkman back within the next several days, lengthening and strengthening a lineup that has already been doing quite well without them. If the Yankees get everyone back, healthy and effective, they should be primed for a solid end-of-season stretch run and can hopefully take that momentum with them into the postseason.
